The Signia Intuis SP 4.2 HdO in review
Once again, we focus on a hearing aid from the company Signia. This time it is a conventional behind-the-ear hearing aid named Intuis SP 4.2 BTE. It is a well-designed, compact hearing aid, and it is priced at a rather affordable rate. It can be used for moderate to severe hearing losses. Let's see what the interior has to offer:
Hearing comfort
Our first test category is sound comfort. Actually, we could also say sound quality, as that is the main focus. Does the hearing aid sound very technical or beautifully natural? Are too many background noises amplified, or do they remain well in the background? In this device from Signia, we find only the bare essentials regarding sound comfort. The noise suppression is a very traditional feature; it filters out all chaotic, uniform sounds from the environment and reduces their volume. In the Intuis SP 4.2 BTE, the noise suppression delivers rather moderate performance. If you are not overly sensitive to noise, that might be sufficient.
In the Intuis SP 4.2 BTE, we do have wind reduction, but it doesn't really help outside. The impulse sound management is not really recommendable in this device. Short, loud noises still sound quite harsh. The 8 frequency channels are okay. However, it could be that the programming for individual hearing needs is not entirely precise, and one might have to make some compromises in sound quality. Unfortunately, spatial hearing is not very advanced. The hearing aids can focus forward, but that doesn't help when trying to discern from which direction a car is approaching or where someone is calling from.
Signia is not yet using artificial intelligence in this version.

Operation & connectivity
Every person has their own unique hearing needs. It is an advantage if one can customize their hearing aids beyond the automatic functions. In our test, we discovered the following access options: For those who want to adjust the volume quickly and easily, there is a button on the device. You can also select additional programs for special hearing situations through this. A remote control is available for the Intuis SP 4.2 BTE. It is quite handy, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume up-down option as well as various hearing programs.
For some time now, there has been a trend to adjust hearing aids louder or quieter using voice commands. The idea is really good, but Signia has not yet implemented this feature in this device. Don't worry, this feature would be nice, but it is not essential. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a quick touch of a finger, without the need to press a button. However, this feature is not yet implemented here.
If you like, you can download an app. This provides a convenient and discreet way to adjust the volume or hearing programs on the Intuis SP 4.2 BTE. Everything works quite well. You won’t need headphones here anymore, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds directly from the smartphone to your ears – provided the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

Simplicity & security
We continue the test with a brief assessment of how easy everyday use will be. Is it complicated? Do I need to be particularly careful? Or do I not need to pay any special attention? Typical listening situations that everyone experiences in their environment are reliably recognized and adjusted through automatic settings. However, for more specific, recurring needs, one cannot do without using the manual hearing programs. Some people find it difficult to adjust, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is a familiarization manager that gradually leads us to the required target amplification. The duration can range from a few weeks to several months, and this is individually adjustable. The individual steps are so small that you hardly notice that there has been a volume increase.
Intuis SP 4.2 BTE is not equipped with a rechargeable battery, so it is not rechargeable. It is powered by a hearing aid battery size 13. It needs to be replaced every few days.
We enjoyed an untroubled everyday life during our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took out the hearing aids with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bathwater or saltwater.

Extras
Sometimes there are additional functions in hearing aids that can be quite useful. Let's see how it is with this Signia device: Worth mentioning is the tinnitus program. All those who suffer from annoying ear noises will benefit from it. Pleasant, soft sounds are set up to gently surround the tinnitus. In the end, the tinnitus blends into the background noise and is no longer intrusive at all.
The option for remote adjustment is something we really like. It is very helpful whenever someone wants to change just a small detail in the hearing aid settings but doesn't want to drive to the hearing care professional. Instead, contact is made via the app, and the hearing professional sends a customized data package back the same way.
Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires special sensors in the hearing aid that we unfortunately do not have in the Intuis SP 4.2 HdO. The hearing aid does not include additional functions such as special assistance systems, a fall alarm, or language translators. This is not a big deal, as it does not affect the important hearing functions.

Conclusion: Signia Intuis SP 4.2 HdO
This test device ranks low overall and misses some features. We give it a score of 3.88. This is acceptable for listeners with modest demands, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
