The Audeo Marvel 30 R from Phonak is a small hearing aid that is worn behind the ear. By utilizing the storage of the small speaker in the ear canal, a very good sound transmission is possible. The Audeo Marvel 30 R is a hearing aid from a price range slightly above the average and is suitable for mild, moderate, and more severe hearing needs.

Hearing comfort

The comfort features determine how pleasant listening is experienced in everyday life. In this hearing aid, we find only the absolute essentials for hearing comfort. A classic noise suppression should reduce annoying background noises to a tolerable level. In the Audeo Marvel 30 R, we are not exactly spoiled but can manage with simple noise suppression. However, users of the Audeo Marvel 30 R must contend with the wind sweeping over the microphones. There is no wind noise reduction available here.

Unfortunately, we did not find a blast filter that responds to short, loud noises. We miss a good spatial sound, but the automatic focus can be quite helpful in situations with multiple people. The number of equalizer bands is very important for adjusting to hearing needs. The R only provides us with 8 and does not allow for many long-term fine-tuning options.

Strategies based on artificial intelligence are not yet in use in this hearing aid from Phonak.

Operation & connectivity

Almost everyone of us owns a smartphone, so it's natural to ask whether it can be connected to the new hearing aid. Let's take a look at the connectivity and usability of the Audeo Marvel 30 R. For those who want to adjust the volume quickly and easily, there is a button on the device. You can also select additional programs for special hearing situations through this. A remote control is available for the Audeo Marvel 30 R. It's quite practical, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume option as well as different hearing programs.

Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Phonak sadly cannot yet. It would be practical for those whose fingers are not as nimble or for those who simply like smart gadgets. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have tap control. This means you can just tap your ear briefly, and the device will switch. Here at Phonak, we don’t have that, as it would have required very specific sensors.

As expected, we find a suitable application for the smartphone. Here we have a powerful app that trusts its user and provides a comprehensive toolbox. The Audeo Marvel 30 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna and allows us to enjoy binaural phone calls. This even gives us an advantage over those with normal hearing. We find that great and are happy to give it points.

Simplicity & security

Usability is the next aspect we want to address. It's about practicality and the question of how easy and safe it is to navigate life with the hearing aid. The Audeo Marvel 30 R automatically accesses the most important hearing settings, making daily use easier. However, those who frequently experience changing acoustic environments should consider configuring the manual additional programs. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the hearing aid's volume in tiny steps until our target amplification is reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new auditory experiences.

The Audeo Marvel 30 R comes with a charger, as it has built-in batteries. This is modern, user-friendly, and we expect this from a contemporary hearing aid.

We also take a look at the robustness of the casing and discover in the datasheet the protection class IP 68. This means that dust cannot enter at all, and water only becomes dangerous after prolonged submersion. Touch protection is also included.

Lastly, we are interested in whether there are any additional goodies: We noticed the tinnitus option. Those who wish can have a special tinnitus program set up. This gently puts a soft noise in the ears when needed to distract from the annoying tinnitus. The sounds can be tailored to personal hearing preferences.

We find the remote maintenance service exciting, which can be utilized. If someone doesn’t have the opportunity to visit the audiologist, they can instead contact them through the app, briefly describe their hearing problem, and then receive a data package with a new hearing aid configuration. If it sounds good, they can load it into their hearing aids.

Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires special sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately do not have in the Audeo Marvel 30 R. It would have been nice to have a few lifestyle features, but those are not available in the Audeo Marvel 30 R. Other hearing aids can score points with voice translators or fall alarms, but here it remains with the usual range of functions.

In the overall view, this device ranks in the lower positions and provides us with little more than a solid basic equipment. Of course, you can understand speech with the device, just like with all hearing aids, but not much is done to alleviate listening effort. Our overall rating: 4.57.
