The Starkey Edge AI 24 mRIC R in review
Here we take a look at a hearing aid of the highest quality level, designed to be worn behind the ear. It is called Edge AI 24 mRIC R and comes from the manufacturer Starkey. It can be used by anyone with a mild, moderate, or severe hearing loss who desires a hearing aid that is not overly conspicuous. Its direct speaker alignment in the ear canal provides excellent sound characteristics.
Hearing comfort
We all agree that speech comprehension is the most important task of hearing aids. From our experience in the audiology specialty store, we also know that hearing comfort is at least equally important. It is about processing background noise in such a way that it does not hinder speech comprehension while still creating a realistic sound image. When testing the Edge AI 24 mRIC R, we were impressed by the excellent noise management. Let’s take a look at the individual features:
Of course, this Starkey device has noise suppression, as it has become standard. Noise suppression means that uniform and rather monotonous sounds (e.g., air conditioning, vacuum cleaner ...) are dampened. The manufacturer has not been stingy here and provides us with a multi-stage, effective noise reduction.
Additionally, it contains a really strong impulse filter that reduces all short, sharp impulses as much as the customer desires. Wind noise is always an issue when the hearing aid microphones are somewhat exposed. However, with the Edge AI 24 mRIC R, this is not a problem at all, as it has intelligent, effective wind noise suppression. This not only mitigates audible turbulence but also maintains speech comprehension at the same time. With 24 channels, the number of frequency bands in the Edge AI 24 mRIC R is very high. This allows the hearing aid to be perfectly adjusted to each individual’s hearing and also offers good long-term tuning options. Normal-hearing individuals don’t usually think about spatial hearing. With this hearing aid, we don’t have to either. A sophisticated system of directional microphones and binaural wireless networking generates a 3D effect that comes very close to natural hearing.
Artificial intelligence is also used in the signal processing of the Edge AI 24 mRIC R. This leads to a much more realistic analysis of the hearing environment, and especially the clarity in noisy environments is noticeably improved.

Operation & connectivity
The operation options for hearing aids today are as simple or as complex as anyone would like. The basic functions operate fully automatically, of course. We wanted to know how users can additionally access the Edge AI 24 mRIC R. A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can make adjustments in several steps to increase or decrease the volume. Additional programs for specific hearing situations can also be activated with it. If you want to do without the button, you can simply have it disabled. We do like the small remote controls, and we found one for this model. This way, you can discreetly make small changes to the volume or sound.
Voice control is a contemporary way of operating hearing aids. Starkey has integrated this feature into its model, saving us the effort of feeling for a small button. Now it gets really modern: with touch control, the Starkey hearing aid can be easily switched. Sensors in the housing detect the touch when you briefly tap your ear with your fingers. And what exactly happens next is determined together with your audiologist. For example, you can activate voice control or switch to a special program.
Setting loudness or special functions through an app is already widespread today, and the Edge AI 24 mRIC R also follows this path and provides us with an app. This app offers much more than just hearing aid functions and gives us a hint of what hearing aids could be used for in the future - besides good hearing. One of the best features of the hearing aid is the direct streaming function. This turns the hearing aid into a TrueWireless headphone, receiving phone calls and other sounds directly in the ear. The prerequisite is a suitable smartphone that contains 2.4 GHz technology. The biggest advantage is that you hear phone calls not just in one ear but in both. Additionally, the sound can be tailored to personal needs.

Simplicity & security
An important factor for the acceptance of a hearing aid is its everyday usability. This includes, for example, automated features as well as robustness and user-friendliness. The Edge AI 24 mRIC R excels in everyday performance with its exceptionally well-functioning situational automation. Its finely tuned detection of the acoustic environment allows us to effortlessly navigate through different hearing environments without needing to manually adjust. This is exactly what we expect from a hearing aid. The device supports the adjustment to the new hearing experience with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I have to do nothing more than regularly wear my hearing aids.
An extremely useful development in recent years, in our opinion, is the integrated battery. We are used to recharging electronic devices in our daily lives. The Edge AI 24 mRIC R is also rechargeable, allowing us to avoid the hassle of battery changes.
We also take a look at the robustness of the casing and find the protection class IP 68 in the data sheet. This prevents dust from entering, and water only becomes a threat after prolonged submersion. Protection against contact is also included.

Extras
Sometimes it's the little things that make a hearing aid perfect. That's why we take a quick look at the extras that might be included: Starkey has integrated a sound generator that plays soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.
The ability for remote adjustment is something we find really great. It's particularly helpful when you want to change just a small setting on the hearing aid but don't want to make a special trip to the audiologist. Instead, you contact them via the app, and the hearing professional sends back an adjusted data package through the same channel.
For health-conscious individuals, there is a small feature in the Edge AI 24 mRIC R: health tracking. For instance, steps can be counted throughout the day, and you receive feedback on your level of physical activity. Sensors in the hearing aid track the individual data, which you can then read in the app. Additionally, there are some lifestyle functions that turn your hearing aid into a smart assistant. Connect with voice assistants like Siri or discover what else is available in the app. While this may not have much to do with actual hearing, it can be extremely useful.
