We are once again looking at a hearing aid in the classic sense for moderate to severe hearing loss: This model is called Entra B 20 MNB T R and comes from the company Bernafon. It is worn behind the ear and is a discreet hearing aid. The Entra B 20 MNB T R is a model at a rather affordable price. Let's see if the pricing is justified.

Hearing comfort

One of our favorite chapters is hearing comfort, because it addresses one of the most important topics in conversations with our customers: background noise. Everyone would prefer to hear only speech and suppress all other sounds. However, it's not that simple. Without noise, our lives would sound very thin and empty. That’s why hearing aids are designed to keep sounds under control, but not eliminate them entirely.

With the Entra B 20 MNB T R, we found very few options for comfort adjustment. The mandatory noise suppression is supposed to activate for anything that has a somewhat constant hum, like heating systems or range hoods. In this device, we have a quite decent noise suppression. It might be too weak if you often find yourself in traffic, but in regular daily life, it manages just fine.

Those who enjoy spending time outdoors will appreciate the wind noise suppression here. It may not dampen as strongly, but it is definitely useful. After all, the Entra B 20 MNB T R contains what is known as a pop filter. But is that always sufficient? There is no support for spatial hearing, which is where the Entra B 20 MNB T R does not impress. We always take a close look at the number of equalizer bands. They are important for adjusting the sound of a hearing aid to the hearing curve as closely as possible. Additionally, speech noise management also takes place within these bands. The Entra B 20 MNB T R has 14 of them. That’s okay.

We checked. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. With it, you can change the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. Of course, using it is optional. We do like the small remote controls, and for this model, we found one. This allows for discreet adjustments to the volume or sound.

For some time now, there has been a trend to adjust hearing aids louder or quieter using voice commands. The idea is really good, but Bernafon is not quite there yet with this device. Don't worry, this feature would be nice, but it can be skipped. Tap Control would have also been an interesting function. With this, you could change the function with a quick tap on the ear. But this is not available in the Entra B 20 MNB T R yet.

As is common today, we also find a smartphone app for the Entra B 20 MNB T R. This app includes solid basic functions and adds a few extras on top. A streaming option would not be bad for our digital everyday life. The device in question fulfills our wish and comes with a 2.4 GHz wireless module. This allows you to send phone calls and sounds directly from the smartphone to the hearing aids.

In the next step, we want to address the topic of user-friendliness. Is the Entra B 20 MNB T R easy to handle? Is it weatherproof? Do you have to do a lot to get along with it? Here are our answers: Unfortunately, the Entra B 20 MNB T R cannot provide automatic situation recognition; we have to make manual adjustments to hear well in different acoustic situations. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when someone has been hearing poorly for a long time and then wears a hearing aid for the first time, it is a huge relief. The volume does not have to be turned up immediately to the maximum. You can start at a lower level and gradually and almost imperceptibly approach the desired amplification.

The Entra B 20 MNB T R has a rechargeable battery. We find this very good because rechargeable hearing aids are absolutely up-to-date. You don’t have to have batteries lying around everywhere nor change the battery in the middle of a concert. The hearing aid simply plugs into the charging station overnight and has enough energy for the following day.

With an IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand a variety of adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it can withstand longer submersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

We have addressed the most important factors in our test report. Before we conclude, we look out for a few extras: Are you among those suffering from tinnitus? Then you could use the optional tinnitus program in the Entra B 20 MNB T R. Soft, gentle sounds are tuned to your hearing and engage all areas of the inner ear. This is nothing more than a distraction maneuver, and it works surprisingly well. The tinnitus disappears into the general noise and is no longer annoying. This is a simple but effective tool and earns extra points from us.

We find the remote maintenance service available to be exciting. If you don’t have the opportunity to go to the hearing care professional, you can instead contact them via the app, briefly describe your hearing problem, and then receive a data package with a new hearing aid configuration. If it sounds good, you can upload it to your hearing aids.

Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Bernafon model lacks the necessary sensors for this service. Nevertheless, this Bernafon device has a few small highlights. Depending on what your smartphone supports, you can set reminders for appointments, access Siri, or use other assistance systems. This definitely earns another extra point.
