The Alpha 5 ITE HS from Bernafon is a small hearing aid that is worn in the ear. By using it in the optimal position at the front of the ear canal, very good sound transmission is possible. Alpha 5 ITE HS is a hearing aid at a reasonable price from the upper mid-range and is suitable for almost any hearing need.
Hearing comfort
The hearing comfort determines whether someone likes to wear their hearing aids or not. That's why we first looked at how the hearing aid handles background noise. In this model presented by Bernafon, solid comfort programming by the hearing acoustician is possible. Of course, noise suppression is integrated to soften bothersome background sounds. The Alpha 5 ITE HS handles this quite well. In a normal hearing environment, it is certainly manageable. This device can recognize wind and slightly reduce the noise.
Impulse sounds are identified and reliably cushioned. This is noticeable, for example, with typical kitchen noises, as well as with paper rustling or keyboard clicking. One needs to train spatial hearing a little with these hearing aids. Although the movable microphones help, the placement of these microphones on top of the ear cup means that the spatial sound is not as it is for a normally hearing person. However, after a short adjustment period, spatial hearing works quite well. A high number of frequency bands supports the separation of speech and noise. The Alpha 5 ITE HS, with its 18 bands, certainly ranks in the forefront.
It is interesting that artificial intelligence also plays a role in signal processing here. The sound is not only analyzed based on typical frequency patterns. Especially intense, noisy situations are perceived as more realistic and pleasant.

Operation & connectivity
Almost everyone of us owns a smartphone, which raises the question of whether it can be connected to the new hearing aid as well. Let’s take a look at the connectivity and usability of the Alpha 5 ITE HS. Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Alpha 5. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be disabled if desired. A remote control for the hearing aid is available upon request. This allows for effortless volume adjustment. The handling is not only very easy, but no one will notice that you are currently adjusting your hearing aids.
In our tests, we did not find any option for voice control. This function is not necessarily required, but we would have appreciated it nonetheless. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, a tap control could be possible, which would activate a specific function by tapping the ear with your fingers. However, this option is not available in the Alpha 5 ITE HS.
The app is definitely very useful. Anyone who has a smartphone should download it. Even though the app is not one of our favorites, it is a helpful addition to the Alpha 5 ITE HS. For our digital everyday life, a streaming option would not be bad. This device meets our wish and includes a 2.4 GHz radio module. With this, you can send phone calls and sounds directly from the smartphone to the hearing aids.

Now let's take a look at how usage is shaped in everyday life. Is the handling simple? Do I receive a safe device? When it comes to simplicity, we first talk about easy, effortless hearing. This works quite well with the existing situational automation in the Alpha 5 ITE HS. However, when the acoustic environment becomes a bit more varied, the automation reaches its limits, and we prefer to rely on manual adjustment options. Support during the acclimatization process is crucial for us in terms of simplicity. Especially after years of poor hearing, it can sometimes be difficult to perceive everything at a natural volume. Our test device has an acclimatization manager that helps us through the adjustment phase with very small volume adjustments. After a few weeks or months, we then reach the calculated amplification level.
Alpha 5 ITE HS relies on battery power instead of rechargeable batteries. Advantage: Very long runtime with one battery. Unlike battery solutions, you rarely have to worry about the power supply. Disadvantage: Waste is generated in the form of used batteries. This hearing aid uses a hearing aid battery size 312.
We had a carefree everyday life in our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then removed the hearing aids with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only pertains to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bathwater or saltwater.

Leise, sanfte Klänge werden auf Ihr Gehör abgestimmt und beschäftigten alle Bereiche im Innenohr. Das ist nichts weiter als ein Ablenkungsmanöver, und es funktioniert erstaunlich gut. Der Tinnitus verschwindet in dem allgemeinen Geräusch und nervt nicht weiter. Das ist ein einfaches, aber wirksames Tool und bekommt von uns Extrapunkte.
Einen echten Mehrwert bietet der Fernwartungsdienst. Für eine Veränderung der Hörgeräteeinstellung muss man nicht mehr zwingend ins Fachgeschäft gehen, sondern kann direkt über die App Kontakt zum Akustiker aufnehmen. Über einen Cloud-Dienst kann man dann das neue Datenpaket in die Hörgeräte laden. Genau so etwas erwarten wir von einem zeitgemäßen Hörgerät.
Manche Hörgeräte können bestimmte Gesundheitsdaten tracken. Allerdings braucht es dazu spezielle Sensoren im Hörgerät, die wir beim Alpha 5 ITE HS leider nicht haben. Mit Geräten wie diesem aus dem Hause Bernafon werden unsere Testberichte immer länger, denn nun gibt es auch noch intelligente Zusatzfunktionen. Verschiedene Assistenten erleichtern Ihnen das Leben und werden in der App personalisiert. Zwingend nötig ist das nicht, macht aber riesig Spaß. Dafür gibt es eine gute Bewertung von uns.
