What exactly can the Magnify 60 BTE R D from the manufacturer Widex do? First of all, it is a hearing aid, as known from the past, that sits behind the ear. It covers almost every hearing need. This model is a small hearing aid at a lower price point. What can it deliver in daily hearing situations? What comfort features does it offer? We took a closer look at it.
Hearing comfort
We all agree that speech understanding is the most important task of hearing aids. However, from our experience in the hearing acoustics retail business, we also know that hearing comfort is at least equally important. It’s about processing background noise in such a way that it does not interfere with speech understanding while still creating a natural sound experience. In testing the Magnify 60 BTE R D, we find only the bare essentials regarding hearing comfort. Let’s take a look at the individual features:
Of course, this Widex device includes noise suppression, as that has become standard. Noise suppression means that uniform and rather monotonous sounds (e.g., air conditioning, vacuum cleaners ...) are dampened. Here, it only works to a limited extent. There is nothing more than very basic noise suppression in this device.
A filter for clattering and banging noises is not present here – unfortunately, that’s a point against it. Users of the Magnify 60 BTE R D will have to deal with the wind blowing through the microphones. There is no wind noise reduction here. The Magnify 60 BTE R D has only 6 frequency channels, barely meeting the minimum requirements. In terms of sound quality, one should not have overly high expectations. We miss a good spatial sound, but the automatic focus can be quite helpful in situations with multiple people.
Widex does not yet use artificial intelligence in this version.

How can you fully harness the potential of hearing aids in everyday life? We have found out what access options are available with the Magnify 60 BTE R D. The simplest control option is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This one has it as well. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for incremental volume adjustment. Or do you need different special programs for your professional life or hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. If you prefer to leave everything in automatic mode, you can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. We do like the small remote controls, and we have found one for this model. This allows you to discreetly make small adjustments to the volume or sound.
In the test, we did not find any option for voice control. This function is not strictly necessary, but we would have appreciated it nonetheless. Some hearing aids can be controlled with a simple tap of the finger, without having to press a button. However, this feature has not yet been implemented here.
Manual operation includes an app. This allows for discreet access to the hearing aid. In addition to volume adjustment, you can also set hearing programs and a few other functions. The Magnify 60 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna and offers us the pleasure of binaural calling. This even gives us an advantage over normal hearing individuals. We think this is great and are happy to give it points.

Continuing the test: How is the user-friendliness? Is it easy or complicated to deal with the hearing aid? When it comes to relaxed listening, the Magnify 60 BTE R D is only easy if one is predominantly in quiet hearing environments. If it gets louder or more challenging, we do not receive support from adaptive situation automation. If at all, one can only assist with manual operating options. The adjustment to the new hearing experience is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely balanced. I only need to wear my hearing aids regularly.
The Magnify 60 BTE R D is rechargeable and no longer requires hearing aid batteries. This is environmentally friendly, as there are no used batteries to dispose of. At the same time, it is also extremely convenient, as no spare batteries need to be carried. The hearing aids simply go into the charging station at night and are ready for use the next morning.
The data sheet certifies the Widex device with a certification according to IP protection class 68. This makes it one of the most robust hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water does not penetrate the casing as long as it does not submerge deeper than 1.5 m. However, be cautious. Shampoo, for example, alters the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. However, in everyday life, you can behave completely carefree.

Lastly, we are interested in whether there are any additional goodies: Widex has integrated a sound generator that plays soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.
A clever tool is the integrated remote maintenance service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a scarce resource. Therefore, such a remote maintenance service is absolutely appropriate. Those who need a new programming of their hearing aids can easily contact the audiologist through the app and describe their hearing preferences. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send an individual setting as a data package to the app. From there, it is uploaded to the hearing device and can be tried out immediately. This definitely deserves extra points in our test.
Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Widex model lacks the sensors for this service. Other hearing aids already offer some extended options like a fall alarm or reminder functions. We do not find those here, and that's not too dramatic, as the normal hearing functions are still the most important.
