The Signia Intuis SP 4.1 HdO in review
Our testers have examined another hearing aid at a lower price level. We present: the Signia Intuis SP 4.1 BTE. Here we have a hearing aid in the classic sense, worn behind the ear. It can be used by anyone who wants to compensate for moderate to severe hearing loss. The Intuis SP 4.1 BTE is a highly manageable, compact hearing aid. Is it worth buying this model? We will reveal the details to you.
Hearing comfort
Hearing aids should not only bring speech to the ear but also sound pleasant. So let's first look at the comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? Are they dampened or transmitted unchanged? Is the hearing aid suitable for a lively everyday life? Here with this test device, we find only the absolute essentials regarding listening comfort. Like in any hearing aid, there is typical noise suppression included here. It is supposed to reduce uniform, noisy background sounds to the point that they no longer dominate. The Intuis SP 4.1 HdO includes only a very slight noise reduction.
When the wind sweeps over the microphones outside in nature, we wish for wind noise attenuation. However, that is missing here, and in some outdoor situations, it can significantly impair listening comfort. Even in cheaper hearing aids, we often find attenuation for impulsive, clattering noises today. But this clever tool is unfortunately not included here, which is a pity. An important point in our tests is the number of frequency bands. It plays a role when it comes to precisely programming the hearing aids. This number is also important for distinguishing between speech and sounds. Here we have 8 bands. There could certainly have been a few more, as that would allow for more fine-tuning adjustments. However, those who do not place much value on a brilliant sound experience could get along quite well with the Intuis SP 4.1 HdO. We have to forgo spatial hearing with the Intuis SP 4.1 HdO, but at least the microphones can be switched to a focus mode.
The signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence is not yet in use here.

Operation & connectivity
Would you like to be able to adjust something on your hearing aids yourself? We think it can be quite useful to have one or two control options. Let’s take a look at how this works with the Intuis SP 4.1 behind-the-ear model. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. With it, you can change the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. The use is of course optional. If desired, there is a remote control for the hearing aid. This allows you to effortlessly adjust the volume. The handling is not only child’s play, but no one will notice that you are currently adjusting your hearing aids.
For some time now, there has been a trend to adjust hearing aids louder or quieter using voice commands. The idea is really good, but Signia has not yet implemented this feature in this device. Don't worry, while this feature would be nice, it is not essential. Another option to control the hearing aids is a tapping control. This involves simply tapping your fingers on your ear, which in turn triggers a specific function. However, this option is not available in this Signia device.
In the app stores, there is a free app that can be used if desired. We tried it and were relatively quick to navigate through it. The range of features is rather modest. Nevertheless, it is a convenient and discreet way to temporarily adjust the Intuis SP 4.1 behind-the-ear model differently. The Intuis SP 4.1 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna and allows for bilateral phone calls. This even gives us an advantage over normally hearing people. We appreciate this and are happy to give points.

Simplicity & security
No matter how great the hearing aid sounds: nothing is more unpleasant than a product that constantly presents us with obstacles in everyday life. Therefore, simplicity and safety are very important topics in our hearing aid tests: When it comes to simplicity, it’s initially about easy, effortless hearing. This works quite well with the existing situational automation in the Intuis SP 4.1 Behind-the-ear (HdO). However, when the acoustic environment becomes a bit more varied, the automation reaches its limits, and we prefer to rely on manual adjustment options. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny increments until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new hearing impressions.
The Intuis SP 4.1 HdO is not equipped with a rechargeable battery, so it cannot be charged. It is powered by a hearing aid battery size 13, which needs to be replaced every few days.
The hearing aid has been classified in the IP protection class 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust ingress. Water also cannot easily damage the hearing aid. Thus, it is well-prepared for outdoor activities, where it can sometimes get wet and dirty. However, do not necessarily go bathing or swimming with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can change the composition and ultimately cause harm.

Extras
Before we come to the end, let's take a look at the extras: Manufacturers often implement a tinnitus program in their hearing aids to slightly mitigate the annoying ringing. However, Signia has opted out of this feature in this model. This is unfortunate because it would provide real added value for many people.
A clever tool is the integrated remote maintenance service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a scarce resource. Therefore, such a remote maintenance service is absolutely appropriate. Those who need a new programming of their hearing aids can easily contact the audiologist through the app and describe their hearing preferences. Via a cloud service, the professional can then send an individual adjustment as a data package to the app. From there, it is loaded onto the hearing aid and can be tested immediately. This definitely deserves extra points in our test.
There are no sensors in this Intuis SP 4.1 variant, so the popular health tracking cannot be offered. For example, steps are counted throughout the day. As mentioned - this hearing aid does not have this function onboard. The device from Signia focuses on essential hearing functions and does not offer extras like voice assistants or translation functions. While that could have been fun, it is not necessary for a good hearing experience.

Conclusion: Signia Intuis SP 4.1 HdO
In the overall result, this test device ranks in the lower positions and lacks some features. We give a rating of 4.25. For less demanding listeners, this is acceptable, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
