The ReSound Nexia 5 ITC in review

Diese Technik wurde im Februar 2025 von den ReSound Vivia abgelöst ist daher nicht mehr ganz aktuell . Aus diesem Grund nehmen eine Abwertung in der Gesamtnote vor.

We are once again in the testing lab, and this time we had a product from ReSound in our hands or rather on our ears. The full product name is Nexia 5 ITC, and it is categorized among devices of reasonable price in the upper mid-range. Due to its position in the front part of the ear canal, it has good acoustic properties. The Nexia 5 ITC is worn in the ear, and it is a small hearing aid suitable for nearly every hearing need.

Hearing comfort

What is most bothersome to most hearing aid users: Exactly, background noise. Therefore, we first look at which comfort features the test device contains. The Nexia 5 ITC allows for solid comfort programming by the audiologist. A normal noise reduction is definitely present. It is designed to dampen constant noises like street noise or the sound of the air conditioning. In our test device from ReSound, the noise reduction is solid. There are hearing aids that have a significantly more effective reduction, but this one should suffice for normal needs.

The Nexia 5 ITC also features impulse noise reduction. It reliably detects all short, clattering sounds, but the dampening is rather minimal. The Nexia 5 ITC is also equipped for windy outdoor situations. The signal processing can identify wind and lower it a bit. While the Nexia 5 ITC does not have many adjustable equalizer bands, the 12 should be sufficient for a good listening experience. Spatial hearing with the Nexia 5 ITC requires a bit of practice. However, the adaptive microphone system provides quite good support in social situations.

Strategies based on artificial intelligence are not yet implemented in this hearing aid from ReSound.

Operation & connectivity

Basically, hearing aids work fully automatically, and that's also the mode that most people prefer. However, sometimes it's quite useful to switch to another hearing program or simply adjust the volume in a challenging situation. Therefore, let's take a brief look at the control options of the Nexia 5 ITC. Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found that on the Nexia 5 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be deactivated if desired. A discreet way to adjust the hearing aid is through a remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person speaking is too quiet again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.

In the test, we did not find any option for voice control. This feature isn't necessarily required, but we would have appreciated it. Besides buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control feature. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and the device switches. However, we don't have that here at ReSound; it would have needed specific sensors.

Adjusting volume or special functions via an app is already widespread today, and the Nexia 5 ITC follows this path by providing us with an app. This app offers much more than just hearing aid functions and hints at what hearing aids could be used for in the future - besides good hearing. We really enjoyed direct, wireless streaming. This means that calls from the smartphone can be transmitted to the hearing aids without any additional accessories. This turns the hearing aid into the perfect hands-free system or wireless headphones. Listening to music or watching and hearing videos is incredibly comfortable.

Simplicity & security

No matter how great the hearing aid sounds: nothing is more unpleasant than a product that constantly presents us with hurdles in everyday life. That's why simplicity and safety are very important topics in our hearing aid tests: Hearing is greatly facilitated by good situational awareness. In the Nexia 5 ITC, we found a quite solid automatic system that handles the most common listening situations well. That might be sufficient if the acoustic conditions are not too challenging. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually adjust to the new hearing experiences.

The Nexia 5 ITC gets its power from small disposable batteries that need to be changed every few days. This is not rocket science, but it should be considered, especially in the case of motor difficulties. A rechargeable battery would be much easier to handle.

We had a carefree everyday experience during our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took the hearing aids out with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, clean water and not to foamy bathwater or saltwater.

Extras

We all love goodies, so let's take a final look at the extras that may be hidden in the hearing aid. Here, we noticed the tinnitus option. Those who wish can have a special tinnitus program set up. This gently plays soothing noise in the ears if needed, in order to distract from the annoying tinnitus. The sounds can be customized according to personal hearing preferences.

A very good added benefit comes from the remote maintenance service. Through the app, you can get in touch with your hearing care professional and describe your hearing problem. They can adjust the settings accordingly and upload them to the hearing aids via the app. For people with little time or a long commute, this is a fantastic service.

Many hearing aids today still come with some health functions. However, since the Nexia 5 ITC lacks specific sensors for that, we cannot present any special features here. This ReSound hearing aid does not have any additional lifestyle options. Elsewhere, there are voice assistants or reminder functions, but you don't need those for good hearing. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.
