Points are deducted for the lack of impulse noise suppression. Normally, this dampens short, rattling sounds. However, those who choose this hearing aid should not let that bother them. Tools for spatial hearing are missing here, yet we still award full points. Spatial hearing remains intact because the hearing aid sits directly in the ear canal. And that’s where sound also reaches non-hearing aid users. This is a real advantage of this specific, compact design. 16 adjustable equalizer bands provide enough leeway to generate a reliable, precise listening experience.

Artificial intelligence is also used in the signal processing of the Evolv AI 1600 CIC. This allows for a much more realistic analysis of the listening environment, and especially the clarity in noisy surroundings is significantly improved.

Operation & connectivity

The majority of features are automatically activated by this Starkey model. However, it can be very useful to have the option to expand the functionalities a bit further. In our testing, we found out what options we have here. The simplest operating method is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This model has that as well. It can be programmed according to your preferences. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for gradual volume adjustments. Or do you need different special programs for your professional life or hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. Those who prefer to keep everything in automatic mode can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. We did not find a remote control. It's a pity because we actually quite like this discreet method of operation.

We always look forward to being surprised by a hearing aid with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see a voice control at this point. But currently, it is not available in the Evolv AI 1600 CIC. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, a tap control could be conceivable, which would mean triggering a specific function by tapping your fingers on your ear. However, this option is not available in the Evolv AI 1600 CIC.

We find the app for the Evolv AI 1600 CIC to be somewhat sparse. It’s best to check out the demo version before purchasing the hearing aid to see if it meets your needs. But we don’t want to complain; the app is definitely useful. There is no option for connecting to other audio sources. It's a pity, because a wireless streaming function would have offered real added value.

An important factor for the acceptance of a hearing aid is its practicality in everyday life. This includes, for example, automated functions as well as robustness and user-friendliness. The Evolv AI 1600 CIC features a comprehensive set of stored hearing situations. When a typical pattern is recognized, the hearing aid automatically activates the correct setting. We give a big plus for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It gradually increases the starting volume in very small steps until my hearing goal is achieved. This significantly eases the adjustment to the new sound.

The Evolv AI 1600 CIC relies on battery power instead of rechargeable batteries. Advantage: Very long runtime with a single battery. Unlike battery solutions, one only rarely has to worry about the power supply. Disadvantage: Waste is generated in the form of used batteries. This hearing aid uses a hearing aid battery size 10.

Hearing aids are exposed to external influences. However, this model does not have any special coating against moisture or dust. This is unusual nowadays and surprises us. Optimal care is therefore essential here.

Leise, sanfte Klänge werden auf Ihr Gehör abgestimmt und beschäftigten alle Bereiche im Innenohr. Das ist nichts weiter als ein Ablenkungsmanöver, und es funktioniert erstaunlich gut. Der Tinnitus verschwindet in dem allgemeinen Geräusch und nervt nicht weiter. Das ist ein einfaches, aber wirksames Tool und bekommt von uns Extrapunkte.

Wie sieht es denn aus mit einer Fernwartung? Solche Online-Services ersparen den Besuch im Fachgeschäft, weil man direkt über die App Kontakt um Akustik-Profi aufnehmen kann. Leider haben wir sowas für das Evolv AI 1600 CIC nicht gefunden. Schade, das wäre ein tolles Zusatztool gewesen.  

Sensoren gibt es in dieser Evolv AI 1600-Variante nicht, so dass auch das beliebte Gesundheits-Tracking nicht angeboten werden kann. Dabei werden z.B. die Schritte über den Tag gezählt. Wie gesagt - dieses Hörgerät hat diese Funktion nicht an Bord. Jetzt wäre es noch schön gewesen, ein paar Lifestyle-Funktionen zu haben, aber die gibt es im Evolv AI 1600 CIC nicht. Andere Hörgeräte können mit Sprachübersetzer oder Sturzalarm punkten, aber hier bleibt es beim üblichen Funktionsumfang.
