Hearing comfort
In the section on hearing comfort, we look at how a hearing aid manages all the background noises. Comfortable noise management significantly contributes to a user liking and regularly wearing their hearing aids. With this Bernafon device, we found very few options for comfort influence. The regular noise suppression is designed to mitigate consistent, ambient background noises. In the Viron 5 MNR, we are not exactly pampered, but we can live well with basic noise suppression.
Our test discovered an impulse sound damping feature. It slightly dampens sharp, rapidly occurring noises. The device from Bernafon can also recognize wind noise, but this results in only very minimal noise reduction. For typical everyday situations, this is sufficient, but true outdoor enthusiasts will not be satisfied with this. We cannot achieve a proper 3D spatial sound with the current test device. Especially outdoors, one should often look around to identify the location of individual sound sources. However, focusing on a specific speaker works quite well with the integrated directional microphones. The Viron 5 MNR has 12 adjustable frequency bands and is therefore in the mid-range. A good acoustician can certainly extract a reasonable sound from it.
Other hearing aids already use artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but this strategy is not yet present in the Viron 5 MNR.

Operation & connectivity
“Can I adjust something on my hearing aid myself?” “Is there perhaps an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when selecting a hearing aid, so let's take a look at the control and connectivity options. First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very useful because it is the easiest and quickest way to make adjustments. The volume can be adjusted using it, and different listening programs can also be activated. If one prefers not to make any adjustments directly at the ear, the button can of course be deactivated. We do like small remote controls, and we found one for this model. This allows for discreet small changes in volume or sound.
There has been a trend for some time now to adjust hearing aids to be louder or quieter using voice commands. The idea is really good, but Bernafon is not quite there with this device yet. Don’t worry, this feature would be nice, but it is not essential. Tap Control would have also been an interesting function. With this, you could change the function with a quick tap on the ear. But this is not available in the Viron 5 MNR yet.
Manual control includes an app. This allows for discreet access to the hearing aid. In addition to volume control, you can also adjust hearing programs and a few other functions. The Viron 5 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna and allows us the pleasure of binaural phone calls. This even gives us an advantage over normally hearing individuals. We appreciate that and are happy to give it points.

Another point on our checklist is the handling. Does everything work simply and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? We classify the integrated situation recognition in the Viron 5 MNR rather in the middle range. The most important loud and quiet situations are recognized and adapted. However, this is not entirely sufficient for acoustically more complex moments, as one cannot avoid further manual adjustment options. Very important in terms of simplicity is the support during the acclimatization process. Especially after years of hearing poorly, it can be difficult to perceive everything at a natural volume. In our test device, there is an acclimatization manager that helps us with very small volume adjustments throughout the adjustment phase. After a few weeks or months, we reach the calculated amplification level.
Many hearing aids today have a rechargeable battery, but the Viron 5 MNR still operates with disposable batteries. This is somewhat cumbersome to handle and also burdens the environment.
With an IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it can withstand prolonged submersion in water, and it is also protected against touches.

Über ein paar Extra-Funktionen freut sich jeder, also schauen wir mal, ob wir hier fündig werden: Richtig gut gefallen hat uns das optionale Tinnitusprogramm. Es gibt doch relativ viele Menschen, die gelegentlich oder häufig von einem Pfeifen oder Rauschen im Ohr geplagt sind. Das Tinnitusprogramm im Viron 5 MNR ist eigentlich nichts weiter als ein Klanggenerator. Es geht darum, breitbandige Geräusche oder Klänge zu erzeugen, die sanft und angenehm alle Hörbereiche stimulieren. Der Tinnitus geht darin unter und wird nicht mehr als störend wahrgenommen.
Ein cleveres Tool ist der integrierte Fernwartungsservice. Fast jeder hat ein Smartphone, und Zeit ist ein knappes Gut. Deshalb ist so ein Fernwartungsservice absolut angemessen. Wer eine neue Programmierung seiner Hörgeräte benötigt, kann ganz einfach über die App Kontakt zum Akustiker aufnehmen und seine Hörwünsche beschreiben. Über einen Cloud-Service kann der Profi dann eine individuelle Einstellung als Datenpaket in die App schicken. Von dort wird sie aufs Hörgerät geladen und kann sofort ausprobiert werden. Das verdient auf jeden Fall Extrapunkte in unserem Test.
Sensoren gibt es in dieser Viron 5-Variante nicht, so dass auch das beliebte Gesundheits-Tracking nicht angeboten werden kann. Dabei werden z.B. die Schritte über den Tag gezählt. Wie gesagt - dieses Hörgerät hat diese Funktion nicht an Bord. Mit Geräten wie diesem aus dem Hause Bernafon werden unsere Testberichte immer länger, denn nun gibt es auch noch intelligente Zusatzfunktionen. Verschiedene Assistenten erleichtern Ihnen das Leben und werden in der App personalisiert. Zwingend nötig ist das nicht, macht aber riesig Spaß. Dafür gibt es eine gute Bewertung von uns.
