In the Alpha 5 ITC, we don’t necessarily deal with a high-performance variant, but in most hearing situations, the noise suppression should be sufficient. Wind noise can sometimes become an issue outdoors. That's why a moderate wind noise management system is integrated here.
The impulse filter in this hearing aid is quite solid and suitable for everyday use. Spatial hearing requires a bit of practice with the Alpha 5 ITC. However, the adaptive microphone system provides good support in social situations. The Alpha 5 ITC is one of the good hearing aids, at least in terms of the number of frequency bands. With 18 bands, it is well-equipped for precise adjustment to personal sound preferences.
Interestingly, artificial intelligence also plays a role in signal processing here. The sound is therefore analyzed not only based on typical frequency patterns. Particularly intense, noisy situations are perceived as more realistic and pleasant because of this.

Operation & connectivity
The operation of hearing aids today is as simple or as complex as one wishes. The basic functions operate fully automatically. We wanted to know how users can access the Alpha 5 ITC beyond that. First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very practical, as it is the easiest and fastest way to make changes. The volume can be adjusted via this button, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If someone prefers not to adjust anything directly on the ear, the button can of course be disabled. A remote control for the hearing aid is available upon request. This allows for effortless volume adjustment. The handling is not only child's play; no one will notice that you are adjusting your hearing aids.
We always appreciate when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see a voice control option at this point. However, this is currently not available in the Alpha 5 ITC. Some hearing aids can also be operated with a quick tap of the finger, without the need to press a button. This feature has not yet been implemented here.
An app on the smartphone is supposed to make operation easier, and we have found one for the Alpha 5 ITC as well. In addition to the basic functions like volume and programs, we find a few more buttons for personalization. We really enjoyed the direct, wireless streaming. This means that calls from the smartphone can be transmitted to the hearing aids without any additional accessories. This turns the hearing aid into a perfect hands-free system or wireless headphones. Listening to music or watching and hearing videos is incredibly comfortable.

Now let's take a look at how the usage in everyday life is designed. Is the handling easy? Do I get a safe device? When it comes to simplicity, it's primarily about easy, effortless hearing. This works quite well with the existing situation automation in the Alpha 5 ITC. However, when the acoustic environment is a bit more varied, the automation reaches its limits, and we prefer to rely on manual adjustment options. A great bonus in this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when someone has been hearing poorly for a long time and then wears a hearing aid for the first time, this is a tremendous relief. The volume does not have to be raised to maximum immediately. One can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost imperceptibly, the amplification approaches the target.
Alpha 5 ITC relies on battery power instead of rechargeable batteries. Advantage: Very long runtime with one battery. Unlike rechargeable solutions, you rarely have to worry about the power supply. Disadvantage: Waste is generated in the form of used batteries. This hearing aid uses a hearing aid battery of size 312.
We also take a look at the robustness of the casing and find the protection class IP 68 in the data sheet. This means that dust cannot even penetrate, and water only becomes hazardous after prolonged submersion. Protection against contact is also included.

Lastly, we are interested in whether there are a few goodies on top: Bernafon has integrated a noise generator that plays soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.
We find the remote maintenance service exciting, which can be utilized. If one doesn’t have the opportunity to visit the hearing specialist, they can instead contact them via the app, briefly describe their hearing problem, and then receive a data package with a new hearing aid configuration. If it sounds good, they can upload it to their hearing aids.
There are no sensors in this Alpha 5 variant, so the popular health tracking feature cannot be offered. For example, this option counts the steps taken throughout the day. As mentioned - this hearing aid does not have this function on board. In connection with a smartphone, the Alpha 5 ITC surprises us with a few nice lifestyle features. It is definitely worth getting thoroughly acquainted with the app and utilizing the offered assistance programs.
