This test report introduces you to the Nexia 5 CIC from the manufacturer ReSound. Brief model classification: The Nexia 5 CIC is a thin, small hearing aid that is worn in the ear. It can compensate for mild to severe hearing losses and is an appropriately priced hearing aid from the upper mid-range. A good sound is achieved through the natural, cleverly chosen fit directly in the ear canal.
Hearing comfort
Good speech understanding is a standard feature in modern hearing aids. Equally important is hearing comfort. Only when the ratio of speech transmission to the level of background noise is right will hearing be perceived as pleasant. That’s why we take a look at the comfort features: In the Nexia 5 CIC, solid comfort programming is possible by the hearing care professional. Normal environmental noises such as street noise, vacuum cleaner sounds, or fan noise should be dampened by a classic noise suppression system. In this ReSound hearing aid, noise suppression works rather average but is somewhat adjustable.
After all, the Nexia 5 CIC includes a so-called "pop filter." But is that always sufficient? Those who enjoy being outdoors will appreciate the wind noise suppression. It may not be very strong, but it is definitely useful. With the Nexia 5 CIC, there’s no need to reconstruct 3D hearing, as it remains fully intact. This is made possible by the deep fit in the ear canal. With 12 frequency bands, a fairly good sound can already be adjusted. A passionate musician might not be fully satisfied, but this number is completely sufficient for normal hearing and sound needs.
The signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence has not yet been implemented here.

Operation & connectivity
Digital hearing aids have long since evolved beyond just normal amplification. Apps and other control options greatly expand their functionality, which is why we are looking at this important topic with the Nexia 5 CIC from ReSound. The simplest control option is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This one has that too. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for stepwise adjustment of the volume. Or do you need different special programs for your work routine or hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. If you want to keep everything in automatic mode, you can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. We would have liked to have a remote control, but ReSound does not offer one for this model. So no points here.
Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from ReSound unfortunately cannot yet. It would be practical if the fingers are not so agile anymore or if one simply likes smart gadgets. Besides buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also feature tap control. This means you can just tap your ear briefly, and then the device switches. Here at ReSound, we don't have that, as it would have required specific sensors.
We searched in the app store in vain for an app for further adjustments, which we would have preferred differently. Unfortunately, wireless connectivity options are completely absent in this version. That is not very contemporary anymore, but it is probably due to the small size of the hearing aid.

Simplicity & security
How does one cope with the hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we will assess. Because only if such a device works easily and uncomplicated can one become accustomed to it. Hearing is greatly facilitated by good situational awareness. In the Nexia 5 CIC, we found a fairly solid automatic system that handles the most common hearing situations well. This might be sufficient if the acoustic conditions are not too challenging. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually adjust to the new hearing impressions.
The Nexia 5 CIC is not rechargeable. It is powered by size 10 hearing aid batteries. Disadvantage: The batteries are disposed of after use. Advantage: The daily charging of batteries is eliminated, and the hearing aid can operate continuously for several days on a single battery.
The datasheet confirms that the ReSound device has an IP protection class certification of 68. This makes it one of the most resistant hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water does not penetrate the housing, as long as it does not submerge deeper than 1.5 meters. However, be cautious. Shampoo, for example, alters the surface tension of the water. You should also avoid saltwater. In everyday life, though, you can behave completely carefree.

Extras
We complete the test by checking if there are a few extras for you: Worth mentioning is the tinnitus program. Those suffering from bothersome ear noises will benefit from it. Pleasant, soft sounds are adjusted to gently surround the tinnitus. In the end, the tinnitus blends into the background noise and is no longer disturbing at all.
A nice feature would be a remote maintenance service, allowing you to get help from the hearing professional even when you can't come into the store. But unfortunately, this is not available here, so there is no extra point for it.
If ReSound had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, individual health tracking could even be implemented. However, this is not the case here. These points are lost for the Nexia 5 CIC in the evaluation. The device from ReSound focuses on the essential hearing functions and does not offer extras like voice assistants or translation features. While that would have been fun, it is not necessary for a good listening experience.
