The HearLink 5010 MNR from Philips is a small, slim hearing aid that is worn behind the ear. By utilizing the placement of the speaker directly in the ear canal, very good sound transmission is possible. The HearLink 5010 MNR is a hearing aid of good, mid-range quality and is suitable for mild to moderate hearing loss.
Hearing comfort
What is most annoying for hearing aid users? Exactly, the background noise. That's why let's first look at what comfort features the test device offers. With the HearLink 5010 MNR, we found few options for comfort adjustment. A normal noise suppression is definitely present. It is meant to dampen constant sounds like traffic noise or the hum of the air conditioning. In our test device from Philips, we shouldn’t expect too much. Speech and sounds are quite close together here. But in acoustically simple situations, that should be sufficient.
After all, the HearLink 5010 MNR includes a so-called noise filter. But is that always enough? We found a basic wind detection, but unfortunately, there are no adjustable settings. The HearLink 5010 MNR doesn't have many adjustable equalizer bands, but the 12 should be enough for a good listening experience. We miss a good spatial sound, but the automatic focus can indeed be helpful in situations with multiple people.
An exciting topic in audiology is the use of artificial intelligence, but this Philips model does not apply that yet.

Operation & connectivity
Almost everyone of us owns a smartphone, so the question arises whether it can also be connected to the new hearing aid. Let’s take a look at the connectivity and usability of the HearLink 5010 MNR. Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the HearLink 5010 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be disabled if desired. Those who prefer not to touch their ear to adjust the volume will be pleased with the optional remote control, allowing for comfortable and discreet changes to the hearing aid.
Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Philips unfortunately cannot yet. That would be practical if fingers are not very agile or if one simply likes smart gadgets. If there were sensors in the hearing aid, a tap control could be conceivable, which would activate a specific function by tapping the ear with the fingers. However, this option is not available in the HearLink 5010 MNR.
It is very convenient to adjust the hearing aids via the app. There is also a free app for the HearLink 5010 MNR. In our opinion, the range of features is mediocre but mostly sufficient. It’s best to try it out in demo mode beforehand. For our digital daily life, a streaming option would be nice. The device in question fulfills our wish and comes with a 2.4 GHz radio module. This allows phone calls and sounds to be sent directly from the smartphone to the hearing aids.

The HearLink 5010 MNR features a solid everyday automation that is likely sufficient for a calmer life. However, for more complex hearing environments, we recommend the additional manual programs. Very important in terms of simplicity is the support during the acclimatization phase. Especially after years of hearing poorly, it can sometimes be difficult to perceive everything at a natural volume. Our test device includes an acclimatization manager that helps us with very small volume adjustments throughout the adjustment phase. After a few weeks or months, we then reach the calculated amplification level.
The HearLink 5010 MNR is not equipped with a rechargeable battery, so it is not rechargeable. It uses a hearing aid battery of size 312 for power, which needs to be replaced every few days.
With an IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse influences. Dust cannot enter, it can endure being submerged in water for a longer period, and it is also protected against contact.

Before we come to the end, let's take a look at the extras: For example, a tinnitus option would be interesting. Unfortunately, we did not discover any option in the HearLink 5010 MNR to alleviate tinnitus.
The ability for remote fitting is really good. This is especially helpful when you just want to make a small change to the hearing aid settings but don't want to go to the hearing care professional. Instead, you make contact via the app, and the hearing professional sends back an adjusted data package in the same way.
A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors, which can be used to track personal health data, for example. However, the HearLink 5010 MNR does not offer this feature. Digital algorithms and suitable apps increasingly allow the integration of lifestyle functions that support your daily life. We are impressed by what hearing aids like this one from Philips can do today. Be sure to try it out!
