Here we take a look at a hearing aid from the highest quality segment that is worn in the ear. It is called Nexia 9 ITC and is made by the manufacturer ReSound. It can be used by all people who have moderate, more severe, and changing hearing losses and who desire a fairly small hearing aid. Due to its quite comfortable position at the front of the ear canal, it has very good sound properties.
Hearing comfort
We all agree that speech understanding is the most important task of hearing aids. However, from our experience in the hearing aid retail business, we also know that hearing comfort is at least equally important. It’s all about processing background noise in such a way that it does not restrict speech understanding while still creating a realistic sound image. When testing the Nexia 9 ITC, the manufacturer provides the customer with comprehensive noise management. Let’s take a look at the individual features:
Of course, this ReSound device has noise suppression, as this has now become standard. Noise suppression means that uniform and rather monotonous sounds (e.g., air conditioning, vacuum cleaner ...) are dampened. A highly effective and adjustable noise reduction is integrated here. This keeps listening very comfortable even in challenging environments.
The suppression of short, loud sound events has convinced us; it is indeed powerful. The hearing comfort package also includes wind noise suppression. It works very reliably, and we wouldn’t want to do without it anymore. The Nexia 9 ITC is one of the good hearing aids, at least in terms of the number of frequency bands. With 17 bands, it is well-equipped for precise adaptation to personal sound preferences. 3D hearing is very important for a natural impression. The device leaves nothing to be desired in this regard and has impressed us in this aspect.
Signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence has not yet been implemented here.

Operation & connectivity
The majority of hearing aids automatically adjust to their surroundings. Still, it is sometimes very practical to be able to make changes oneself. After all, the hearing aid does not know how you are feeling at the moment. We looked into the control options offered by the Nexia 9 ITC: First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very sensible, as it is the simplest and quickest way to make adjustments. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If you prefer not to adjust anything directly at the ear, you can, of course, deactivate the button. If desired, there is a remote control for the hearing aid. This makes it easy to manage the volume. The handling is not only child’s play, but no one will also notice that you are currently adjusting your hearing aids.
The modern form of control via voice command is not yet available in the Nexia 9 ITC. Tap Control would have been an interesting feature as well, allowing you to change the function with a quick tap on the ear. However, this is not available in the Nexia 9 ITC yet.
Adjusting loudness or special functions via an app is already widespread today, and the Nexia 9 ITC also follows this trend and provides us with an app. This app offers much more than just hearing aid functions and gives us a glimpse of what hearing aids could be used for in the future—besides good hearing. One of the best features of the hearing aid is the direct streaming function. This turns the hearing aid into a TrueWireless headphone, receiving phone calls and other sounds directly in the ear. A compatible smartphone that includes the 2.4 GHz technology is a prerequisite. The biggest advantage is that you can hear phone calls not just in one ear but in both. Additionally, the sound can be tailored to personal needs.
Rating Operation & connectivity: 1,3

Simplicity & security
How does one cope with a hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we will assess. Only when such a device operates simply and easily can one become accustomed to it. The Nexia 9 ITC performs excellently in situation recognition. For those who desire a comprehensive and powerful full automation in their hearing aid and want to make as few adjustments as possible, this is a perfect fit. The adaptive algorithms untangle the individual sound events in the environment and present the soundscape clearly and precisely. Very important for simplicity is the support during the acclimatization process. Especially after having heard poorly for many years, it can sometimes be difficult to perceive everything at a natural volume. In our test device, there is an acclimatization manager that helps us through the adjustment phase with very small volume changes. After several weeks or months, we then reach the calculated amplification level.
The Nexia 9 ITC is not rechargeable. It operates with hearing aid batteries size 312. Disadvantage: The batteries are disposed of after use. Advantage: Daily recharging of batteries is eliminated; the hearing aid runs continuously for several days on a single battery.
We also take a look at the robustness of the housing and discover in the specifications the protection class IP 68. This means that dust cannot penetrate, and water only becomes dangerous after prolonged submersion. Touch protection is also included.
Rating Simplicity & security: 1,8
Extras
We all love goodies, so let's take a look at the extras that may be hidden in the hearing aid. ReSound has integrated a sound generator that plays soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.
A real added value is the remote service. For a change in the hearing aid settings, you no longer have to go to the specialist store; you can directly contact the acoustician through the app. You can then upload the new data package to the hearing aids via a cloud service. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.
If ReSound had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, it could even allow for personalized health tracking. However, that is not the case here. These points result in a loss of value for the Nexia 9 ITC. The device from ReSound focuses on the essential hearing functions and does not offer extras like voice assistants or translation functions. While that would have been fun, it is not necessary for a good listening experience.
Rating Extras: 2,5
