We have tested a small hearing aid from the lower mid-range this time. It is the Phonak Virto Marvel 30 312. It is worn in the ear and is intended for mild to moderate hearing loss. The sound outlet close to the eardrum is due to its design, which is why it also delivers a nice, clear sound.

Hearing comfort

In the section on hearing comfort, we look at how a hearing aid deals with all the background noise. Comfortable noise management significantly contributes to a user's enjoyment of their hearing aids and regular use. With this Phonak device, we only find the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. The regular noise reduction aims to mitigate uniform, roaring background sounds. We had hoped for a bit more control depth in the Virto Marvel 30 312, but – well.

A filter for rattling, banging noises is not present here – unfortunately, that's a point against it. Unfortunately, this hearing aid still lacks wind noise reduction. Too bad. We miss good room acoustics, but the automatic focus can be quite helpful in situations with multiple people. With 8 frequency bands, we are not entirely satisfied with the 312, but that should suffice for uncomplicated hearing curves. The sound probably won't be very natural with this.

Signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence is not yet utilized here.

Operation & connectivity

Most hearing aids automatically adjust to their environment. However, it is sometimes very convenient to be able to make some changes oneself. After all, the hearing aid doesn't know how you are feeling at the moment. We looked at what control options the Virto Marvel 30 312 offers: There is a button directly on the hearing aid. This can be used to adjust the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. Of course, using it is optional. We really like the small remote controls, and we found one for this model. This allows for discreet adjustments to the volume or sound.

Voice commands are a relatively new way to operate hearing aids. However, this model does not have this option yet. That's not a big deal – the main thing is that you can hear well. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a quick tap of the finger, without having to press an extra button. This feature has not been implemented here yet.

For better usability, the manufacturer also provides us with an app for smartphones. The Phonak app for the Virto Marvel 30 312 is impressive: you can not only change the volume, but also really influence the sound and various noise parameters. You no longer need headphones here, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds from the smartphone directly to your ears – as long as the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

The test continues: How is the user-friendliness? Is it easy or complicated to handle the hearing aid? Typical hearing situations that everyone experiences in their environment are reliably recognized and adjusted through automatic controls. However, for more specific, recurring needs, you cannot avoid using the manual hearing programs. This device supports the adaptation to the new hearing experience with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely balanced. I just need to do nothing more than wear my hearing aids regularly.

We regret that the Virto Marvel 30 312 does not have a rechargeable battery, but is powered by hearing aid batteries of size 312. This is not a major issue, but one should remember to carry spare batteries. On the other hand, this hearing aid does not need to be charged daily; it lasts longer on a single battery.

For a secure feeling in everyday life, a solid dust and moisture protection is also important. However, there is no IP certification for this model. Presumably, this model is not really well-equipped against incoming dust or moisture. This is outdated and results in a deduction of points.

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find any here: A special tinnitus program is programmable in the Virto Marvel 30 312 upon request. This can generate stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and gladly give extra points.

Unfortunately, there is no option for remote adjustment. So, anyone who needs optimization and wants to change their hearing aid settings will have to visit an audiology professional.

A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors that can track personal health data, for example. However, the Virto Marvel 30 312 does not offer this. The functionality of the Virto Marvel 30 312 is limited to normal hearing, which is perfectly fine. Additional features like fall alerts or Siri integration provide some added value, but are not relevant for good hearing balance.
