Once again, we are focusing on a hearing aid from the company Widex. This time it is a traditional behind-the-ear hearing aid named Magnify 100 BTE R D. It is a small-sized hearing aid, and it is available at a moderate price. It can be used for moderate, severe, and fluctuating hearing losses. Let's take a look at what the interior has to offer:
Hearing comfort
First, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied everyday life? Here with this test device, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. As with all hearing aids, we also find the typical noise cancellation here. It aims to reduce monotonous, noisy background sounds enough so they do not stand out as much. With the Magnify 100 BTE R D, we are not exactly spoiled, but we can manage with simple noise suppression.
Unfortunately, this hearing aid does not yet have wind noise suppression. What a shame. Even in cheaper hearing aids, we often find damping for impulsive, rattling sounds nowadays. But this clever tool is unfortunately not included here, which is very disappointing. We do not find the low number of frequency channels optimal. The device only has 6 of them, which allows little room for adjustment during initial programming and long-term tuning, and one must likely accept some sound quality losses. We miss a good spatial sound, but the automatic focus can be quite helpful in situations with multiple people.
The signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence is not yet in use here.

Every person has their own unique hearing needs. Therefore, it is advantageous to be able to customize hearing aids beyond the automatic functions. In our tests, we discovered the following options for access: For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume, there is a button on the device. Additional programs for special hearing situations can also be selected through this. The small remote control, which is available as an option, is very practical. For us, it is one of the most convenient ways to make the hearing aid louder or quieter or to switch to another hearing program. No one notices it, and there’s no need to reach for the ear.
We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional function. For instance, we would have liked to see voice control here. However, this feature is currently not available in the Magnify 100 BTE R D. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple tap of the finger in this Widex model, as specific sensors would have been needed in the housing for that.
It is very comfortable to adjust the hearing aids via the app. There is also a free app for the Magnify 100 BTE R D. In our opinion, the range of functions is average but mostly sufficient. It’s best to try it out in demo mode first. The Magnify 100 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna, allowing us to enjoy binaural phone calls. This even gives us an advantage over people with normal hearing. We think that's great and are happy to award points.

Usability is the next aspect we want to address. It concerns everyday practicality and the question of how easy and safe it is to live with the hearing aid. An automatic environmental adjustment would certainly be helpful in daily life, but unfortunately, it is not intended in the Magnify 100 BTE R D. Therefore, we have to limit ourselves to the manual adjustment options. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny increments until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and acclimatize to the new hearing experiences gradually.
The Magnify 100 BTE R D is rechargeable and no longer requires hearing aid batteries. This is environmentally friendly, as there are no old batteries to dispose of. At the same time, it is also extremely convenient, as no replacement batteries need to be carried. The hearing aids simply go into the charging station in the evening and are ready for use the next morning.
With IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse effects. Dust cannot penetrate, it can withstand prolonged immersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

There are quite a few people who are occasionally or frequently plagued by a ringing or buzzing in the ear. The tinnitus program in the Magnify 100 BTE R D is basically just a sound generator. It's about producing broad-spectrum noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all areas of hearing. The tinnitus gets drowned out and is no longer perceived as disturbing.
Widex keeps up with the times and offers a future-oriented feature with the Remote Fitting Service. Busy people with little time can contact their audiologist online and have their hearing aids reprogrammed. Hearing aid users who have a longer commute to the specialist store also benefit from this special service.
A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors, which can be used to track some personal health data, for example. However, the Magnify 100 BTE R D does not offer this. The device from Widex focuses on essential hearing functions and does not provide extras like voice assistants or translation features. While that would have been fun, it is not necessary for a good hearing experience.
