We have tested a discreet hearing aid this time from a still moderate price range. It is the Hansaton AQ Sound FS 3 R. It is worn behind the ear and is intended for mild, moderate, and even strong hearing needs. The comfortable position of the speaker in the ear canal is due to the design of the device, which is why it delivers a nice, clear sound.

Hearing comfort

Hearing aids are supposed to bring speech to the ear, but also sound pleasant. So let's first look at the comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? Are they dampened or transmitted unchanged? Is the hearing aid suitable for a lively everyday life? Here with this test device, solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional is possible. Like in every hearing aid, typical noise cancellation is also included here. It is designed to reduce uniform, roaring background noises to the point where they no longer dominate. With the AQ Sound FS 3 R, we had hoped for a little more control depth, but – well.

With this hearing aid, we are excited about how clearly the wind noise is suppressed and how stable the device works even in stronger winds. Extremely useful is the impulse sound suppression. It grabs all clattering, banging, and crackling noises and reliably dampens them. While the AQ Sound FS 3 R does not have many adjustable equalizer bands, the 12 should suffice for a good listening experience. In our tests, we also look at spatial hearing. Although adaptive microphones are integrated, the wireless connection between the ears is missing, and thus no true 3D hearing can be reconstructed. Still, one can manage well. With a little practice, directional hearing can be retrained.

By the way, you might perceive the sound from this Hansaton device as clearer and more natural, especially in noisy environments. This is probably due to the implemented artificial intelligence. The hearing aid has already been fed with millions of real sounds, which leads to a significantly improved distinction between speech and noise.

Operation & connectivity

Most functions are activated automatically by this Hansaton model. However, it can be very useful to have the option to expand the functionality a bit. In our test, we found out which options we have here. First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very practical, as it is the simplest and quickest way to make changes. The volume can be adjusted through it, and various hearing programs can also be activated. If you prefer not to change anything directly at the ear, you can of course disable the button. We do like the small remote controls, and we found one for this model. This allows you to discreetly make small adjustments to the volume or sound.

Voice control is a modern way of operating hearing aids. Hansaton has integrated this function into its model, saving us the need to fumble for a small button. Now it gets really modern: With tap control, the Hansaton hearing aid can be easily switched. Sensors in the housing detect the touch when you briefly tap your ear with your fingers. And what happens next is something you can determine together with your audiologist. For example, you can activate voice control or switch to a special program.

As is usual today, we also find a smartphone app for the AQ Sound FS 3 R. This app includes solid basic functions and adds a few extra goodies. You no longer need headphones, as it has a wireless option and can directly transmit sounds from the smartphone into your ears – provided the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

How does one cope with the hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we will evaluate. Because only if such a device functions simply and effortlessly can one become accustomed to it. We do not necessarily experience simple, comfortable hearing with the AQ Sound FS 3 R. In a quieter daily routine, one can manage quite well, but as soon as one has a varied hearing experience, manual adjustments become unavoidable. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new auditory impressions.

The AQ Sound FS 3 R is rechargeable and no longer requires hearing aid batteries. This is environmentally friendly, as there are no old batteries to dispose of. At the same time, it is also extremely convenient, as there is no need to carry spare batteries. The hearing aids simply sit in the charging station at night and are ready to use the next morning.

The data sheet certifies the Hansaton device with a certification according to IP protection class 68. Thus, it belongs to the most resilient hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water does not penetrate the casing unless submerged deeper than 1.5 meters. However, be careful. Shampoo, for example, alters the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. In everyday life, however, you can behave completely carefree.

At the end of our test report, there is a little space left for the extra features: The tinnitus program is definitely worth mentioning. Those who are plagued by annoying ear noises will benefit from it. Pleasant, quiet sounds are set up to gently surround the tinnitus. In the end, the tinnitus fades into the background noise and becomes hardly noticeable at all.

Hansaton is keeping up with the times and offers a forward-looking feature with the remote adjustment service. Busy people with little time can contact their audiologist online and have their hearing aids reprogrammed. Hearing aid users who have a longer journey to the specialist store also benefit from this special service.

Many hearing aids still include some health functions today. However, since the AQ Sound FS 3 R does not have any special sensors for this, we cannot present any particular features here. Other hearing aids do have some extended options such as a fall alarm or reminder functions. We do not find those here, and it's not so dramatic, as the standard hearing functions are still the most important.
