The Hansaton Wave 13 SP in review
Today we have a previously widely used hearing aid called Wave 13 SP on our test agenda. The manufacturer Hansaton designed it for moderate, stronger, and changing hearing loss and for behind-the-ear use. In terms of price, it is a model from the more affordable category. So, let's take a look:
The Wave hearing aid from Hansaton impresses as a model in the entry-level segment with its simple technology, yet reliably provides an improved hearing experience in everyday life.
Hearing comfort
We all agree that speech understanding is the most important task of hearing aids. From our experience in the hearing acoustics specialty store, we also know that hearing comfort is at least equally important. It’s about processing background noise so that it does not interfere with speech understanding, while still creating a natural sound image. When testing the Wave 13 SP, we only find the essentials regarding hearing comfort. Let’s take a look at the individual features:
Of course, this Hansaton device features noise reduction, as it has become standard. Noise reduction means that constant and rather monotone noises (e.g., air conditioning, vacuum cleaner ...) are dampened. Here, it works only to a very limited extent. Considering the price, that might just fit.
The impulse sound management is not really recommendable in this device. Short, loud sounds still come across quite strongly. Wind noise is also a concern. Many like to spend time outdoors and then are slightly disturbed by the wind. Unfortunately, there is no wind management here, so one simply has to endure the sounds of air movements. The Wave 13 SP has 12 adjustable frequency bands, placing it in the middle range. A good acoustician can certainly extract a reasonable sound from it. We have to forgo spatial hearing with the Wave 13 SP, but at least the microphones can be switched to a focus mode.
Hansaton does not yet use artificial intelligence in this version.
Rating Hearing comfort: 4,8
Operation & connectivity
Basically, the hearing aids work fully automatically, and that is also the mode that most people prefer. However, sometimes it's quite useful to be able to switch to another hearing program or simply adjust the volume in a difficult situation. That's why we're taking a quick look at the operating options of the Wave 13 SP. Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found one in the Wave as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be deactivated if desired. A remote control is available for the Wave 13 SP. It's quite handy, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume up-down option as well as various hearing programs.
We are always delighted when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. But that is currently not available in the Wave 13 SP. Tap Control would have also been an interesting feature. You could change the function with a quick tap on the ear. But that's not available in the Wave 13 SP yet.
An app on the smartphone is supposed to make operation easier, and we found one for the Wave 13 SP as well. In addition to the basic functions like volume and programs, we also find a few more buttons for personalization. Problems with making phone calls with the smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Calls, music, and other sounds are transmitted completely wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls and while listening to music while exercising. Everything worked simply and smoothly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is necessary.
With hands-free calling, hearing aid users can make calls directly through their devices, allowing for convenient, hands-free communication.
Rating Operation & connectivity: 2,0

Hansaton Wave 13 SP: A remote control for hearing aid wearers allows for easy and discreet adjustment of volume and hearing programs directly on the device. This enables users to customize their hearing aids for different situations without having to manually touch the hearing aid. Additionally, the remote control offers more comfort and independence in everyday life, especially for individuals with limited mobility or fine motor skills.

Simplicity & security
No matter how great the hearing aid sounds: nothing is more uncomfortable than a product that constantly presents obstacles in everyday life. That’s why simplicity and safety are very important topics in our hearing aid tests: The first points in the simplicity chapter are given away by the Wave 13 SP, since it lacks automatic adaptation to the environment. We have to manually adjust it until we can manage in the respective listening situation. We give a big plus point for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It gradually increases the start volume in very small steps until my hearing goal is reached. This significantly eases the adjustment to the new sound.
The Wave 13 SP is not rechargeable. It continues to get its energy from disposable batteries size 13, which need to be replaced every few days.
The data sheet certifies the Hansaton device with an IP protection class rating of 68. This makes it one of the most resilient hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water does not penetrate the housing unless submerged deeper than 1.5 m. However, be cautious. Shampoo, for example, changes the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. In everyday life, though, you can behave quite carefree.
The integrated T-coil in hearing aids enables a direct connection to inductive hearing systems, such as those found in public transport, theaters, or churches, providing clear sound transmission without background noise. Additionally, it improves speech intelligibility during phone calls by transmitting the signal directly into the hearing aid.

Extras
We have covered the main factors in our test report. Before we conclude, we are on the lookout for a few extras: for example, a tinnitus option would be interesting. Unfortunately, we did not find any way to relieve tinnitus with the Wave 13 SP.
A real added value is the remote maintenance service. For changing the hearing aid settings, it is no longer necessary to go to the specialist shop, but you can contact the acoustician directly via the app. Through a cloud service, the new data package can then be uploaded to the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.
A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors that can be used to track personal health data, for example. However, the Wave 13 SP does not offer this. The hearing aid also forgoes additional features such as special assistance systems, a fall alarm, or language translators. This is not too problematic, as it does not affect the important hearing functions.
If there are no motor limitations that would preclude the selection of this device, you should consider getting information about Ex-ear hearing aids. They offer clearer sound quality because the speaker sits directly in the ear canal, resulting in less sound loss through the sound tube: 3 important advantages of Ex-ear hearing aids
