The Philips HearLink 5040 MNR T in review

Philips presents the HearLink 5040 MNR T, a model from a price range slightly above the average. It can compensate for both mild and more significant hearing needs. It is a small, barely visible hearing aid that delivers good sound due to the deep positioning of the speaker in the ear canal. It is worn behind the ear.

Hearing comfort

First, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of sounds does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied daily life? Here, with this test device, the manufacturer offers the customer a comprehensive sound management system. As with all hearing aids, we also find the typical background noise suppression here. It is designed to reduce monotonous, noisy ambient sounds to the point where they are no longer so prominent. The noise suppression of the HearLink 5040 MNR T is rather average, but it is somewhat adjustable.

A multi-stage wind noise management system is also included. This ensures that listening outdoors is pleasant and free from disturbances. There is also a so-called impulse noise filter, which slightly dampens short and loud sounds. This is a useful feature, but we would have liked a bit more depth in the control. A high number of frequency bands assists in the separation of speech and noise. The HearLink 5040 MNR T certainly ranks high with its 18 bands. Spatial hearing is initially a bit challenging, but once you understand how the microphones behave in certain situations, you can reliably assess directions and distances.

Interestingly, artificial intelligence also plays a role in signal processing here. Sound is not only analyzed based on typical frequency patterns. Especially intense, noisy situations are perceived as more realistic and pleasant.

Operation & connectivity

Most functions are activated automatically by this Philips model. However, it can be very useful to be able to expand the range of functions a bit. In our test, we found out what options we have here. For those who want to adjust the volume quickly and easily, there is a button on the device. Additional programs for special hearing situations can also be selected through this. The small remote control that is available as an option is very practical. For us, it is one of the most comfortable ways to adjust the hearing aid volume or switch to another hearing program. No one notices, and there is no need to reach for the ear.

In the test, we found no voice control option. This function is not necessarily needed, but we would have been pleased nonetheless. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control feature. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and then the device switches. However, we do not have this at Philips, as it would have required specific sensors.

An app is the perfect companion for hearing aids. The app for the HearLink 5040 MNR T is definitely impressive. It is a sensible addition since it can make life significantly easier in critical hearing situations with its various adjustment options. You no longer need headphones, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds directly from the smartphone to the ears – provided the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

Simplicity & security

Now let's take a look at how the use of the device is in everyday life. Is the handling easy? Do I receive a safe device? The situational automation of the HearLink 5040 MNR T contains almost everything one can experience in everyday life. It provides me with the perfect setting at any time without me having to do anything actively. Especially in varying phases, this is extremely convenient and makes me almost forget the hearing aid is there. Very important regarding simplicity is the support during the acclimatization phase. Especially after having heard poorly for years, it can sometimes be difficult to perceive everything at a natural volume. In our test device, there is an acclimatization manager that helps us with very small volume adjustments throughout the adjustment period. After a few weeks or months, we then reach the calculated amplification level.

The MNR T from HearLink 5040 is powered by 312 disposable batteries, it is not rechargeable. This has its advantages and disadvantages. For the decision between "battery or rechargeable," we have provided a guide here: Rechargeable hearing aids or batteries: 6 criteria for your decision.

We had a carefree everyday life in our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took out the hearing aids with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bathwater or saltwater.

Extras

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let’s see if we can find some here: The tinnitus program is definitely worth mentioning. Those who are troubled by annoying ear noises will benefit from it. Pleasant, soft sounds are adjusted to gently surround the tinnitus. In the end, the tinnitus fades into the background noise and becomes hardly noticeable.

A real added value is the remote maintenance service. For a change in hearing aid settings, there’s no need to visit the local specialist anymore; you can directly contact the acoustician via the app. Through a cloud service, you can then upload the new data package to the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.

Tracking health data is a real advantage in modern hearing aids. However, this Philips model lacks the sensors for this service. In conjunction with a smartphone, the HearLink 5040 MNR T surprises us with a few nice lifestyle features. It is definitely worth familiarizing yourself thoroughly with the app and utilizing the offered assistance programs.
