The Unitron V Stride 3 UP in review

Today we have a hearing aid, reminiscent of older models, called V Stride 3 UP on our test agenda. The manufacturer Unitron has designed it for moderate to severe hearing loss and for wearing behind the ear. In terms of price, it is a model from the lower mid-range. So, let's take a look:

Hearing comfort

At least as important as speech understanding is auditory comfort. After all, our environment should sound as realistic and pleasant as possible. So let’s take a look at noise management: In this model that Unitron offers here, solid comfort programming is possible through the audiologist. Of course, noise suppression is integrated to help dampen exhausting background noises. With the V Stride 3 UP, we shouldn't expect too much. Speech and sounds are quite close together here. But in acoustically simple situations, this should be sufficient. Unitron is likely to impress all outdoor enthusiasts with this device, as wind is not only pleasantly dampened, but speech understanding should also continue to function without issues.

Crackling metallic sounds have no chance in this hearing aid; they are significantly reduced with a multi-stage tool. We miss a good room sound, but the automatic focus can be quite helpful in situations with multiple people. We always take a close look at the number of equalizer bands. They are important to adapt the sound of a hearing aid as accurately as possible to the hearing curve. Additionally, the speech noise management also occurs within these bands. The V Stride 3 UP has 12 of them. That’s okay.

The signal processing of the V Stride 3 UP also employs artificial intelligence. This allows for a much more realistic analysis of the hearing environment, and above all, clarity in noisy surroundings is significantly better.

Operation & connectivity

The operation options for hearing aids are today as simple or as complex as one prefers. The basic functions operate automatically. We wanted to know how a user can further access the V Stride 3 UP. First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very practical, as it is the simplest and quickest way to make changes. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If one prefers not to adjust anything directly on the ear, the button can, of course, be deactivated. If desired, there is a remote control for the hearing aid. This allows for effortless volume adjustment. The handling is not only child’s play, but no one will notice that you are currently adjusting your hearing aids.

Voice commands are a fairly new type of hearing aid operation. However, we do not have this option in this model yet. That’s not a big deal - the main thing is that you can hear well. Tap Control would also have been an interesting feature. With this, you would be able to change the function with a quick tap on the ear. But that’s not available here in the V Stride 3 UP yet.

Manual operation includes an app. This allows for discreet access to the hearing aid. In addition to volume control, one can also adjust hearing programs and a few other functions. Headphones are no longer needed here, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds directly from the smartphone to the ears – provided the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

Simplicity & security

How does one manage with the hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we assess. Because only if such a device works easily and straightforwardly can one become accustomed to it. When it comes to simplicity in hearing, we make no compromises. We expect the hearing aid to function fully automatically in the background and not require us to constantly press buttons. We are a bit disappointed with the V Stride 3 UP. Only the basic situations are automatically recognized. This means that we can't really manage without manual control options. Some people find it hard to adjust, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is a acclimatization manager that gradually leads us to the desired target amplification. The duration can take a few weeks or even several months, and this is individually adjustable. The individual steps are so small that one hardly notices that there has been an increase in volume.

The V Stride 3 UP is not rechargeable. It continues to get its power from disposable batteries size 675, which need to be changed every few days.

With IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse conditions. Dust cannot penetrate, it can endure longer immersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

Extras

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let’s see if we can find some here: A special tinnitus program can be programmed on request in the V Stride 3 UP. This allows for stimulating, pleasant sounds to be generated that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and are happy to award extra points.

Unitron keeps up with the times and offers a forward-looking feature with the remote adjustment service. Busy people with little time can contact their audiologist online and have their hearing aids reprogrammed. Hearing aid users who have a longer commute to the specialist shop also benefit from this special service.

Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Unitron model lacks the necessary sensors for this service. It would have been nice to have a few lifestyle functions, but those are not available in the V Stride 3 UP. Other hearing aids can score points with a voice translator or fall alert, but here it remains within the usual scope of functions.
