The Oticon Own SI 2 CIC in review
To create a hearing aid test report, we take a close look at the hearing aids and also wear them ourselves for a while, if possible. This time it was the Own SI 2 CIC from Oticon, a device from the highest quality segment that can compensate for mild, moderate, and even severe hearing losses. The Own SI 2 CIC is a petite, small hearing aid that sits in the ear. Due to its inconspicuous placement in the ear canal, it has already met the basic requirements for decent sound.
Hearing comfort
What is most annoying for hearing aid users? Exactly, background noise. Therefore, let’s first take a look at the comfort features included in the test device. The Own SI 2 CIC provides customers with comprehensive noise management. A normal noise suppression feature is definitely present. It is designed to dampen constant sounds like street noise or the hum of an air conditioner. In our test device from Oticon, the manufacturer has made an effort to include efficient noise reduction.
Short, loud sounds are quickly recognized and effectively reduced in the Own SI 2 CIC, thanks to an adjustable impulse sound suppressor. Wind noise is only perceived as bothersome when it directly hits a hearing aid microphone. However, since this model from Oticon sits very deep in the ear canal, that cannot happen. This device is therefore ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. The number of frequency bands is very important for good speech-noise distinction. With 20 frequency bands, this hearing aid is among the top and offers excellent adjustment options. Adaptive microphone systems facilitate spatial hearing. However, you need some time to get used to the new sound; especially at the beginning, it may not always be clear where a sound is coming from.
It is interesting that artificial intelligence also plays a role in the signal processing here. The sound is not only analyzed based on typical frequency patterns. Particularly intense, noisy situations are thus perceived as more realistic and pleasant.

Operation & connectivity
Digital hearing aids have long evolved beyond just the basic amplification function. Apps and other control options significantly expand their functionality, which is why we are also looking at this important topic with the Own SI 2 CIC from Oticon. First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very useful, as it is the easiest and quickest way to make adjustments. The volume can be adjusted through this, and various hearing programs can also be activated. If you prefer not to make adjustments directly at the ear, you can, of course, deactivate the button. Unfortunately, this hearing aid cannot be adjusted via a remote control – this loses a few points.
The modern form of control via voice command is not yet found in the Own SI 2 CIC. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control feature. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly to switch modes. However, we do not have this at Oticon, as it would have required specific sensors.
Quickly adjusting the volume via an app is unfortunately not possible with the Own SI 2 CIC. An app for this purpose is not available. However, this is irrelevant if you are not a smartphone user anyway. A wireless connection to a smartphone or laptop is not possible, as the necessary hardware components are lacking. You should carefully consider whether you can do without this feature, but you could just try it out.

Simplicity & security
Our analysis also addresses the practicality of hearing aids in everyday life. It focuses on robustness, but also on special comfort features that aim to make daily use as simple as possible. The Own SI 2 CIC performs excellently in situation recognition. Anyone looking for a comprehensive and powerful full automation in their hearing aid, who prefers minimal manual adjustments, will find this to be well suited. The adaptive algorithms untangle the individual sound events in the environment and present the soundscape clearly and precisely. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually raises the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually acclimatize to the new auditory impressions.
The Own SI 2 CIC is not rechargeable. It is powered by hearing aid batteries size 10. Disadvantage: The batteries need to be disposed of after use. Advantage: Daily recharging of batteries is unnecessary, and the hearing aid operates continuously for several days on one battery.
The Own SI 2 is nearly dust and waterproof and, with its IP 68 rating, is certainly well protected against external influences.
Rating Simplicity & security: 1,8
Extras
Before we reach the end, let's take a look at the extras: Oticon has integrated a sound generator that plays soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can help distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.
In mobile times like these, a remote service through an app would be very helpful. This would allow one to conveniently create a new hearing aid program from home. Unfortunately, this service is not available for the Own SI 2 CIC. Therefore, any change requests still require a visit to the specialist store.
Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Oticon model lacks the sensors for this service. It would have been nice to have some lifestyle features, but these are not available in the Own SI 2 CIC. Other hearing aids may boast features like language translation or fall detection, but here it remains within the usual range of functions.
Rating Extras: 3,3
Conclusion: Oticon Own SI 2 CIC
With an overall grade of 2.5, this model holds its own in the mid-range. It has quite a decent comfort equipment on board that is sufficient for typical everyday moments and provides a satisfactory listening experience.
