Today we have a traditional hearing aid called Naida Lumity 50 SP on our test agenda. The manufacturer Phonak has designed it for mild to severe hearing loss and for wearing behind the ear. In terms of price, it is a model from a price tier slightly above the average. So, let's take a look:
Hearing comfort
In our test, we usually start with the analysis of comfort features. A comfortable sound is characterized by a mix of speech and background noise that is both realistic and as pleasant as possible. Various electronic tools take care of all the noises. With the Naida Lumity 50 SP, solid comfort programming is possible through the audiologist. One of the noise tools is noise suppression, which is supposed to dampen sounds like traffic noise, refrigerator humming, or the PC fan. Here, the noise suppression works quite well. While there are other models that reduce background noise significantly more, this one should be sufficient for everyday hearing.
Unfortunately, we did not find a burst filter that responds to short, loud sounds. Some hearing aids reach their limits when the wind sweeps over the microphones outside. That can get quite loud. However, Phonak has something to counter this, namely a strongly dampening, adjustable wind noise suppression. It works very well and helps all those who enjoy being outdoors. Spatial hearing has to be trained a bit with these hearing aids. While the movable microphones help, the position of these on top of the ear cup means that spatial sound is not quite like that of a normally hearing person. After a short adjustment period, however, spatial hearing works quite well. Those wanting a hearing aid with a lot of flexibility will be well served by the Naida Lumity 50 SP. It has 16 frequency bands and thus offers great adjustment options. The sound can be modified according to individual preferences, even after several years.
One component in the signal processing of the Naida Lumity 50 SP is artificial intelligence. The impact is positive, as many customers perceive conversations in noisy situations as significantly more relaxed.

Operation & connectivity
Since you probably don't have your audiologist by your side all the time, it's quite helpful to be able to make changes to your hearing aid yourself. There are various control options, and we will see which ones the Naida Lumity 50 SP offers. First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very practical because it is the simplest and fastest way to make changes. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If you prefer not to adjust anything directly at your ear, you can of course deactivate the button. A remote control is available for the Naida Lumity 50 SP. It’s quite handy, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume up-down option as well as different hearing programs.
We are always excited when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. But it's not currently available in the Naida Lumity 50 SP. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, tap control might be conceivable, which would activate a certain function by tapping your fingers on your ear. However, this option is not available in the Naida Lumity 50 SP.
Hearing aid apps are becoming increasingly popular. We are in luck with the Naida Lumity 50 SP: there is a suitable app. This app completely impressed us. Not only does it offer numerous options to customize the hearing aids to your personal hearing preference, but the app also includes plenty of lifestyle features. We particularly enjoyed the direct, wireless streaming. This means that calls from the smartphone can be transmitted to the hearing aids without any additional accessories. This turns the hearing aid into a perfect hands-free system or wireless headphones. Listening to music or watching and hearing videos is incredibly comfortable as well.

Here are our answers: Simplicity in a hearing aid means for us primarily that it adapts flexibly to changing hearing scenarios. The Naida Lumity 50 SP did not quite convince us in that regard. There is a situation recognition feature that differentiates between quieter and louder environments, and that works. However, those who are active in their lives might occasionally encounter limits with it. But that's not a big deal; one can rely on manual adjustment options. The integrated acclimatization manager can be of great help to you as you enter the world of hearing aids. Its task is to gradually increase the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until the target volume is reached. This way, you can relax and gradually get used to the new hearing impressions. The Naida Lumity 50 SP gets its energy from small disposable batteries that need to be changed every few days. While it's not rocket science, it should be considered especially for individuals with motor skill issues. A rechargeable battery would be significantly easier to handle.
We had an untroubled everyday life during our test thanks to the IP-68 certification. This means that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then removed the hearing aids with wet hands – no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only refers to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bathwater or saltwater.

We complete the test by checking if there are a few extras for you: Do you suffer from tinnitus? Then you might use the optional tinnitus program in the Naida Lumity 50 SP. Soft, gentle sounds are tailored to your hearing and engage all areas of the inner ear. It's nothing more than a distraction maneuver, and it works surprisingly well. The tinnitus fades into the general noise and no longer bothers you. It's a simple but effective tool and gets extra points from us.
We really like the remote adjustment feature. It's very helpful whenever you want to change just a small detail in the hearing aid settings but don't want to drive to the acoustician. Instead, you contact them via the app, and the hearing professional sends back a customized data package in the same way.
Your health is an important topic, so Phonak provides its customers with a great feature: health tracking. This logs your physical activity over a period of time, for example. Sensors capture this data and subsequently graphically display it in the associated app. Then, there are a few lifestyle functions that make your hearing aid a smart assistant. Connect with voice assistants like Siri, or discover what else is in the app. While it may not have much to do with actual hearing, it can be extremely useful.
