This test report is about the Real 2 mini Ex R. It was developed by Oticon and covers moderate, severe, and changing hearing losses. This variant is worn behind the ear. Real 2 mini Ex R is a thin, small hearing aid from the upper segment of the hearing aid prices. We achieve clean sound transmission through the receiver (= speaker), which is placed directly in the ear canal.

The simplest operating option is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This one has it as well. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for step-by-step volume adjustments. Or do you need different special programs for your professional daily life or hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. Anyone who wants to keep everything in automatic mode can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. A very practical option is the small remote control that is available optionally. For us, this is one of the most convenient ways to adjust the hearing aid louder or quieter or switch to another hearing program. No one notices anything; there’s no need to reach for your ear.

We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control here. But currently, there is none in the Real 2 mini Ex R. Besides buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control. This means that you can simply tap your ear lightly, and the device switches. However, we don’t have that here at Oticon, as it would have required specific sensors.

The best way to set up the Real 2 mini Ex R is with the corresponding app. The first apps from earlier times just had a single screen, but this one offers far more than just the usual volume control. We definitely give points for that. Problems with phone calls using a smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are completely transmitted wirelessly into the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls and while listening to music during sports. Everything worked simply and smoothly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz radio technology is needed.

Now let's take a look at how the usage in everyday life is shaped. Is the handling simple? Do I get a safe device? A well-functioning situation recognition already creates a lot of relaxation in everyday hearing. You don’t have to constantly switch the device and can easily surrender to the automated adjustment. The adaptation to the new hearing experience is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I don’t have to do anything more than wear my hearing aids regularly.

The Real 2 mini Ex R comes with a charger because it has built-in batteries. That is modern, user-friendly, and what we also expect from a modern hearing aid.

We had a carefree everyday life during our test thanks to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took the hearing aids out with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bath water or saltwater.

Sometimes there are additional features in hearing aids that can be quite useful. Let's see how it is with this Oticon device: We noticed the tinnitus option here. Those who wish can have a special tinnitus program set up. This applies gentle noise to the ears if needed to distract from the annoying tinnitus. The sounds can be tailored to personal hearing preferences.

A clever tool is the integrated remote care service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a precious commodity. Therefore, such a remote care service is absolutely appropriate. Anyone who needs a new programming for their hearing aids can easily contact the audiologist through the app and describe their hearing wishes. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send a personalized setting as a data package to the app. This will be loaded onto the hearing aid from there and can be tried out immediately. This definitely deserves extra points in our test.

There are no sensors in this Real 2 variant, so the popular health tracking cannot be offered. This would count, for example, the steps taken throughout the day. As mentioned, this hearing aid does not have this function on board. We really liked the additional features included in the Real 2 mini Ex R. Various assistants support your daily life beyond hearing and can be configured in the app. Such hearing aids are hard to give up. By the way: These lifestyle features are often still being worked on, so it's possible that they may change depending on updates.
