The Oticon Own SI 1 CIC in review

What hearing comfort does the Own SI 1 CIC offer? How is it operated? Is it worth purchasing? Answers to these questions can be found in our review of this hearing aid from Oticon. First, the basics: It is worn in the ear, and due to its discreet placement in the ear canal, sound can easily travel towards the eardrum. This is important, as only in this way can a truly good, wide-band sound be produced.

The Own SI 1 CIC is a small, barely noticeable hearing aid of excellent quality that can cover both mild and more severe hearing needs. Read more details:

Hearing comfort

Hearing aids should not only bring speech to the ear but also sound pleasant. So, let's first look at the comfort features. Which types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? Are they dampened or transmitted unchanged? Is the hearing aid suitable for a lively everyday life? Here with this test device, we were impressed by the excellent noise management. Like in every hearing aid, it also has typical noise suppression built in. It is designed to reduce uniform, noisy background sounds to the point that they no longer dominate. The Own SI 1 CIC has a very effective noise suppression implemented. It can be adjusted by the audiologist to fit individual sensitivities and provides exactly the level of attenuation that the customer desires. This way, you are well-equipped for demanding hearing environments.

This model can forego wind noise management. The hearing aid fits so far into the ear canal that wind noises do not become a problem at all. Popping, metallic sounds have no chance in this hearing aid; they are significantly weakened with a multi-stage tool. With 24 channels, the frequency band count in the Own SI 1 CIC is very high. This allows the hearing aid to be perfectly tailored to each individual's hearing and also offers good long-term tuning options. Adaptive microphone systems facilitate spatial hearing. However, you need to get used to the new sound a bit; especially at the beginning, it may not always be clear where a sound is coming from.

Understanding speech in noisy environments is always a challenge. Oticon addresses this issue with the use of artificial intelligence. The result is brilliant and clear speech transmission while the background noises still come to the ear at a realistically loud level.

Operation & connectivity

Every person has their own unique hearing needs. It is advantageous if one can customize their hearing aids beyond the automatic functions. In our test, we discovered the following access options: The simplest control option is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This one has it as well. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for stepwise adjustment of the volume. Or do you need different special programs for your professional everyday life or your hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. Anyone who wants to keep everything in automatic mode can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. Unfortunately, this hearing aid cannot be adjusted via a remote control – a few points are lost there.

In our test, we found no option for voice control. This function is not necessarily required, but we would have appreciated it nonetheless. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is touch control. You simply tap your fingers on your ear, which triggers a specific function. However, this feature is not available in this Oticon device.

Although smartphone apps are offered for many hearing aids today, Oticon unfortunately does not provide one for its Own SI 1 CIC. Wireless connectivity options are completely lacking in this version. This is no longer very up-to-date, but it likely has to do with the small size of the hearing aid.

The best alternatives to the Own SI 1 CIC

Simplicity & security

Our analysis also addresses the practicality of hearing aids in everyday life. This includes robustness, but also special comfort features that are intended to make daily use as easy as possible. The Own SI 1 CIC performs exceptionally well in situation recognition. Those looking for a comprehensive and powerful full automation in their hearing aid and who want to adjust it as little as possible will be well served here. The adaptive algorithms untangle the individual sound events in the environment and present the soundscape clearly and precisely. The integrated acclimatization manager can be of great help when entering the world of hearing aids. Its task is to gradually increase the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until the target volume is reached. This way, you can relax and gradually acclimatize to the new hearing impressions. More information on acclimatization and other hearing aids with this feature is summarized here: Acclimatization to Hearing Aids.

The Own SI 1 CIC gets its energy from small disposable batteries that need to be changed every few days. While this is not rocket science, it should be taken into account, especially in case of motor issues. A rechargeable battery would be significantly easier to handle.

We had a carefree everyday experience in our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then removed the hearing aids with wet hands - everything was fine. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to soapy bathwater or seawater.

Rating Simplicity & security: 1,8

Extras

We have addressed the main factors in our test report. Before we finish, we look out for a few extras: We were particularly impressed by the optional tinnitus program. There are quite a few people who are occasionally or frequently plagued by a ringing or buzzing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the Own SI 1 CIC is essentially just a sound generator. The aim is to produce broadband noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all areas of hearing. The tinnitus gets masked and is no longer perceived as disturbing.

A nice feature would be a remote maintenance service, allowing you to receive help from the hearing professional even when you can't come into the store. Unfortunately, this is not available here, so there are no extra points for that.

A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors that can, for example, track some personal health data. However, the Own SI 1 CIC does not offer this. The functionality of the Own SI 1 CIC is limited to normal hearing, which is perfectly fine. Additional features like fall alerts or Siri connections provide added value, but they are not relevant for a good hearing balance.
