This time we tested a slightly visible hearing aid from the high-end category. It is the Phonak Slim Lumity 70 R. It is worn behind the ear and is intended for mild, moderate, and even severe hearing loss. The direct orientation of the speaker into the ear canal is due to its design, which is why it delivers a nice, clear sound.
Hearing comfort
Hearing aids are meant not only to deliver speech to the ear but also to sound pleasant. So, let's first look at the comfort features. What types of noise can the hearing aid recognize? Are they dampened or transmitted unchanged? Is the hearing aid suitable for a lively everyday life? Here, with this test device, the manufacturer provides the customer with comprehensive noise management. As in every hearing aid, there is also the typical noise suppression here. It is designed to reduce uniform, noisy background sounds to the extent that they no longer dominate. The Slim Lumity 70 R has quite respectable noise suppression. Even when it gets louder, the listening experience remains pleasant.
The Slim Lumity 70 R is equipped with an incredibly good wind detection system. Nothing stands in the way of a walk by the sea. Extremely useful is the impulse sound suppression. It captures all clattering, banging, and crackling noises and reliably reduces them. Very important for good speech-to-noise differentiation is the number of frequency bands. With 20, this hearing aid is right at the forefront and offers excellent adjustment options. Spatial hearing is reliably supported by multifunctional microphones and is definitely practical.
By the way, you might perceive the sound of this Phonak device as clearer and more natural, especially in noisy environments. This is likely due to the implemented artificial intelligence. The hearing aid has already been trained with millions of real sounds, which leads to a significantly improved differentiation between speech and noise.

“Can I adjust something on my hearing aid myself?” “Is there perhaps an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when choosing a hearing aid, so let's take a look at the control and connection options. First, we found a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very sensible, as it is the easiest and quickest way to make adjustments. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If one prefers not to adjust anything directly on the ear, the button can of course be deactivated. We do appreciate small remote controls, and for this model, we found one. This allows for discreet small changes to the volume or sound.
The voice control was a lot of fun during our tests with the Slim Lumity 70 R. Most of us are already accustomed to talking to our watch or car, so this feature fits into a high-tech product on the ear. We were quite impressed by the tap control in the test. Just tap your ear briefly, and your Phonak hearing aid knows it needs to do something. We were already familiar with this sensor-controlled technology from wireless headphones, and it’s great that it’s now also available in hearing aids.
Apps for hearing aids are now widespread. This one for the Slim Lumity 70 R awakened our playful side. It’s fun to use this app as it expands the functionality of the hearing aid with a few very useful tools. Problems with phone calls on a smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are completely wirelessly transmitted to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission for longer phone calls as well as for listening to music while exercising. Everything worked simply and smoothly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is required.

Usability is the next aspect we want to address. This concerns everyday practicality and the question of how easy and safe it is to navigate life with the hearing aid. A well-functioning situational awareness already brings a lot of relaxation to the hearing experience. You don't have to constantly switch the device and can easily indulge in the automated adjustments. The built-in acclimatization manager can be of great help when starting out in the world of hearing aids. Its task is to quietly and gradually increase the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until the target volume is reached. This way, you can comfortably and gradually adjust to the new auditory impressions. The Slim Lumity 70 R is rechargeable and no longer requires batteries. This is not only environmentally friendly but also very convenient to handle, freeing me from the burden of constantly thinking about battery replacements.
We had a carefree everyday experience in our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then removed the hearing aids with wet hands—everything was no problem. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bathwater or saltwater.

Einen sehr guten Zusatznutzen erhält man durch das Angebot der Fernwartung. Über die App kann man mit seinem Hörakustiker Kontakt aufnehmen und sein Hörproblem schildern. Der kann die Einstellung entsprechend verändern und über die App in die Hörgeräte laden. Für Menschen mit wenig Zeit oder einem weiten Anfahrtsweg ist das ein toller Service.
Die eigene Gesundheit ist ein wichtiges Thema, deshalb stellt Phonak seinen Kunden ein tolles Feature zur Verfügung: Das Gesundheits-Tracking. Dabei wird z.B. die körperliche Aktivität über einen Zeitraum hinweg geloggt. Sensoren erfassen diese Daten und stellen sie anschließend in der zugehörigen App grafisch dar. In diesem Phonak-Gerät stecken noch ein paar kleine Highlights. Je nachdem, was Ihr Smartphone unterstützt, können Sie sich an Termine erinnern lassen, auf Siri zugreifen oder noch ganz andere Assistenzsysteme nutzen.
