We tested a small, barely visible hearing aid this time from a good, mid-range quality level. It is the Oticon Real 3 mini Ex T. It is worn behind the ear and is designed for mild, moderate, and strong hearing needs. The cleverly chosen placement of the speaker in the ear canal owes its design to the device's shape, which is why it delivers a nice, clear sound.
Hearing comfort
What is most bothersome to most hearing aid users: Exactly, the background noise. That’s why we first take a look at what comfort features the test device offers. The manufacturer provides a comprehensive noise management system with the Real 3 mini Ex T. A normal noise suppression capability is definitely present. It is designed to dampen constant noises like traffic noise or the hum of the air conditioning. In our test device from Oticon, we are not dealing with the most powerful variant, but the noise suppression should suffice for everyday use.
The noise filter in this hearing aid is quite solid and practical for daily use. The hearing comfort package also includes wind noise suppression. This works very reliably, and we wouldn't want to do without it anymore. Those who want a hearing aid with a lot of flexibility will find the Real 3 mini Ex T to be a good choice. It has 18 frequency bands and thus offers great adjustment options. The sound can be modified according to individual preferences, even after several years. Spatial hearing requires a bit of practice with the Real 3 mini Ex T. However, the adaptive microphone system provides good support in social settings.

In our test, we discovered the following access options: Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Real 3 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be disabled if desired. A discreet way to adjust the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits in any pocket. When the person speaking is too quiet again, one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.
Voice commands are a relatively new way to operate hearing aids. However, this model does not yet have this capability. That's not a big deal - the main thing is to be able to hear well. This Oticon model does not offer control of the hearing aids with a simple tap, as it would require certain sensors in the casing.
Smartphone apps are now often offered for better usability of hearing aids. The app from Oticon is, in our estimation, one of the better ones because it provides a good set of adjustment options. For our digital everyday life, a streaming option would be nice. The device in question meets our wish and includes a 2.4 GHz wireless module. With this, you can send calls and sounds directly from the smartphone to the hearing aids.

Very important in terms of simplicity for us is the support during the acclimatization process. Especially after having heard poorly for years, it is sometimes hard to perceive everything at a natural volume. Our test device has an acclimatization manager that helps us with very small volume adjustments throughout the habituation phase. After several weeks or months, we then reach the calculated amplification level.

We had a carefree everyday life in our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took the hearing aids out with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bath water or seawater.

Soft, gentle sounds are tailored to your hearing and engage all areas of the inner ear. It's nothing more than a distraction maneuver, and it works surprisingly well. The tinnitus fades into the general noise and is no longer annoying. This is a simple but effective tool, and it earns extra points from us.
A real added value is the remote maintenance service. For a change in hearing aid settings, you no longer have to go to the specialist store, but can directly contact the acoustician through the app. Through a cloud service, you can then load the new data package into the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.
Tracking health data is a genuine added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Oticon model lacks the sensors for this service. In conjunction with a smartphone, the Real 3 mini Ex T surprises us with a few nice lifestyle features. It's definitely worth getting thoroughly familiar with the app and using the offered assistance programs.
