The Oticon Own 3 ITC in review

Here we take a look at a hearing aid at a reasonable price from the upper mid-range that is worn in the ear. It is called Own 3 ITC and comes from the manufacturer Oticon. It can be used by all people with mild, moderate, and greater hearing needs who desire a small-sized hearing aid. Due to its comfortable and acoustically advantageous position in the ear canal, it has very good sound properties.

Hearing comfort

The hearing comfort determines whether someone enjoys wearing their hearing aids or not. Therefore, we first looked at how the hearing aid handles background noise. With this model introduced by Oticon, a solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional is possible. Of course, noise suppression is integrated to alleviate tiring background noises. The Own 3 ITC may not be the most powerful version, but in everyday life, the noise suppression should suffice. For windy situations outdoors, Oticon has included wind noise reduction, which is quite useful and is simply part of a modern comfort setup.

A pulse noise attenuator for short, sharp sounds is reasonably integrated here and is more than enough for everyday use. An adaptable directional microphone helps separate speech from noise, but we do miss a true 3D experience. A high number of frequency bands aids in the separation of speech from noise. The Own 3 ITC certainly ranks well with its 18 bands.

By the way, you might perceive the sound from this Oticon device as clearer and more natural, especially when there's a lot of noise. This is likely due to the implemented artificial intelligence. The hearing aid has already been fed millions of real sounds, leading to a significantly improved distinction between speech and noise.

Operation & connectivity

Almost every one of us owns a smartphone, so it's natural to ask whether it can be connected to the new hearing aid. Let's take a look at how connectivity and usability stand with the Own 3 ITC. The simplest way to operate is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This one has it too. It can be programmed according to your preferences. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for gradual adjustments of the volume. Or do you need different special programs for your professional life or hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. Anyone who wants to leave everything in automatic mode can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. A discreet way to adjust the hearing aid is with the remote control. It fits in any pocket. When the person you're talking to speaks too softly again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional listening programs for music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.

Voice commands are a fairly new way to operate hearing aids. However, this model does not have this feature yet. That's not a big deal - the main thing is that one can hear well. This Oticon model does not have a control via a simple fingertip, as it would have required certain sensors in the housing.

As is common today, we also find a smartphone app for the Own 3 ITC. This app includes solid basic functions and adds a few goodies on top. The Own 3 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna and allows for binaural phone calls. This even gives us an advantage over normal hearing individuals. We find that great and are happy to give it points.

Simplicity & security

Now let's take a look at how the usage in everyday life is structured. Is the handling simple? Do I get a safe device? The situation recognition integrated into the Own 3 ITC is ranked in the middle range. The most important loud and quiet situations are recognized and adapted. However, for acoustically more complex moments, this is not quite sufficient, as one cannot avoid further manual adjustment options. We give a big plus point for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It raises the start volume in very small increments until my hearing goal is reached. This significantly eases the adjustment to the new sound.

Unfortunately, the Own 3 ITC is not equipped with a battery, so regular size 312 batteries are required for operation.

The hearing aid has been classified into protection class IP 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust ingress. Water also cannot easily damage the hearing aid. Thus, it is well-prepared for outdoor activities where it can get wet and dirty. However, please do not swim or bathe with the hearing aids. Bath additives or even the salt content in seawater can alter the composition and ultimately cause damage.

Extras

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find some here: The tinnitus program is definitely worth mentioning. Those plagued by annoying ear noises will benefit from it. Pleasant, soft sounds are adjusted to gently surround the tinnitus. In the end, the tinnitus fades into the background noise and becomes hardly noticeable at all.

The ability to adjust settings remotely is something we really like. It is very helpful whenever you want to make just a small change to the hearing aid settings but don't want to drive to the audiologist for it. Instead, you can contact them via the app, and the hearing professional sends an adjusted data package back through the same channel.

If Oticon had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, it could even allow for individual health tracking. However, that is not the case here. These points are a loss for the Own 3 ITC in the evaluation. Get even more out of the Own 3 ITC by utilizing the smart lifestyle features. They expand the range of the hearing aids with various assistance programs and significantly enhance the functionality.
