The Phonak Naida Lumity 30 SP in review

Mit der Einführung der neuen Chip-Technik Phonak Infinio Sphere gilt diese Gerätetechnik als überholt. Wir nehmen daher einen Abschlag in der Gesamtbewertung vor.

Our testers have taken another hearing aid at a reasonable price from the upper mid-range under the microscope. We present: The Phonak Naida Lumity 30 SP. Here we have an formerly widely used hearing aid that is worn behind the ear. It can be used by anyone who wants to compensate for a mild, moderate, and stronger hearing loss. Naida Lumity 30 SP is a normally sized hearing aid. Is it worth buying this model? We will reveal the details.

Hearing comfort

First, we evaluate the hearing comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied everyday life? Here, with this test device, a solid comfort programming by the audiologist is possible. As in all hearing aids, we also find the typical background noise suppression here. It is supposed to reduce monotonous, noisy ambient sounds to the point where they no longer stand out. With the Naida Lumity 30 SP, we have quite decent noise suppression. It might be too weak if you are often in traffic, but it is manageable in regular everyday situations.

With this hearing aid, we are impressed by how clearly the wind noise is suppressed and how stable the device functions even in stronger winds. Unfortunately, we did not find a burst filter that reacts to brief loud noises. We always take a close look at the number of equalizer bands. They are important to adjust the sound of a hearing aid as accurately as possible to the hearing curve. Furthermore, speech-noise management occurs within these bands as well. The Naida Lumity 30 SP has 12 of them. That is acceptable. We miss a good spatial sound, but the automatic focus can certainly be helpful in situations with multiple people.

Understanding speech in noisy environments is always a challenge. Phonak addresses this issue with the use of artificial intelligence. The result is brilliant and clear speech transmission, while the ambient sounds still come through realistically loud to the ear.

Operation & connectivity

Everyone has their own unique hearing needs. It is an advantage if one can customize their hearing aids beyond the automatic functions. In the test, we discovered the following access options: There is usually a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Naida Lumity 30 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can be disabled if desired. A remote control is available for the Naida Lumity 30 SP. It is quite practical, fits in the pocket, and offers a volume up-down option as well as various hearing programs.

Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Phonak cannot yet. This would be practical if the fingers are not so agile anymore or if one simply likes smart gadgets. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a quick tap of the finger without having to press a button. However, this feature has not yet been implemented here.

Hearing aid apps are becoming increasingly popular. With the Naida Lumity 30 SP, we are lucky: there is a suitable app. This app completely impressed us. Not only are there numerous ways to tailor the hearing aids to personal hearing preferences, but the app also offers a lot of lifestyle features. You no longer need headphones here, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds directly from the smartphone to the ears – provided the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

Simplicity & security

Our analysis also deals with the practicality of hearing aids in everyday use. This includes robustness, as well as special comfort features designed to make daily use as easy as possible. The Naida Lumity 30 SP can independently differentiate between quiet and loud environments, but the program automation offers little more than that. One can hardly do without manual adjustment options here. The device supports getting used to the new hearing experience with a fully automated acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I don't have to do anything other than regularly wear my hearing aids.

The Naida Lumity 30 SP is not rechargeable. It continues to get its power from disposable size 13 batteries, which need to be changed every few days.

We also take a look at the robustness of the casing and discover in the data sheet the protection class IP 68. This prevents dust from penetrating, and water only becomes dangerous after prolonged submersion. Protection against contact is also included.

Extras

We are almost at the end, but perhaps this device still has a few gifts in the form of extra features? Let's take a look: Phonak has integrated a noise generator that plays some soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can help distract from tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.

The ability for remote adjustment is something we really like. It's very helpful when you just want to change a small aspect of the hearing aid settings, but don't want to drive to the audiologist. Instead, you get in touch through the app, and the hearing professional sends back a customized data package in the same way.

Sensors in the hearing aid enable functions that offer real added value. This Phonak model contains such sensors and counts your steps throughout the day, for example. The data can then be viewed in the app. It's quite possible that additional tracking functions will be added through subsequent updates. Then there are a few lifestyle features that turn your hearing aid into a smart assistant. Connect with voice assistants like Siri, or discover what else is available in the app. While this may not have much to do with actual hearing, it can be extremely useful.
