The Oticon Own 1 ITC in review

We tested a small hearing aid from the premium category this time. It is the Oticon Own 1 ITC. It is worn in the ear and is designed for mild, moderate, and severe hearing needs. The device owes its direct placement in the ear canal to its design, which is why it provides a beautiful, clear sound.

Oticon has now integrated the proven Oticon More technology into attractive in-the-ear devices, thereby completing the More product portfolio.

Hearing comfort

At least as important as speech understanding is listening comfort. After all, we want our environment to sound as realistic and pleasant as possible. So let's take a look at the noise management: In this model, which Oticon offers here, the manufacturer provides the customer with comprehensive noise management. Naturally, noise suppression is integrated to reduce exhausting background noises. The Own 1 ITC features a highly effective and adjustable noise reduction. This keeps listening very comfortable even in demanding environments. For windy situations outdoors, Oticon has included wind noise reduction. This is quite useful and is simply part of contemporary comfort features.

The suppression of short, loud sound events convinced us; it is quite powerful. Spatial hearing in this model is almost lifelike. A sophisticated directional microphone technology allows for good directional hearing and creates a real 3D effect. For a precise, lifelike listening experience, the number of adjustable frequency bands is of great importance. With 24, this Oticon device is a true top model and allows for a differentiated fine-tuning over several years.

Artificial intelligence has also made its way into hearing aids, for example here in the Own 1 ITC. This provides a lot more data to identify speech and noise. In our experience, the sound of hearing aids with AI is perceived as particularly precise and realistic.

With a dynamic range of 113 dB, Oticon offers distortion-free sound even at high inputs with its MoreSound technology. If it gets lively and loud, you will appreciate this effect.

Operation & connectivity

Almost every one of us owns a smartphone, so it's natural to wonder if it can be connected to the new hearing aid. Let's take a look at the connectivity and usability of the Own 1 ITC. A very quick way to adjust the volume is through the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can adjust the volume in several steps. Additional programs for specific hearing situations can also be activated with it. If you prefer to do without the button, you can simply have it disabled. We also like the small remote controls, and we have found one for this model. This allows for discreet adjustments to the volume or sound.

In our testing, we did not find a voice control option. While this feature is not necessarily required, we would have appreciated it. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids include tap control. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and the device switches modes. However, we don’t have that here at Oticon, as it would have required specific sensors.

It is very convenient to adjust the hearing aids via the app. There is also a free app for the Own 1 ITC. In our opinion, the range of features is average but usually sufficient. It’s best to try it out in demo mode beforehand. Problems when making calls with the smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are transmitted completely wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become redundant. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls and while listening to music while exercising. Everything worked simply and smoothly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is needed.

The hands-free function with the hearing aids works only with the iOS operating system, as only this enables two-way transmission. This allows the microphones of the hearing aid to pick up your voice and transmit it to your conversation partner via the smartphone. Android smartphones currently only use one-way signal transmission, so while you can hear the call through the hearing aids, you still have to use the phone's microphone to speak.

Simplicity & security

How does one manage with a hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we will evaluate. Because only if such a device works simply and uncomplicated can one become accustomed to it. Ideally, the hearing aid should operate as independently as possible. The performance of the Own 1 ITC is particularly good in this regard. It has a large number of typical hearing situations stored, which the device recognizes independently and always generates the appropriate setting. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when someone has been hearing poorly for a long time and then wears a hearing aid for the first time, this is an enormous relief. The volume does not have to be immediately turned up all the way. One can initially start at a lower level, and gradually and almost unnoticed, the amplification approaches the target.

The Own 1 ITC is not rechargeable. It continues to get its power from disposable batteries size 312, which need to be changed every few days.

We had a carefree everyday life in our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and afterwards took out the hearing aids with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to soapy bathwater or seawater.

Extras

Finally, let's briefly look at whether there are any extras: We were really impressed with the optional tinnitus program. There are quite a few people who are occasionally or frequently troubled by a ringing or buzzing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the Own 1 ITC is actually nothing more than a sound generator. It is about generating broadband noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all hearing areas. The tinnitus is drowned out and is no longer perceived as disturbing.

We find the remote maintenance service quite exciting, which can be utilized. If one does not have the opportunity to visit the audiologist, one can contact them via the app, briefly describe their hearing problem, and then receive a data package with a new hearing aid configuration. If that sounds good, one loads it into their hearing aids.

A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors that can track some personal health data, for example. However, the Own 1 ITC does not have that on offer. Digital algorithms and suitable apps are increasingly allowing the integration of lifestyle functions that support your everyday life. We are impressed by what hearing aids like this one from Oticon can do today. Be sure to try it out!
