Our testers have taken a closer look at another hearing aid for those with a tight budget. We present: The Audio Service BSP7 4 HdO. Here we have a hearing aid in the classical sense, worn behind the ear. It can be used by anyone looking to compensate for moderate to severe hearing loss. BSP7 4 HdO is a normally sized hearing aid. Is it worth buying this model? We will reveal the details.
Hearing comfort
First, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of noises does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied daily life? Here with this test device, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. As with all hearing aids, we also find the typical background noise cancellation. It is supposed to reduce monotonous, noisy ambient sounds to the point where they no longer stand out as much. The BSP7 4 BTE only includes a very slight noise reduction.
However, users of the BSP7 4 BTE must cope with the wind sweeping over the microphones. There is no wind noise reduction here. Unfortunately, we did not find a burst filter that reacts to short, loud noises. The 8 frequency channels are okay. However, it may be that the programming for individual hearing needs is not quite as precise, and one might have to make some acoustic compromises. We are quite far from a 3D spatial sound here. Only the switchable forward focus offers some hearing support in social situations.
Strategies based on artificial intelligence are not yet implemented in this hearing aid from Audio Service.

Operation & connectivity
Since you probably do not have your audiologist by your side all the time, it is quite helpful to be able to make adjustments to the hearing aid yourself. There are various control options available, and we will look at which ones the BSP7 4 HdO has. Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the BSP7 4 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be disabled if desired. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is with a remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you are talking to is speaking too quietly again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.
We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. But that is currently not available in the BSP7 4 HdO. Tap Control would have also been an interesting function. With that, you can change the function with a quick tap on the ear. However, this is not available in the BSP7 4 HdO yet.
A suitable app will also be made available to us. In everyday life, the app should be sufficient, but it does not offer much more than a volume function and accessing various hearing programs. One of the best features of the hearing aid is the direct streaming function. This turns the hearing aid into a TrueWireless headphone, receiving phone calls and other sounds directly in the ear. The prerequisite is a compatible smartphone that includes 2.4 GHz technology. The biggest advantage is that you can hear phone calls not just in one ear, but in both. Additionally, the sound can be tailored to personal needs.

Our analysis also addresses the practicality of hearing aids in everyday life. This involves robustness, but also special comfort features that aim to keep daily use as simple as possible. When it comes to simplicity, it initially refers to easy, effortless hearing. This is quite effective with the existing situational automation in the BSP7 4 HdO. However, when the acoustic environment becomes a bit more varied, the automation reaches its limits, and we prefer to resort to manual adjustment options. We give a big plus point for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It gradually increases the starting volume in very small steps until my hearing goal is reached. This significantly eases the adjustment to the new sound.
Many hearing aids today have a rechargeable battery, but the BSP7 4 HdO still operates with disposable batteries. This is somewhat cumbersome to handle and also places a burden on the environment.
We also take a look at the robustness of the housing and discover in the data sheet the protection class IP 68. This prevents dust from penetrating, and water becomes a threat only after prolonged submersion. Protection against contact is also part of it.

Extras
Sometimes it's the little things that make a hearing aid perfect. That's why we quickly check for the extras that might be included: A tinnitus program would be an additional bonus. Many people suffering from their ear noises could benefit from this. Unfortunately, the BSP7 4 HdO does not have a tinnitus option and loses a few points in the test.
A clever tool is the integrated remote maintenance service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a precious resource. Therefore, such a remote maintenance service is absolutely appropriate. Anyone who needs a new programming of their hearing aids can easily contact the audiologist via the app and describe their hearing preferences. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send a customized setting as a data package to the app. From there, it is loaded onto the hearing aid and can be tested immediately. This definitely deserves extra points in our test.
Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this audio service model lacks the sensors for this service. It would have been nice to have a few lifestyle features, but these are not available in the BSP7 4 HdO. Other hearing aids can score points with language translators or fall alarms, but here it remains with the usual range of functions.
