This time we tested a slightly visible hearing aid from a price range just above the average. It is the Hansaton AQ sound XC Pro 5 R. It is worn behind the ear and is designed for mild, moderate, and stronger hearing needs. The placement of the speaker directly in the ear canal is due to its design, which is why it also delivers a nice, clear sound.
Hearing comfort
First, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of noises does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied everyday life? Here with this test device, a solid comfort programming by the audiologist is possible. As in all hearing aids, we also find the typical noise suppression here. It is supposed to reduce monotonous, noisy background sounds to the point where they no longer stand out so much. With the AQ sound XC Pro 5 R, the noise suppression can be adjusted to the customer's preferences.
This device features truly excellent wind management, making time spent outdoors enjoyable. Impulsive sounds occur very often in everyday life. There's the dishwasher that needs unloading or the keys being placed on the table. The AQ sound XC Pro 5 R has strong impulse sound management that makes these sounds tolerable. The AQ sound XC Pro 5 R has 14 adjustable frequency bands, putting it in the mid-range. A good acoustician can certainly extract a reasonable sound from it. Spatial hearing may be a bit challenging at first, but once one understands how the microphones behave in specific situations, it becomes quite reliable to assess directions and distances.
The signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence is not yet employed here.

Operation & connectivity
Most hearing aids automatically adapt to their environment. However, it is sometimes very practical to be able to make adjustments yourself. After all, the hearing aid does not know how you are feeling at the moment. We looked into the control options offered by the AQ sound XC Pro 5 R: First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very useful, as it is the simplest and quickest way to make changes. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If you prefer not to adjust anything directly on the ear, you can of course deactivate the button. Those who do not like to touch their ear to increase the volume will appreciate the optional remote control. This allows you to make changes to the hearing aid comfortably and discreetly.
Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Hansaton unfortunately cannot yet. This would be practical if your fingers are not as mobile anymore or if you simply like smart gadgets. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and the device will switch. However, we don’t have this feature at Hansaton, as it would require specific sensors.
The app is definitely very useful. Anyone with a smartphone should download it. Even if the app is not one of our favorites, it is still a useful addition to the AQ sound XC Pro 5 R. We had a lot of fun with the direct, wireless streaming. This means that calls from the smartphone are transmitted to the hearing aids without any additional accessories. This turns the hearing aid into the perfect hands-free system or wireless headphones. Listening to music or watching and listening to videos is also incredibly comfortable.

We are of course also interested in how quickly one can adapt to the AQ sound XC Pro 5 R and how easy it is to use on a daily basis. The integrated situation recognition in the AQ sound XC Pro 5 R is rated as being in the mid-range. The most important loud and quiet situations are recognized and adapted. However, for acoustically more complex moments, this is not quite enough, as one cannot avoid further manual adjustment options. Very important to us in terms of simplicity is the support during the acclimatization process. Especially after having heard poorly for years, it can sometimes be difficult to perceive everything at a natural volume. In our test device, there is an acclimatization manager that helps us adjust the volume in very small increments throughout the adjustment phase. After a few weeks or months, we then reach the calculated amplification level.
An extremely useful development in recent years is, in our opinion, the integrated battery. We are used to recharging electronic devices in our daily lives. The AQ sound XC Pro 5 R is also rechargeable, so we can do away with the annoying battery changes.
We had a carefree everyday life in our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took the hearing aids out with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to soapy bath water or saltwater.

In conclusion, we want to know if the hearing aid perhaps offers any specials: Hansaton has integrated a sound generator that plays some soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.
A very good additional benefit comes from the remote maintenance service. Through the app, you can contact your audiologist and describe your hearing problem. They can adjust the settings accordingly and upload them to the hearing aids via the app. For people with little time or a long journey, this is a great service.
Many hearing aids still come with some health features today. However, since the AQ sound XC Pro 5 R does not have any special sensors for this, we cannot present any particular features here. It would have been nice to have a few lifestyle functions, but those are not available in the AQ sound XC Pro 5 R. Other hearing aids can score with speech translators or fall alarms, but here it remains within the usual scope of functions.
