Could this hearing aid from Philips' program be the right one for you? In our review of the HearLink 5030 CIC, we have highlighted the most important aspects. We get a small, barely visible hearing aid at a reasonable price from the upper mid-range, which is worn in the ear. The natural, cleverly chosen fit directly in the ear canal lays the foundation for good hearing success, as the sound has only a very short distance to travel to the eardrum. This way, all sounds truly reach the place where we want them to.

The HearLink 5030 CIC provides sufficient amplification for moderate, severe, and fluctuating hearing losses.

Hearing comfort

What is most bothersome for hearing aid users: Exactly, background noise. That's why we first look at the comfort features included in the test device. The HearLink 5030 CIC allows for solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional. Normal noise suppression is definitely present. It is designed to dampen constant noises like street noise or the hum of an air conditioner. In our test device from Philips, this works quite well. In a normal hearing environment, you can certainly manage with it.

Short, loud sounds are quickly recognized and effectively reduced in the HearLink 5030 CIC, thanks to an adjustable impulse sound suppressor. Wind noise is also a topic. Many like to spend time outdoors and then are somewhat disturbed by the wind. Unfortunately, there is no wind management here, so you simply have to endure the sounds of air movement. With 18 frequency channels, the HearLink 5030 CIC clearly belongs to the better devices and allows for individual, well-sounding programming. With the HearLink 5030 CIC, you don't have to reconstruct 3D hearing, as it remains completely intact. This is made possible by its deep fit in the ear canal.

Interestingly, artificial intelligence also plays a role in signal processing here. Sound is not only analyzed based on typical frequency patterns. Particularly intense, noisy situations are perceived as more realistic and pleasant.

Operation & connectivity

"Can I adjust something on my hearing aid myself?" "Is there possibly an app?" These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when selecting a hearing aid, which is why we will take a look at the operating and connection options. Often, there is a button on the hearing aid, but we did not find one on this model. Sometimes, this control element is omitted in favor of a smaller design. This is not too dramatic since most functions in the hearing aid operate automatically anyway. Unfortunately, this hearing aid cannot be adjusted via a remote control – a few points are lost there.

We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. However, it is currently not available in the HearLink 5030 CIC. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a short tap of the finger, without the need to press an extra button. But this feature has not yet been implemented here.

We missed an app for the HearLink 5030 CIC during the test. If operating via smartphone is important to you, you should look for a different model. A wireless connection to a smartphone or laptop is not possible as the corresponding hardware components are missing. One should carefully consider whether they can do without this feature, but why not just try it out.

Simplicity & security

Another point in our checklist is handling. Does everything work simply and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? Typical hearing situations that everyone experiences in their environment are reliably recognized and adjusted through automatic settings. For more specific, recurring requirements, however, one cannot do without using the manual listening programs. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when one has been hearing poorly for a long time and then wears a hearing aid for the first time, it is an enormous relief. This means that the volume does not have to be immediately turned up to full. One can start at a lower level and gradually and almost imperceptibly, the amplification approaches the target.

The HearLink 5030 CIC gets its power from small disposable batteries that need to be changed every few days. While this is not rocket science, it should be considered, especially with motor difficulties. A rechargeable battery would be much easier to handle.

The hearing aid has been classified into IP protection class 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust infiltration. Water also cannot easily damage the hearing aid. Thus, it is well equipped for outdoor activities where it can get wet and dirty. However, do not necessarily go swimming or bathing with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can alter the composition and ultimately cause damage.

Extras

Manchmal gibt es in den Hörgeräten noch Zusatzfunktionen, die ganz nützlich sein können. Mal sehen, wie das bei diesem Philips-Gerät ist: Ein Tinnitusprogramm wäre so ein zusätzliches Goodie. Davon könnten viele Menschen profitieren, die unter ihren Ohrgeräuschen leiden. Aber leider hat das HearLink 5030 CIC keine Tinnitusoption und vergibt ein paar Punkte im Test.

Eine Möglichkeit zur Ferneinstellung gibt es leider nicht. Wer also Optimierungsbedarf hat und seine Hörgeräteinstellung verändern lassen will, kommt um einen Besuch beim Akustik-Profi nicht umhin. 

Das Tracken von Gesundheitsdaten ist ein echter Mehrwert in modernen Hörgeräten. Für diesen Dienst fehlen diesem Philips-Modell allerdings die Sensoren.  Der Funktionsumfang im HearLink 5030 CIC beschränkt sich auf das normale Hören, was auch völlig in Ordnung ist. Zusatzfunktionen wie Sturzalarm oder Siri-Verknüpfungen haben schon einen ordentlichen Mehrwert, sind aber für einen guten Hörausgleich nicht relevant.

Mit der Endnote 3,05 behauptet sich dieses Modell im mittleren Bereich. Es hat eine ganz passable Komfortausstattung mit an Bord, die für die typischen Alltagsmomente reicht und ein zufriedenstellendes Hörerlebnis schafft.
