The Oticon Own SI 4 CIC in review

We are once again in the test lab, and this time we had a product from Oticon in our hands, or rather, on our ear. The full product name is Own SI 4 CIC, and it is categorized as a reasonably priced device in the upper mid-range. Due to the placement directly in the ear canal, it has good acoustic properties. The Own SI 4 CIC is worn in the ear, and it is a small mini hearing aid for mild to severe hearing losses.

Hearing comfort

First, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of noises does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied daily life? Here with this test device, a solid comfort programming by the audiologist is possible. As in all hearing aids, we also find the typical background noise suppression here. It aims to reduce monotonous, noisy ambient sounds so much that they are not as prominent. With the Own SI 4 CIC, we had hoped for a bit more adjustment depth, but – well.

Those who enjoy being outdoors will like this Oticon device. Normally, wind noise can be somewhat bothersome. However, here it does not play a role, as the outer ear provides good mechanical protection. Our test discovered an impulse sound attenuation feature. It slightly dampens sharp, sudden noises. With 14 frequency channels, you can already achieve quite a good sound. A passionate musician might not be completely satisfied with it, but for normal hearing and sound needs, this number is more than sufficient. The localization of directions when listening is relatively difficult, as there is nothing in the Own SI 4 CIC that reconstructs spatial hearing.

Artificial intelligence has also made its way into hearing aids, such as in the Own SI 4 CIC. This provides much more data to identify speech and noise. In our experience, the sound of hearing aids with AI is perceived as particularly precise and realistic.

Rating Hearing comfort: 3,2

Operation & connectivity

Most features of this Oticon model are activated automatically. However, it is sometimes very useful to be able to expand the functionality further. In our test, we found out what options we have here. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. This can be used to adjust the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. The use, of course, is optional. Is the Own SI 4 remote controllable? Unfortunately not; there is no suitable device available.

The modern form of operation via voice command is not yet present in the Own SI 4 CIC. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a quick tap of the finger, without needing to press a button. However, this feature has not been implemented here yet.

Although smartphone apps are offered for many hearing aids today, Oticon unfortunately does not provide one for its Own SI 4 CIC yet. A wireless connection to a smartphone or laptop is not possible, as the necessary hardware components are missing. One should carefully consider whether they can do without this feature, but feel free to try it out.

Simplicity & security

Now let's briefly talk about everyday practicality. Is the Own SI 4 CIC user-friendly and easy to handle? Does it have water protection? Here are our findings: Unfortunately, the simple hearing feature of the Own SI 4 CIC is not very good. The automatic situation setting is quite limited, and we receive little support when it gets loud around us. This can be compensated by using the manual adjustment options. However, this hardly scores points in terms of simplicity. A great bonus in this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially if someone has been hearing poorly for a long time and is wearing a hearing aid for the first time, this is a huge relief. The volume does not have to be turned up immediately. You can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost unnoticed, the amplification approaches the target.

The Own SI 4 CIC is not rechargeable; it operates with hearing aid batteries. Unlike a rechargeable battery, it does not need to be charged daily, but the size 10 battery will be changed after a few days.

With IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand a variety of adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it can withstand prolonged submersion in water, and it is also protected against touches.

Rating Simplicity & security: 2,8

Extras

We have addressed the most important factors in our test report. Before we conclude, we are looking for a few extras: Are you among those suffering from tinnitus? Then you could use the optional tinnitus program in the Own SI 4 CIC. Soft, gentle sounds are tailored to your hearing and engage all areas of the inner ear. It's nothing more than a distraction maneuver, and it works surprisingly well. The tinnitus fades into the general noise and no longer bothers. It's a simple yet effective tool and earns extra points from us.

Unfortunately, there is no option for remote tuning. So, anyone needing optimization and wanting to change their hearing aid settings will have to visit a hearing professional.

There are no sensors in this Own SI 4 variant, so the popular health tracking cannot be offered. For example, steps are counted throughout the day. As mentioned - this hearing aid does not have this function on board. This Oticon hearing aid does not have any additional lifestyle options. Elsewhere, there are voice assistants or reminder functions, but you don't need that for good hearing. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.

Rating Extras: 3,3

Conclusion: Oticon Own SI 4 CIC

With an overall grade of 3.2, this model holds its own in the mid-range. It has quite a decent comfort features on board, which is sufficient for typical everyday moments and provides a satisfactory listening experience.
