Here, we get a small, barely noticeable hearing aid at a reasonable price from the upper mid-range, designed to be worn in the ear. The precise placement directly in the ear canal sets the foundation for good hearing success, as the sound has only a very short distance to travel to the eardrum. As a result, all sounds reach where we want them to.
The Alpha 5 CIC provides enough amplification for mild, moderate, and even strong hearing needs.
Hearing comfort
A good speech understanding is a given in modern hearing aids. Equally important is the hearing comfort. Only when the ratio of speech transmission to the level of background noise is right, is hearing perceived as pleasant. Therefore, we take a look at the comfort features: The Alpha 5 CIC provides the customer with comprehensive noise management. Normal environmental noises like street noise, the vacuum cleaner sound, or the sound of a fan are to be dampened by classic noise suppression. In this Bernafon hearing aid, the noise suppression works rather average but is somewhat adjustable.
Impulse noises are identified and reliably mitigated. This is noticeable, for example, with typical kitchen noises, or also with paper rustling or keyboard typing. A wind manager is not necessary in this model. It is hidden in the ear canal and is naturally protected from the wind by the outer ear. Spatial hearing with the Alpha 5 CIC occurs in a very natural way. Due to the special placement deep in the ear canal, the function of the outer ear is preserved, and there are no compromises in directional hearing. The Alpha 5 CIC is one of the good hearing aids, at least in terms of the number of frequency bands. With 18 bands, it is well-equipped for precise adaptation to personal sound preferences.
Artificial intelligence is also used in the signal processing of the Alpha 5 CIC. This allows for a much more realistic analysis of the hearing environment, and especially the clarity in noisy surroundings is significantly better.

Operation & connectivity
Most hearing aids automatically adjust to their environment. However, it is sometimes very practical to be able to make adjustments yourself. After all, the hearing aid does not know how you are feeling at the moment. We have looked at the control options offered by the Alpha 5 CIC: First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very sensible, as it is the simplest and fastest way to make changes. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If you prefer not to make any adjustments directly at the ear, you can of course deactivate the button. Unfortunately, this hearing aid cannot be adjusted via remote control – that’s a few points lost.
We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For instance, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. But this is currently not available in the Alpha 5 CIC. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and the device switches modes. However, we do not have that here at Bernafon, as it would have required specific sensors.
If you are looking for an app, unfortunately, you won’t find one here. The Alpha 5 CIC must do without smart control functions. That point is lost. Wireless connectivity options are completely missing in this variant. This is no longer quite up to date, but is probably due to the small size of the hearing aid.

How do you manage with the hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we will evaluate. Because only when such a device functions simply and uncomplicatedly can you really get used to it. Typical hearing situations that everyone experiences in their environment are reliably recognized and adjusted through automatic settings. However, for more specific, recurring requirements, using the manual hearing programs cannot be avoided. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing device in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and slowly get used to the new hearing impressions.
The Alpha 5 CIC gets its energy from small disposable batteries that need to be changed every few days. While this is not rocket science, it should be considered at least for those with motoric issues. A rechargeable battery would be much simpler to handle.
The data sheet certifies the Bernafon device with an IP protection class rating of 68. This makes it one of the most durable hearing aids on the market. Dust stands no chance, and water cannot penetrate the housing as long as it does not submerge deeper than 1.5 meters. However, be cautious. Shampoo, for example, alters the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. In everyday life, though, you can behave completely carefree.

Wer mag, kann sich ein spezielles Tinnitus-Programm einrichten lassen. Das legt bei Bedarf ein sanftes Rauschen auf die Ohren, um vom nervigen Tinnitus ein wenig abzulenken. Die Geräusche können nach dem persönlichen Hörgeschmack gestaltet werden.
In mobilen Zeiten wie diesen wäre ein Fernwartungsdienst über eine App sehr hilfreich. Darüber könnte man sich bequem von zuhause aus eine neue Hörgeräteprogrammierung erstellen lassen. Leider gibt es diesen Service nicht für das Alpha 5 CIC. Bei Änderungswünschen muss man also weiterhin das Fachgeschäft aufsuchen.
Das Tracken von Gesundheitsdaten ist ein echter Mehrwert in modernen Hörgeräten. Für diesen Dienst fehlen diesem Bernafon-Modell allerdings die Sensoren. Bei anderen Hörgeräten gibt es schon ein paar erweiterte Optionen wie einen Sturzalarm oder Erinnerungsfunktionen. Hier finden wir das nicht, und das ist auch gar nicht so dramatisch, denn die normalen Hörfunktionen sind immer noch am wichtigsten.
