The Oticon Jet PX 1 CIC in review
Once again, we find ourselves in the test laboratory, and this time we had a product from Oticon in our hands, or rather on our ears. The full product name is Jet PX 1 CIC, and it is categorized among devices with a reasonable price in the upper mid-range. Due to its audiologically sensible wearing position directly in the ear canal, it has good acoustic properties. The Jet PX 1 CIC is worn in the ear, and it is a discreet, slim-shaped hearing aid for moderate, more severe, and varying degrees of hearing loss.
Hearing comfort
In the first chapter, we evaluate the quality of noise management. We call it listening comfort, as these features determine how pleasant the hearing aid user perceives the sound of their hearing devices. However, sounds can vary greatly and require different tools for suppression. In the Jet PX 1 CIC, we found few options to influence comfort. First, we look at noise suppression. It is meant to tame everyday sounds like ventilation or refrigerator noises. In this Oticon model, we find rather below-average background noise suppression. Noise-sensitive individuals will have to make some compromises in listening comfort.
According to the manufacturer, impulse noise suppression is integrated, but we felt little of it. The Jet PX 1 CIC does have wind reduction, but it doesn't really help outdoors. A few more frequency channels would be desirable, but the existing 14 channels are already quite workable. The special design of the Jet PX 1 CIC proves to be a stroke of luck when it comes to spatial hearing. The microphones sit deep in the ear canal, and that's exactly where sound reaches even normal hearing individuals. Therefore, spatial hearing does not have to be artificially recreated; it occurs naturally.
An exciting topic in hearing acoustics is the use of artificial intelligence, but this Oticon model does not yet implement that.

Operation & connectivity
Would you like to be able to adjust something on your hearing aids yourself? We believe it can be quite useful to have one or the other control option. Let's take a look at how it works with the Jet PX 1 CIC. The simplest control option is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This one has that too. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for step-by-step adjustment of the volume. Or do you need different special programs for your professional daily routine or your hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. Anyone who wants to keep everything in automatic mode can simply ignore the button or even have it disabled. Unfortunately, this hearing aid cannot be adjusted via a remote control – that loses a few points.
Voice commands are a quite new way of controlling hearing aids. However, we do not have this option in this model yet. That's not a big deal - the main thing is that you can hear well. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is a tap control. You simply tap your fingers on your ear, which in turn triggers a specific function. But this Oticon device does not have this option.
Quickly turning up the volume via the app - unfortunately, that's not possible with the Jet PX 1 CIC. An app for this is not available. However, that is irrelevant if you are not a smartphone user anyway. A wireless connection to a smartphone or laptop is not possible, as the necessary hardware components are missing. You should consider carefully whether you can do without this feature, but why not just try it out.

Simplicity & security
We continue our test and try out how easy this hearing aid is to use. After all, it should simplify the everyday life of hearing aid users and not complicate it further. Unfortunately, the ease of hearing with the Jet PX 1 CIC is not so good. The situation automatic is quite limited, and we receive little support when it gets loud around us. This can be compensated for by using the manual adjustment options. However, this hardly scores points in terms of simplicity. The integrated acclimatization manager can be a great help when entering the world of hearing aids. Its task is to gradually increase the volume of the hearing aid in tiny increments until the target volume is reached. This way, you can relax and gradually get used to the new hearing impressions. More information about acclimatization and further hearing aids with this feature can be found here: Acclimatization to Hearing Aids.
The Jet PX 1 CIC is not rechargeable; it operates with hearing aid batteries. Unlike a rechargeable battery, it does not need to be charged daily, but the size 10 battery needs to be replaced after a few days.
We also take a look at the robustness of the housing and discover in the data sheet the protection class IP 68. This means that dust cannot penetrate at all, and water only becomes dangerous after longer submersion. There is also protection against contact.
Rating Simplicity & security: 2,8
Extras
Sometimes, hearing aids come with additional features that can be quite useful. Let's see how it is with this Oticon device: A special tinnitus program can be programmed on request in the Jet PX 1 CIC. This allows for the generation of stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from tinnitus when it's particularly strong. We find this very useful and are happy to give extra points.
What about remote maintenance? Such online services save the trip to the specialist store because you can contact an acoustics professional directly through the app. Unfortunately, we didn't find anything like that for the Jet PX 1 CIC. Too bad, it would have been a great additional tool.
If Oticon had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, individualized health tracking could even be possible. However, that is not the case here. These points are lost for the Jet PX 1 CIC in the rating. The device from Oticon focuses on essential hearing functions and does not offer extras like voice assistants or translation functions. While that would have been fun, it is not necessary for a good listening experience.
Rating Extras: 3,3
