This time we tested a discreet hearing aid from a price range slightly above average. It is the Unitron DX Moxi 5 Move R. It is worn behind the ear and is intended for mild, moderate, and more severe hearing needs. The comfortable position of the speaker in the ear canal is thanks to its design, which is why it also delivers a beautiful, clear sound.

Hearing comfort

First, we looked at the comfort features. The better these are, the easier and more pleasant the listening experience becomes. This hearing aid allows for solid comfort programming by the audiologist. The traditional noise suppression ensures that consistent, unimportant sounds are slightly reduced. In the DX Moxi 5 Move R, ambient noise is processed so that relaxed listening is possible. Wind is also a factor that can limit listening comfort outdoors. However, the DX Moxi 5 Move R handles this confidently and activates wind noise suppression in such situations. By the way, this is adjustable in stages.

Impulse sounds occur very often in everyday life. There’s the dishwasher that needs to be unloaded or the set of keys that gets placed on the table. The DX Moxi 5 Move R features strong impulse sound management that makes these sounds bearable. Spatial hearing can be a bit challenging at first, but once you understand how the microphones behave in certain situations, you can fairly reliably assess directions and distances. The DX Moxi 5 Move R has 14 adjustable frequency bands and operates in the mid-range. A good audiologist can certainly extract reasonable sound from it.

Other hearing aids already use artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but this strategy is not yet present in the DX Moxi 5 Move R.

Operation & connectivity

The majority of hearing aids automatically adjust to their surroundings. Nevertheless, it is sometimes very practical to be able to make changes yourself. After all, the hearing aid does not know how you are feeling at the moment. We examined the control options offered by the DX Moxi 5 Move R: The simplest control option is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This one has that as well. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for a gradual adjustment of the volume. Or do you need different special programs for your professional life or hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. If you wish to keep everything in automatic mode, you can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. If desired, there is a remote control for the hearing aid. This allows for effortless volume adjustment. The handling is not only child’s play, but no one will notice that you are currently adjusting your hearing aids.

In the test, we did not find any option for voice control. This function is not necessarily needed, but we would have appreciated it nonetheless. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, a tap control could be possible, which would trigger a specific function by tapping your fingers on your ear. However, this option is not available in the DX Moxi 5 Move R.

As is common today, we also find a smartphone app for the DX Moxi 5 Move R. This app contains solid basic functions and adds a few goodies on top. We had a lot of fun with the direct, wireless streaming. This means that calls from the smartphone can be transmitted to the hearing aids without any additional accessories. This turns the hearing aid into the perfect hands-free device or wireless headphones. Listening to music or watching and hearing videos is incredibly comfortable.

Simplicity & security

Moving on with the test: How is the user-friendliness? Is it easy or complicated to handle the hearing aid? When it comes to simplicity, it is primarily about easy, effortless hearing. This works quite well with the existing situational automation in the DX Moxi 5 Move R. However, when the acoustic environment becomes a bit more varied, the automation reaches its limits, and we prefer to revert to manual adjustment options. We give a big plus point for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It gradually increases the starting volume in very small steps until my hearing goal is reached. This significantly eases the adjustment to the new sound.

The DX Moxi 5 Move R is rechargeable and does not require any hearing aid batteries anymore. This is environmentally friendly, as there are no old batteries to dispose of. At the same time, it is also extremely convenient, as no spare batteries need to be carried. The hearing aids simply go into the charging station in the evening and are ready for use the next morning.

With an IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it can withstand prolonged immersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

Über ein paar Extra-Funktionen freut sich jeder, also schauen wir mal, ob wir hier fündig werden: Ein spezielles Tinnitusprogramm ist im DX Moxi 5 Move R auf Wunsch programmierbar. Damit können stimulierende, angenehme Geräusche generiert werden, die vom Tinnitus ablenken, wenn er mal wieder besonders stark ist. Das finden wir sehr nützlich und vergeben gerne Extrapunkte.

Einen sehr guten Zusatznutzen erhält man durch das Angebot der Fernwartung. Über die App kann man mit seinem Hörakustiker Kontakt aufnehmen und sein Hörproblem schildern. Der kann die Einstellung entsprechend verändern und über die App in die Hörgeräte laden. Für Menschen mit wenig Zeit oder einem weiten Anfahrtsweg ist das ein toller Service. 

Viele Hörgeräte haben heute noch ein paar Gesundheits-Funktionen dabei. Da das DX Moxi 5 Move R aber keine speziellen Sensoren dafür hat, können wir hier keine Besonderheiten vorstellen. Auf zusätzliche Funktionen wie spezielle Assistenzsysteme, einen Sturzalarm oder Sprachübersetzer verzichtet das Hörgerät. Das ist nicht weiter schlimm, denn es hat keinen Einfluss auf die wichtigen Hörfunktionen.
