The deep placement of the speaker in the ear canal is due to its design, which is why it also delivers a nice, clear sound.

What most hearing aid users find annoying: Exactly, background noise. That’s why we first look at the comfort features included in the test device. With the AQ Sound FS 9 R, we were impressed by the excellent noise management. Normal noise suppression is definitely present. It is designed to dampen constant noises like traffic noise or the sound of the air conditioning. In our test device from Hansaton, there is one of the most powerful noise suppressions on the market.

Once you've had impulse noise suppression in a hearing aid, you don't want to give it up. The AQ Sound FS 9 R has such a feature and can easily handle all short and intense sound events. This includes, for example, the clattering of dishes in the kitchen or footfalls on a hard floor. Hansaton is sure to delight all outdoor fans with this device, as wind is not only pleasantly dampened, but speech understanding should also continue to function smoothly. For a precise, lifelike listening experience, the number of adjustable frequency bands is of great importance. With 20, this Hansaton device is a true top model and allows for a differentiated fine-tuning over several years. A real highlight of this device is spatial hearing. Recognizing directions, estimating distances – with the AQ Sound FS 9 R, all of this is no problem.

Artificial intelligence is also utilized in the signal processing of the AQ Sound FS 9 R. This allows for a much more realistic analysis of the listening environment, and above all, clarity in noisy surroundings is significantly improved.

The operational possibilities of hearing aids today are as simple or as complex as one would like. The basic functions operate fully automatically, of course. We wanted to know how users can further access the AQ Sound FS 9 R. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. With this, one can change the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. The use is, of course, optional. Upon request, there is a remote control for the hearing aid. It allows for effortless volume adjustment. The handling is not only child’s play, but no one will also notice that you are adjusting your hearing aids.

Voice control is a modern way to operate hearing aids. Hansaton has integrated this feature into its model, saving us from having to feel for a tiny button. We are particularly excited about the tap control. A quick tap with the fingers to the ear, and the hearing aid switches to another mode. Here, Hansaton is significantly ahead of others with its model. In our opinion, the tap control is not only contemporary but also incredibly convenient.

An app on the smartphone is supposed to simplify operation, and we have found one for the AQ Sound FS 9 R as well. In addition to the basic functions like volume and programs, there are a few more buttons for personalization. You don’t need headphones anymore, as it has a wireless option and can transfer sounds from the smartphone directly to the ears – as long as the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

We are also interested in how quickly one can get used to the AQ Sound FS 9 R and how easy daily use is. With an exceptionally well-functioning situation automation, the AQ Sound FS 9 R scores points in terms of everyday performance. The finely tuned recognition of the acoustic environment allows us to effortlessly navigate through different listening situations without having to manually readjust. This is exactly what we expect from a hearing aid. The adjustment to the new hearing experience is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. All I have to do is wear my hearing aids regularly.

The AQ Sound FS 9 R contains a battery. We find this very good, as rechargeable hearing aids are absolutely modern. There’s no need to have batteries lying around everywhere, and you don’t have to change the battery in the middle of a concert. The hearing aid simply plugs into the charging station overnight and then has enough energy for the following day.

The data sheet certifies the Hansaton device with an IP protection class 68. This means it is one of the most resilient hearing aids on the market. Dust doesn’t stand a chance, and water cannot enter the housing unless submerged deeper than 1.5 meters. Nevertheless, be cautious. Shampoo, for example, changes the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. However, in everyday life, you can behave completely carefree.

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find some here: A special tinnitus program is programmable in the AQ Sound FS 9 R upon request. This allows for the generation of stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find that very useful and gladly award extra points.

The remote adjustment feature is something we really like. It is very helpful when you only want to make a small change to the hearing aid settings but do not want to drive to the audiologist. Instead, you make contact through the app, and the hearing professional sends back an adjusted data package in the same way.

If Hansaton had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, individual health tracking could even be possible. However, that is not the case here. These points are lost for the AQ Sound FS 9 R in the evaluation. The device from Hansaton focuses on the essential hearing functions and does not offer extras like voice assistants or translation features. While that would have been fun, it is not necessary for a good listening experience.
