The Intent 4 mini Ex R is a small hearing aid in a very sleek design that sits behind the ear. By the clever decision to place the speaker directly in the ear canal, it has already fulfilled the basic requirements for a reasonable sound.

What is most bothersome for hearing aid users: Exactly, background noise. That is why we first look at the comfort features of the test device. The Intent 4 mini Ex R provides customers with comprehensive noise management. Normal noise suppression is definitely present. It is meant to dampen constant noises such as street noise or the hum of the air conditioning. In our test device from Oticon, your expectations should not be too high. Street noise outside the door will certainly be adequately reduced, but what is loud will remain loud.

Additionally, we are surprised by how well the impulse noise management works here. Nothing bangs, nothing rattles – very good! Wind noise becomes a topic whenever the hearing aid microphones are slightly exposed. With the Intent 4 mini Ex R, this is not a problem at all, as it features intelligent, effective wind noise suppression. It not only reduces audible turbulence but also preserves speech understanding. The 14 equalizer bands provide a solid basis for programming the Intent 4 mini Ex R. As sound junkies, we would prefer a few more bands, but for the typical situations we encounter in our daily lives, a decent sound profile can already be created. Spatial hearing requires a little practice with the Intent 4 mini Ex R. But the adaptive microphone system offers good support in social settings.

Let's take a look at how this works with the Intent 4 mini Ex R. First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very practical, as it is the simplest and quickest way to make a change. The volume can be adjusted using this button, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If you prefer not to adjust anything directly at the ear, you can, of course, also disable the button. A remote control is available for the Intent 4 mini Ex R. It is quite handy, fits into your pocket, and offers a volume up-down option as well as various hearing programs.

For some time now, there has been a trend to control hearing aids through voice commands to raise or lower the volume. The idea is really good, but Oticon is not quite there yet with this device. Don't worry, this feature would be nice, but it's not essential. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, a tap control could be possible, which would activate a specific function by tapping your fingers on your ear. However, this option is not available in the Intent 4 mini Ex R.

As expected, we find a suitable app for smartphones. Here we have a powerful app that trusts its users and provides a comprehensive toolbox. Problems when making phone calls with the smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are transmitted completely wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls and when listening to music while exercising. Everything worked simply and smoothly. All that is needed is a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology.

No matter how great the hearing aid sounds: nothing is more uncomfortable than a product that constantly presents us with hurdles in everyday life. That's why simplicity and safety are very important topics in our hearing aid tests: With top-class situation recognition, the Intent 4 mini Ex R completely convinced us. The hearing aid seamlessly adapts to the acoustic environment and rarely requires our intervention. Hearing feels completely normal. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when someone has been hearing poorly for a long time and then wears a hearing aid for the first time, this is a huge relief. The volume does not need to be turned up all at once. One can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost unnoticed the amplification approaches the target.

In our opinion, a very useful development in recent years is the integrated rechargeable battery. We are used to recharging electronic devices in our daily lives. And the Intent 4 mini Ex R is rechargeable as well, allowing us to avoid the hassle of changing batteries.

The Intent 4 is almost dust and water-resistant and, with its IP 68 classification, is certainly well protected against external influences.

Am Ende unseres Testberichtes gibt es noch ein bisschen Platz für die Extra-Features: Ein spezielles Tinnitusprogramm ist im Intent 4 mini Ex R auf Wunsch programmierbar. Damit können stimulierende, angenehme Geräusche generiert werden, die vom Tinnitus ablenken, wenn er mal wieder besonders stark ist. Das finden wir sehr nützlich und vergeben gerne Extrapunkte.

Ein cleveres Tool ist der integrierte Fernwartungsservice. Fast jeder hat ein Smartphone, und Zeit ist ein knappes Gut. Deshalb ist so ein Fernwartungsservice absolut angemessen. Wer eine neue Programmierung seiner Hörgeräte benötigt, kann ganz einfach über die App Kontakt zum Akustiker aufnehmen und seine Hörwünsche beschreiben. Über einen Cloud-Service kann der Profi dann eine individuelle Einstellung als Datenpaket in die App schicken. Von dort wird sie aufs Hörgerät geladen und kann sofort ausprobiert werden. Das verdient auf jeden Fall Extrapunkte in unserem Test. 

Viele Hörgeräte haben heute noch ein paar Gesundheits-Funktionen dabei. Da das Intent 4 mini Ex R aber keine speziellen Sensoren dafür hat, können wir hier keine Besonderheiten vorstellen. Mit Geräten wie diesem aus dem Hause Oticon werden unsere Testberichte immer länger, denn nun gibt es auch noch intelligente Zusatzfunktionen. Verschiedene Assistenten erleichtern Ihnen das Leben und werden in der App personalisiert. Zwingend nötig ist das nicht, macht aber riesig Spaß. Dafür gibt es eine gute Bewertung von uns.

Wer auf Spitzentechnik verzichten möchte, aber trotzdem einen bequemen Höralltag wünscht, der ist hier an der richtigen Stelle.
