We tested a small hearing aid this time from a moderately priced category. It is the Unitron V Moxi 3 RT. It is worn behind the ear and is designed for mild, moderate, and also severe hearing needs. The cleverly chosen placement of the speaker in the ear canal is thanks to its design, which also delivers a nice, clear sound.

Hearing comfort

What is bothersome for most hearing aid wearers? Exactly, background noises. That's why we first look at the comfort features of the test device. The V Moxi 3 RT allows for solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional. A normal noise reduction is definitely present. It is meant to dampen constant sounds like street noise or the hum of an air conditioner. In our test device from Unitron, a stronger noise reduction would be desirable, but that is reserved for higher-end hearing aids.

An impulse sound suppression is a very important element in the comfort features of a hearing aid. It dampens popping and clattering sounds. In the V Moxi 3 RT, this suppression occurs in multiple stages. That definitely earns some extra points. Wind noises are always a topic when the hearing aid microphones are slightly exposed. With the V Moxi 3 RT, this is not a problem at all, as it has intelligent and effective wind noise suppression. This not only mitigates the audible turbulence but also preserves speech understanding. A few more frequency channels would be desirable, but the existing 12 channels already work quite well. The device can recognize whether the microphones are transmitting everything or should be directed forward. This can help in conversation situations, but it does not replace true spatial hearing.

Speech in a noisy environment is always a challenge. Unitron addresses this issue by using artificial intelligence. The result is brilliant and clear speech transmission, while ambient noises still come through realistically loud to the ear.

A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can adjust the volume up or down in several steps. Additional programs for special listening situations can also be activated with it. If you prefer to do without the button, you can simply have it disabled. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits in any pocket. When the person you're talking to speaks too softly again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.

This device from Unitron can be controlled by voice command. This very modern way of operating hearing aids is truly convenient and is especially quick. We are really impressed by the Tap control. A quick tap on the ear with your fingers, and the hearing aid switches to another mode. Here, Unitron is a good step ahead of others with its model. In our opinion, the Tap control is not only up-to-date but also extremely convenient.

The app is definitely very useful. Anyone with a smartphone should download it. Even though the app is not one of our favorites, it is still a useful addition to the V Moxi 3 RT. We really enjoyed the direct, wireless streaming. This means that calls from the smartphone can be transmitted to the hearing aids without any additional accessories. This turns the hearing aid into the perfect hands-free system or wireless headphones. Listening to music or watching and hearing videos is also incredibly comfortable.

An important factor for the acceptance of a hearing aid is its everyday usability. This includes, for example, automated functions as well as robustness and user-friendliness. The automatic situation recognition is supposed to make listening easier. However, the V Moxi 3 RT does not handle changing or difficult acoustic environments very well, as a few adaptive algorithms are missing. Additionally, it is advisable to have a few extra hearing programs set up for this device. Very important in terms of simplicity is the support during adaptation. Especially after having heard poorly for years, it can sometimes be difficult to perceive everything at a natural volume. Our test device has an acclimatization manager that helps us through the adjustment phase with very small volume adjustments. After a few weeks or months, we reach the calculated amplification level.

For easy handling in everyday life, power supply is definitely also a consideration. The V Moxi 3 RT has a built-in battery and is rechargeable. Since a single charge lasts for the entire day, we do not have to worry about the battery dying in the middle of a conversation.

The hearing aid has been classified in the IP protection class 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against the ingress of dust. Water is also not likely to damage the hearing aid. Thus, it is well-equipped for outdoor activities, where it may get wet and dirty. However, do not go swimming or bathing with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can change the composition and ultimately cause damage.

At the end of our test report, there is still a bit of space for the extra features: A special tinnitus program can be programmed in the V Moxi 3 RT upon request. This allows for the generation of stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from tinnitus when it is particularly intense. We find this very useful and are happy to award extra points.

A real added value is the remote maintenance service. For a change in hearing aid settings, you no longer have to go to the specialized store; instead, you can directly contact the audiologist via the app. Through a cloud service, you can then upload the new data package to the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.

If Unitron had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, it could even offer individual health tracking. However, this is not the case here. These points are lost in the rating for the V Moxi 3 RT. The hearing aid also forgoes additional functions such as special assistance systems, a fall alarm, or language translators. This is not a big deal, as it does not affect the important hearing functions.
