Here we take a look at a hearing aid from the upper mid-range that is worn behind the ear. It is called Viron 3 MNR T R and comes from the manufacturer Bernafon. It can be used by all people who have mild, moderate, and even severe hearing losses and desire an inconspicuous hearing aid. Due to the cleverly chosen placement of the speaker in the ear canal, it has very good sound characteristics.
Hearing comfort
First, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied daily life? Here with this test device, we find only the bare essentials when it comes to hearing comfort. As with all hearing aids, we also find the typical background noise suppression here. It is supposed to reduce monotonous, noisy ambient sounds to the point where they no longer dominate. The Viron 3 MNR T R has rather below-average noise suppression. Noise-sensitive individuals will have to make some compromises regarding hearing comfort.
In the Viron 3 MNR T R, we do have wind reduction, but it doesn't really help outdoors. According to the manufacturer, an impulse sound suppression is integrated, but we could hardly feel it. With 10 frequency bands, we are not entirely satisfied with the MNR T R, but it should suffice for uncomplicated hearing profiles. The sound is likely not going to be very natural with this configuration. The microphones in the Viron 3 MNR T R can be directed forward in the line of sight. However, that is the only feature that slightly supports spatial hearing.
In this version, Bernafon does not yet work with artificial intelligence.

How can one fully utilize the potential of hearing aids in everyday life? We found out what access options are available with the Viron 3 MNR T R. For those who want to adjust the volume quickly and easily, there is a button on the device. Additional programs for special listening situations can also be selected through it. Those who prefer not to touch their ear to adjust the volume will appreciate the optional remote control. This allows for convenient and discreet changes to the hearing aid.
We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. However, it is not available in the Viron 3 MNR T R at the moment. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, tap control might be possible, which would be triggering a specific function by tapping one’s fingers on the ear. However, this option is not available in the Viron 3 MNR T R.
The manual operation includes an app. This allows for discreet access to the hearing aid. In addition to adjusting the volume, users can also set hearing programs and a few other functions. Problems with phone calls on a smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are completely wirelessly transmitted to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls as well as for listening to music while exercising. Everything worked simply and smoothly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is required.

User-friendliness is the next aspect we want to address. This is about everyday usability and the question of how easy and safe it is to navigate life with the hearing aid. We expected a bit more support in everyday hearing with the automatic situation detection. The situations “Quiet” and “Noise” are recognized, but usually, the sound environment is somewhat more complex. A great bonus in this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially if someone has been hearing poorly for a long time and then starts wearing a hearing aid for the first time, this is an enormous relief. The volume does not have to be turned up immediately. One can start at a lower level and gradually, almost unnoticed, the amplification approaches the target.
The Viron 3 MNR T R has a rechargeable battery. We think this is great because rechargeable hearing aids are absolutely modern. You don't have to have batteries lying around everywhere, nor do you need to change the battery in the middle of a concert. The hearing aid is simply placed in the charging station overnight and has enough energy for the following day.
We also take a look at the robustness of the housing and discover in the data sheet the protection class IP 68. This means that dust cannot penetrate at all, and water only becomes dangerous after prolonged immersion. Protection against contact is also included.

Lastly, we are interested in whether there are any additional goodies: A special tinnitus program can be programmed into the Viron 3 MNR T R upon request. This can generate stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and gladly award extra points.
We find the remote maintenance service quite exciting, which can be utilized. If you don't have the opportunity to visit the hearing specialist, you can instead contact them via the app, briefly describe your hearing problem, and then receive a data package with a new hearing aid configuration. If it sounds good, you can upload it to your hearing aids.
Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires special sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately do not have in the Viron 3 MNR T R. Then there are a few lifestyle features that turn your hearing aid into a smart assistant. Connect with voice assistants like Siri, or discover what else is available in the app. While this may not have much to do with actual hearing, it can be extremely useful.
