Widex: a pair of behind-the-ear devices
4/5 Rating ****

The Widex Allure 220 RIC in review

Here we take a look at a hearing aid from the premium price range that is worn behind the ear. It is called Allure 220 RIC and is made by the manufacturer Widex. It can be used by anyone with mild, moderate, or even severe hearing loss who desires a small hearing aid in a very slim design. Due to the speaker arrangement discreetly in the ear towards the eardrum, it has very good sound properties.

Pure sound in new dimensions - with the Widex Allure, entry into hearing aid provision is noticeably facilitated, especially for mild and moderate hearing loss.

Hearing comfort

In the Hearing Comfort section, we look at how a hearing aid handles all the background noise. Comfortable noise management contributes significantly to a user liking their hearing aids and wearing them regularly. With this Widex device, solid comfort programming by the audiologist is possible. The regular noise suppression aims to mitigate uniform, hissing background noises. In the Allure 220 RIC, you can certainly be satisfied with the level of noise suppression. It can be adjusted in stages and ensures that the sounds do not dominate.

Sudden noises are likely dampened, but we didn't really notice the effect. A slightly stronger wind reduction would be desirable, but the one in the Allure 220 RIC is manageable. We cannot produce true 3D spatial sound with the current test device. Especially outdoors, you should look around more often to locate individual sound sources. However, focusing on a particular speaker works quite well thanks to the integrated directional microphones. Let's briefly look at the equalizer: With 10 bands, it is not particularly flexible. With a few more channels, we would certainly have achieved a nicer, more natural sound experience. But at least, we can adjust the sound reasonably well to our hearing preferences.

For challenging hearing situations, Widex has a special strategy: In the app, you will find an assistance feature that allows for spontaneous and precise changes based on artificial intelligence. This is a kind of intelligent immediate support in case you are not near your audiologist.

For those with mild to moderate hearing loss who value natural sound, Widex PureSound offers a reliable solution. The innovative technology reduces disturbances caused by time delays – for better understanding and more listening comfort from the very beginning.

Operation & connectivity

Every person has their own unique hearing needs. It is advantageous to be able to customize hearing aids beyond the automatic functions. In our test, we discovered the following access options: There is a button directly on the hearing aid. This allows you to adjust the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. The use is, of course, optional. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is through a remote control. It fits in any pocket. If someone is speaking too quietly once again, one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.

Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Widex unfortunately cannot yet. It would be practical when fingers are not as nimble anymore or when one simply likes smart gadgets. More and more functionalities are being integrated into hearing aids that are already known from other areas. Here in the Allure 220 RIC, it is the tap control. It is sufficient to briefly tap the ear shell with your fingers or the flat of your hand, and a command is triggered. This could be, for example, the start of a transmission from the TV adapter. Your audiologist will help you find the appropriate function.

An app is the perfect companion for hearing aids. The app for the Allure 220 RIC is absolutely impressive. It is a meaningful addition, as it can significantly simplify life in critical hearing situations with its various settings. Problems with smartphone calls are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are completely transmitted wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls as well as while listening to music during sports. Everything worked smoothly and effortlessly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is needed.

With the AI Quick Assistant of the app, you can adjust the sound of your hearing aids to suit your current situation with just a few tips. Simply select the activity that best fits your environment – e.g., watching TV, conversations, or being outdoors – and the sound settings will be automatically optimized.

Simplicity & security

We continue our test and explore how easy this hearing aid is to handle. After all, it should simplify the everyday life of hearing aid users, not complicate it further. When it comes to simplicity, it initially revolves around easy, effortless hearing. This works quite well with the existing situational automation in the Allure 220 RIC. However, when the acoustic environment is somewhat more varied, the automation reaches its limits, and we prefer to resort to manual adjustment options. The adjustment to the new hearing experience is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is fully compensated. I don’t have to do anything other than wear my hearing aids regularly.

The Allure 220 RIC has a rechargeable battery. We find this very good because rechargeable hearing aids are absolutely up-to-date. You don’t have to have batteries lying around everywhere and you also don’t have to change the battery in the middle of a concert. The hearing aid is simply placed in the charging station overnight and has enough energy for the following day.

We had a carefree everyday life during our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took the hearing aids out with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bathwater or seawater.

The integrated telecoil in Widex hearing aids enables the reception of audio signals via induction loops – for example, in churches, theaters, or on the phone. This function works independently of the smartphone, thus supporting barrier-free hearing. Even if it is not currently activated, it can be easily used later with the press of a button on the hearing aid.

Widex: Battery charging station with hearing aids

Widex Allure 220 RIC: This charging station is expected to be available from June/July 2025. With its 3-in-1 function, it not only charges your hearing aids but also provides intensive drying and antibacterial UV treatment through an integrated care cycle. Additionally, temperature stabilization ensures optimal battery performance. Until this charging station is available, you can use the open desktop charger.

Extras

Before we reach the end, let's take a look at the extras: One noteworthy feature is the tinnitus program. Those plagued by bothersome ear noises will benefit from it. Pleasant, soft sounds are adjusted to gently surround the tinnitus. In the end, the tinnitus fades into the background noise and becomes hardly noticeable at all.

A significant additional benefit is offered through the remote maintenance feature. Via the app, users can contact their hearing care professional and describe their hearing issue. They can adjust the settings accordingly and upload them to the hearing aids through the app. This is a great service for people with little time or long travel distances.

Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Widex model lacks the sensors for this service. This Widex hearing aid does not come with any additional lifestyle options. Other brands offer voice assistants or reminder functions, but you don't need those for good hearing. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.
