The Phonak Naida Lumity 90 SP in review

Das Lumity gilt seit der Einführung der Phonak Infinio Sphere als technisch überholt und erhält daher einen Abschlag in der Gesamtbewertung.

What exactly can the Naida Lumity 90 SP from the manufacturer Phonak do? First of all, it is a previously widely used hearing aid that sits behind the ear. It covers almost every hearing need. This model is a completely normal, medium-sized hearing aid of excellent quality. What can it achieve in everyday hearing? What comfort features does it offer? We took a closer look at this.

Hearing comfort

One of our favorite chapters is hearing comfort because it addresses one of the most important topics in conversations with our customers: background noise. Ideally, everyone would just like to hear speech and block out all other sounds. However, it is not that simple. Without sounds, our lives would sound very thin and empty. That’s why hearing aids are designed to keep noise in check but not to eliminate it completely. We were impressed by the excellent noise management of the Naida Lumity 90 SP. The mandatory noise suppression is supposed to react to anything that hums relatively evenly, such as heating or the kitchen hood. In this device, the manufacturer hasn’t held back and provides us with a multi-stage, effective noise reduction. Some hearing aids reach their limits when the wind sweeps across the microphones outside. That can get pretty loud. But Phonak has something to counter that, namely a highly dampening, adjustable wind noise suppression. It works very well and helps those who enjoy being outdoors. The impulse sound suppression is extremely useful. It captures all clattering, banging, and crackling noises and reliably dampens them. 3D hearing is very important for a natural impression. The device leaves nothing to be desired in this regard and has impressed us in this aspect. A brilliant listening experience is not least based on the number of frequency bands. The more bands there are, and the narrower the individual frequency channels, the better the hearing aid can be tailored to individual preferences. Here we get as many as 20 bands. This not only allows for a fantastic sound impression, but also enables very careful speech and noise suppression. Artificial intelligence is also used in the signal processing of the Naida Lumity 90 SP. This allows for a much more realistic analysis of the hearing environment, and especially the clarity in noisy surroundings is significantly better.

Operation & connectivity

Digital hearing aids have long evolved beyond the normal amplification function. Apps and other operating options significantly expand their functionality, which is why we also look at this important topic with the Naida Lumity 90 SP from Phonak. The simplest operating option is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This one has it too. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for a stepwise adjustment of the volume. Or do you need different special programs for your professional everyday life or your hobbies? These can also be activated through the button. If you wish to leave everything in automatic mode, you can simply ignore the button or even have it disabled. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you are speaking with is too quiet again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or for driving can also be activated with the remote control.

The modern form of operation via voice command is not yet found in the Naida Lumity 90 SP. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple fingertip touch in this Phonak model, as specific sensors in the casing would have been needed for that.

Apps for hearing aids are widely available today. The one for the Naida Lumity 90 SP has awakened our playful side. It’s fun to use this app, as it expands the functionality of the hearing aid with a few very useful tools. A streaming option would not be bad for our digital everyday life. The current device fulfills our wish and comes with a 2.4 GHz radio module. This allows phone calls and sounds to be sent directly from the smartphone to the hearing aids.

Simplicity & security

In the next step, we want to address the topic of user-friendliness. Is the Naida Lumity 90 SP easy to use? Is it weather-resistant? Do you have to do a lot to get accustomed to it? Here are our answers: With top-notch situational awareness, the Naida Lumity 90 SP has completely convinced us. The hearing aid adapts seamlessly to the acoustic environment and requires almost no intervention from us. Hearing feels completely normal. Some people find it difficult to adjust, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is an acclimatization manager that gradually introduces us to the necessary target amplification. The period can last from a few weeks to several months, and this is individually adjustable. The individual steps are so small that you don’t even notice that there has been a volume increase.

The SP from Naida Lumity 90 operates with disposable 13 batteries; it is not rechargeable. This has its pros and cons. We have provided assistance for the decision "Rechargeable or battery" here: Rechargeable hearing aids or batteries: 6 criteria for your decision.

The data sheet certifies the Phonak device with an IP protection class 68 certification. This makes it one of the most resilient hearing aids on the market. Dust doesn’t stand a chance, and water also doesn’t penetrate the casing unless submerged deeper than 1.5 m. However, be cautious. Shampoo, for example, alters the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. In everyday life, though, you can behave completely carefree.

Extras

Everyone loves a few extra features, so let's see if we can find something here: We really liked the optional tinnitus program. There are quite a few people who are occasionally or frequently troubled by a ringing or buzzing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the Naida Lumity 90 SP is actually nothing more than a sound generator. It aims to create wideband noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all hearing areas. The tinnitus is submerged in it and is no longer perceived as disruptive.

A real added value is provided by the remote maintenance service. To change the hearing aid settings, you no longer necessarily have to go to the specialist shop, but can directly contact the acoustician via the app. Through a cloud service, you can then load the new data package into the hearing aids. That's exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.

Do you sometimes use your smartphone to track your daily steps? This is now not only easier but also more accurate. The Naida Lumity 90 SP from Phonak has integrated sensors that make tracking very precise. Other health data can also be recorded - in our eyes, this is a real added value. This Phonak device also has a few small highlights. Depending on what your smartphone supports, you can set reminders for appointments, access Siri, or use other assistant systems. That definitely earns an extra point.
