In the jungle of hearing aid variants, we would like to provide some orientation and present another test report. Today, we are talking about a ReSound model, specifically the Nexia 4 ITC. The amplification power is sufficient for moderate, stronger, and changing hearing losses, and just by being positioned quite comfortably in the front of the ear canal, it has a reasonably good sound. The Nexia 4 ITC is a discreet hearing aid from a price range slightly above the average. It is worn in the ear.

Hearing comfort

One of our favorite chapters is hearing comfort, as it revolves around one of the most important topics in conversations with our customers: background noise. Ideally, everyone would only like to hear speech and suppress all other sounds. However, it's not that simple. Without noise, our lives would sound very thin and empty. That's why hearing aids are designed to keep sounds in check as much as possible, but not to eliminate them.

In the Nexia 4 ITC, solid comfort programming by the audioprosthetist is possible. The mandatory noise suppression is supposed to respond to anything that hums fairly consistently, like heating systems or exhaust hoods. In the case of this device, we would classify the noise reduction as mediocre. It's sufficient if you don't live in a very noisy environment.

We are happy that the Nexia 4 ITC includes wind reduction. After all, the Nexia 4 ITC has a so-called bang filter. But is that always enough? Spatial hearing is a bit challenging at first, but once you understand how the microphones behave in certain situations, you can estimate directions and distances quite reliably. The 12 equalizer bands provide a solid foundation for programming the Nexia 4 ITC. As sound junkies, we would appreciated a few more, but for the typical situations we encounter in our daily lives, a reasonably good sound profile can be created from it.

Sometimes we experience hearing aids that successfully process data using artificial intelligence, but this device does not have that capability yet.

Operation & connectivity

Sometimes it's not so bad when you can adjust the volume of the hearing aid a little, for example, when the neighbor is loudly mowing the lawn or someone is speaking very softly to you. Many models therefore have special control functions. You can use them, but you don't have to. We looked into this with the Nexia 4 ITC: There is usually a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Nexia 4 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be disabled if desired. The small remote control, which is available as an option, is very practical. For us, it is one of the most convenient ways to turn the hearing aid louder or quieter or switch to another hearing program. No one notices it, and reaching for the ear is not necessary.

In the test, we did not find any voice control option. This function is not necessarily required, but we would have appreciated it nonetheless. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is a tapping control. You simply tap your fingers on your ear, which triggers a specific function. However, this option is not available in this ReSound device.

In our opinion, an app is better than a remote control, as everyone likely has a smartphone in their pocket. The app for the Nexia 4 ITC is really good; it has a lot of clever functions that make hearing in difficult situations much easier. It is quite complex, but you can quickly find your way around. You can also practice in demo mode. There are also a few surprising additional tools - enjoy exploring! One of the best features of the hearing aid is the direct streaming function. This makes the hearing aid a TrueWireless headphone, receiving phone calls and other sounds directly in the ear. A compatible smartphone that includes 2.4 GHz technology is required. The biggest advantage is that you can hear phone calls in both ears, not just one. Additionally, the sound can be tailored to personal preferences.

Simplicity & security

For the next chapter, we subjected the hearing aid to a small practical test. We wanted to know if it is easy to use and uncomplicated in everyday life. An automatic environmental adjustment would certainly be helpful in daily life, but unfortunately, it is not provided in the Nexia 4 ITC. Therefore, we must limit ourselves to the manual adjustment options. The integrated acclimatization manager can be of great help when starting in the world of hearing aids. Its task is to gradually increase the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until the target volume is reached. This way, you can calmly and gradually get used to the new sounds. We regret that the Nexia 4 ITC does not have a rechargeable battery but operates with size 312 hearing aid batteries. This is not really problematic, but one should remember to carry spare batteries. On the other hand, this hearing aid does not need to be charged daily; it runs longer on a single battery.

The data sheet certifies the ReSound device with an IP protection class rating of 68. Thus, it is one of the most resilient hearing aids on the market. Dust does not stand a chance, and water does not penetrate the housing as long as it is not submerged deeper than 1.5 meters. However, be cautious. Shampoo, for example, alters the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. In everyday life, though, you can behave entirely carefree.

Extras

We all like goodies, which is why we will take a last look at the extras that may be hidden in the hearing aid. We were particularly impressed by the optional tinnitus program. There are actually quite a few people who are occasionally or frequently plagued by a ringing or buzzing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the Nexia 4 ITC is essentially just a sound generator. It is designed to produce broad-band noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all hearing ranges. The tinnitus is drowned out in it and is no longer perceived as disturbing.

We really like the remote adjustment feature. It is especially helpful when you only want to change something minor in the hearing aid settings but do not want to make a special trip to the audiologist. Instead, you contact them via the app, and the hearing professional sends back a customized data package in the same way.

Many hearing aids still come with a few health features today. However, since the Nexia 4 ITC does not have any special sensors for this, we cannot present any particularities here. This ReSound hearing aid does not have any additional lifestyle options onboard. Elsewhere, there are voice assistants or reminder functions, but they are not necessary for good hearing. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.

With an overall grade of 2.92, this model holds its ground in the mid-range. It has quite a decent level of comfort features included, sufficient for typical everyday moments and providing a satisfying listening experience.
