We tested a small-sized hearing aid from the high-end segment this time. It is the Phonak Virto Marvel 70 312 NW O. It is worn in the ear and is designed for a mild to moderate hearing loss. The sound outlet close to the eardrum is due to its design, which also provides a nice, clear sound.
Hearing comfort
The comfort features determine how pleasant hearing is experienced in everyday life. With this hearing aid, we found only limited options for influencing comfort. A classic noise suppression aims to reduce annoying background noise to a bearable level. In the Virto Marvel 70 312 NW O, the surrounding noise is processed in such a way that relaxed listening is possible. Unfortunately, this hearing aid does not yet have wind noise suppression. That's a pity.
There is also a so-called impulse filter. It dampens short and loud noises a bit. This is a useful function, but we would have appreciated a bit more adjustability. The adjustable microphones help in recognizing certain directions and can also assist in noise cancellation, but the spatial sound was not very natural. A high number of frequency bands supports the separation of speech and noise. The Virto Marvel 70 312 NW O certainly ranks high with its 16 bands.
Strategies based on artificial intelligence are not yet applied in this hearing aid from Phonak.
The operating system that powers this hearing aid is AutoSense 3.0. There is a newer version 4.0, which is used in the hearing aids of the Paradise family.

How can one fully utilize the potential of hearing aids in daily life? We discovered what access options are available with the Virto Marvel 70 312 NW O. Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Virto Marvel 70 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be disabled if desired. Those who prefer not to touch their ear to adjust the volume will appreciate the optional remote control. This allows for convenient and discreet adjustments to the hearing aid.
In our tests, we found no option for voice control. This function isn't absolutely necessary but would have pleased us nonetheless. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a quick tap of the finger, without needing to press a button. However, this feature has not yet been implemented here.
Although smartphone apps are now offered for many hearing aids, Phonak unfortunately does not provide one for its Virto Marvel 70 312 NW O yet. If you were looking forward to wireless streaming, we regret to inform you that a wireless module has unfortunately not been integrated here.

Usability is the next aspect we want to address. This is about everyday practicality and the question of how easy and safe it is to live with the hearing aid. Ideally, the hearing aid should operate largely independently. The performance of the Virto Marvel 70 312 NW O is exceptionally good in this regard. It has a large number of typical hearing situations stored, which the device recognizes on its own and always generates the appropriate settings. We grant a big plus point for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It increases the starting volume in very small steps until my hearing goal is reached. This greatly facilitates the adjustment to the new sound.
We regret that the Virto Marvel 70 312 NW O does not have a battery but runs on hearing aid batteries of size 312. This is not a significant issue, but one should remember to carry spare batteries. On the other hand, this hearing aid does not need to be charged daily; it runs for a longer time on one battery.
A solid dust and moisture protection is also important for a secure everyday feeling. However, there is no IP certification for this model. Presumably, this model is not really well-equipped against penetrating dust or moisture. This is outdated and deserves a deduction.

Finally, let's take a quick look at whether there are any extras: Phonak has integrated a noise generator that plays soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a little more relaxation.
An online contact with the hearing care professional through the app would be very useful. This is quite common today and helps with minor adjustment issues. Unfortunately, Phonak does not offer this and thus does not earn any extra points.
There are no sensors in this Virto Marvel 70 variant, so popular health tracking cannot be offered. For example, daily steps are counted. As mentioned - this hearing aid does not have this feature on board. The hearing aid also lacks additional functions like special assistance systems, a fall alarm, or language translators. This is not a major issue, as it does not affect the important hearing functions.

In the overall view, this device ranks in the lower positions and delivers us hardly more than a solid basic equipment.
