We tested a small hearing aid this time from the upper mid-range class. It is the Phonak Virto Paradise 50 312 NW O. It is worn in the ear and is designed for mild, moderate, and also severe hearing losses. The device owes its position in the front part of the ear canal to its design, which is why it also delivers a nice, clear sound.
Hearing comfort
In our test, we typically start with an analysis of the comfort features. A comfortable sound is characterized by a mix of speech and background noise that is realistic and as pleasant as possible. Various electronic tools take care of all the sounds. With the Virto Paradise 50 312 NW O, we found very few options for comfort adjustment. One of the noise tools is noise suppression, which is supposed to dampen sounds like traffic noise, refrigerator hum, or computer fans. Here, very effective noise suppression is implemented. It can be adjusted by the acoustician to individual sensitivities and provides exactly the degree of attenuation that the customer desires. This makes you well-equipped for demanding listening environments.
A so-called bang filter would have been nice; it would have made the clattering when emptying the dishwasher a bit more bearable. But we have to do without that in the Virto Paradise 50 312 NW O. Unfortunately, this hearing aid still lacks wind noise suppression. What a shame. Normally, those with normal hearing don’t really think about spatial hearing. With this hearing aid, we don’t have to think about it either. A sophisticated system of directional microphones and binaural wireless networking generates a 3D effect that is very close to natural hearing. With 16 frequency channels, the Virto Paradise 50 312 NW O clearly belongs to the better devices and allows for individual, well-sounding programming.
The signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence is not yet in use here.

Operation & connectivity
Since you probably don’t have your audiologist by your side all the time, it is quite helpful to be able to make adjustments to the hearing aid yourself. There are various operation options, and we will look at which of them the Virto Paradise 50 312 NW O has. Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Virto Paradise 50 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be disabled if desired. We really like small remote controls, and we found one for this model. This allows for discreet adjustments to the volume or sound.
Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Phonak unfortunately cannot yet. It would be convenient if your fingers are not as mobile anymore or if you simply like smart gadgets. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, a tap control could be conceivable, triggering a particular function by tapping your ear with your fingers. However, this option is not available in the Virto Paradise 50 312 NW O.
Although smartphone apps are now offered for many hearing aids, Phonak unfortunately does not provide one for its Virto Paradise 50 312 NW O yet. There is no connection option to other audio sources here. That's a pity, as a wireless streaming function would have offered real added value.

We continue with the test with a brief assessment of how easy everyday use will be. Is it complicated? Do I have to be particularly careful? Or do I not have to pay attention to anything else? Simplicity in hearing aids means for us primarily that it adapts flexibly to changing hearing scenarios. The Virto Paradise 50 312 NW O did not fully convince us in this regard. There is a situational recognition feature that distinguishes between quieter and louder environments. That works. However, those who are actively engaged in life may occasionally face limitations with it. But that's not so bad; manual adjustment options are available. We give a big plus point for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It gradually increases the starting volume in very small steps until my hearing target is reached. This greatly facilitates the adjustment to the new sound.
Unfortunately, the Virto Paradise 50 312 NW O is not equipped with a battery, so it requires regular size 312 batteries for operation.
For a safe everyday feeling, solid dust and moisture protection is also essential. However, there is no IP certification present. Presumably, this model is not very well equipped against ingressive dust or moisture. This is not up-to-date and results in point deduction.

We all like goodies, so let's take a final look at the extras that may be hidden in the hearing aid. A special tinnitus program can be programmed upon request in the Virto Paradise 50 312 NW O. This allows for the generation of stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and are happy to award extra points.
In these mobile times, a remote maintenance service via an app would be very helpful. This would allow you to conveniently create a new hearing aid program from home. Unfortunately, this service is not available for the Virto Paradise 50 312 NW O. Therefore, any changes still require a visit to the specialty store.
This variant of the Virto Paradise 50 does not have sensors, so the popular health tracking cannot be offered. For example, steps are counted throughout the day. As mentioned - this hearing aid does not have this function on board. The device from Phonak focuses on essential hearing functions and does not offer extras like voice assistants or translation functions.
