The Viron 5 MNR T from Bernafon is a small, barely visible hearing aid that is worn behind the ear. By using the receiver (= speaker) that is directly inserted into the ear canal, very good sound transmission is possible. The Viron 5 MNR T is a hearing aid from a price range slightly above the average and is suitable for nearly every hearing need.

Hearing comfort

The hearing comfort determines whether someone enjoys wearing their hearing aids or not. That's why we first looked at how the hearing aid handles background noise. In this model presented by Bernafon, we found few options for influencing comfort. Of course, noise suppression is integrated, which is supposed to reduce tiring background noises. In the Viron 5 MNR T, we have a rather simple form of noise suppression that should be sufficient for normal environments. Although the Viron 5 MNR T has wind reduction, it doesn't really help much outdoors.

Fast, sharp sounds are detected here, but only moderately reduced. The device recognizes whether the microphones should transmit everything or orient themselves forward. This can be helpful in conversation situations, but it doesn't replace true spatial hearing. A few more frequency channels would be desirable, but the existing 12 channels already work quite well.

In this version, Bernafon does not yet work with artificial intelligence.

Operation & connectivity

“Can I make adjustments to my hearing aid myself?” “Is there maybe an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when choosing a hearing aid, so let's take a look at the control and connectivity options. Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found it on the Viron 5 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be disabled if desired. Those who don't like to touch their ear to turn up the volume will be pleased with the optional remote control. This allows for convenient and discreet adjustments to the hearing aid.

We always enjoy being surprised by a hearing aid with a great additional feature. For instance, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. However, this is currently not available in the Viron 5 MNR T. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple tap of a finger in this Bernafon model, as it would require specific sensors in the casing.

Manual operation includes an app. This allows for discreet access to the hearing aid. In addition to adjusting the volume, hearing programs and a few other functions can also be set. The Viron 5 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna and provides the benefit of binaural calling. This even gives us an advantage over normal hearing individuals. We find this great and are happy to award points.

Simplicity & security

Of course, we are also interested in how quickly one can get used to the Viron 5 MNR T and how easy daily use is. The Viron 5 MNR T features a solid everyday automatic that is probably sufficient for a more relaxed life. However, for more complex listening environments, we recommend the additional manual programs. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the hearing aid's volume in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and slowly get used to the new auditory impressions.

Unfortunately, the Viron 5 MNR T is not equipped with a battery, so regular size 312 batteries are required for operation.

The Viron 5 is nearly dust- and waterproof, and with its IP 68 rating, it is certainly well protected against external influences.

Extras

Lastly, we are interested in whether there are any additional goodies: A special tinnitus program can be programmed on request in the Viron 5 MNR T. This allows for the generation of stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and are happy to award extra points.

The option for remote adjustment is great. It is especially helpful when you only want to change a small detail in the hearing aid settings but don't want to drive to the audiologist. Instead, you make contact through the app, and the hearing professional sends a customized data package back the same way.

There are no sensors in this Viron 5 variant, so the popular health tracking feature cannot be offered. For example, steps taken throughout the day are counted. As mentioned, this hearing aid does not have this function. You should take a closer look at the app of this Bernafon device. There are a few extras that significantly expand the functionality of these hearing aids. We really think these additional features are great!

In the overall view, this device ranks low and offers us little more than a solid basic setup. Of course, with the device, you can understand speech, just like with all hearing aids, but not much is done to reduce hearing effort. Our overall rating: 4.51.
