The Phonak Virto Paradise 50 312 in review

Die neueste Technologie von Phonak setzt neue Maßstäbe, weshalb ältere Modelle als weniger aktuell gelten und in der Bewertung herabgestuft werden.

In the jungle of hearing aid variations, we want to provide you with some orientation and present another review. Today, we are discussing a Phonak model, specifically the Virto Paradise 50 312. The amplification power is sufficient for almost every hearing need, and just by being positioned fairly comfortably in the ear canal, it offers quite a reasonable sound. The Virto Paradise 50 312 is a small hearing aid from a good, mid-range quality level. It is worn in the ear.

Hearing comfort

What is most annoying to hearing aid users? Exactly, the background noise. That's why we first take a look at the comfort features included in the test device. With the Virto Paradise 50 312, solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional is possible. Normal noise suppression is definitely available. It is designed to dampen constant noises like street noise or the hum of the air conditioning. In our test device from Phonak, the manufacturer has not skimped and provides us with a multi-level, effective noise reduction.

A filter for clattering, popping noises is not present here – unfortunately, that’s a point against it. We have painfully missed a wind noise suppression. Those who are often outdoors might find the clearly audible wind noises quite disturbing. Anyone who wants a hearing aid with plenty of flexibility will be well served by the Virto Paradise 50 312. It has 16 frequency bands and thus offers great adjustment options. The sound can be modified according to individual preferences, even after several years. Spatial hearing in this model is almost true to nature. A sophisticated directional microphone technology allows for good directional hearing and creates a real 3D effect.

Strategies based on artificial intelligence have not yet been implemented in this hearing aid from Phonak.

Operation & connectivity

The operation options for hearing aids today are as simple or as complex as anyone would like. The basic functions run fully automatically, of course. We wanted to know how users can further access the Virto Paradise 50 312. Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Virto Paradise 50 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button, and it can also be deactivated if desired. We do enjoy the small remote controls, and we found one for this model. This allows for discreet adjustments to the volume or sound.

Voice commands are a fairly new way of operating hearing aids. However, in this model, we still don't have this option. That's not too bad - as long as you can hear well. Tap Control would also have been an interesting feature. With that, you could change the function with a quick tap on the ear. But that's not available in the Virto Paradise 50 312 yet.

Our favorite tool for hearing aids is the app, and we really like this one. In addition to the obligatory volume sliders, there are also options for sound adjustment. This significantly expands the potential of the Virto Paradise 50 312 and provides relief when listening becomes tiring. Problems with smartphone calls are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are transmitted completely wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones are thus rendered unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls and while listening to music during sports. Everything worked smoothly and effortlessly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is needed.

Simplicity & security

In the next step, we want to address the topic of user-friendliness. Is the Virto Paradise 50 312 easy to use? Is it weather-resistant? Do you have to do a lot to get by? Here are our answers: With the automatic situation detection, we expected a bit more support in everyday hearing situations. The situations "Quiet" and "Noise" are recognized, but most of the time the sound environment is somewhat more complex. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when someone has been hearing poorly for a long time and then wears a hearing aid for the first time, this is a tremendous relief. The volume does not need to be raised immediately to the maximum. One can start at a lower level and gradually and almost imperceptibly, the amplification approaches the target. The Virto Paradise 50 312 is not equipped with a battery, so it is not rechargeable. It is powered by a size 312 hearing aid battery. It needs to be replaced every few days. For a secure everyday feeling, solid dust and moisture protection is also important. However, there is no IP certification for this model. Presumably, this model is not really well equipped against intruding dust or moisture. This is outdated and scores points against it.

Rating Simplicity & security: 3,5

Extras

Sometimes it’s the little things that make a hearing aid perfect. That’s why we’ll quickly look at the extras that might be included: Noteworthy is the tinnitus program. Those plagued by bothersome ear noise will benefit from this. Pleasant, soft sounds are adjusted to gently surround the tinnitus. In the end, the tinnitus gets lost in the background noise and is no longer disruptive.

The ability for remote adjustment is something we find really good. It’s very helpful whenever you want to change just a small thing in the hearing aid settings but don't want to drive to the audiologist. Instead, you initiate contact through the app, and the hearing professional sends back a customized data package in the same way.

A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors that can track, for example, a few personal health data. However, the Virto Paradise 50 312 does not offer this. The device from Phonak focuses on essential hearing functions and does not provide extras like voice assistants or translation features. While that could have been fun, it isn’t necessary for a good listening experience.

Rating Extras: 2,5
