This test report is about the Allure 440 RIC. It was developed by Widex and addresses mild, moderate, and also severe hearing needs. This variant is worn behind the ear. The Allure 440 RIC is a slim, small hearing aid of excellent quality. We achieve clear sound transmission thanks to the comfortable position of the speaker in the ear canal.

Although the manufacturer makes AI available only in the app for the new Widex Allure, it achieves results that can easily compete with those of its competitors through a sophisticated processing strategy.

Hearing comfort

In the first chapter, we evaluate the quality of noise management. We call it hearing comfort, as these features determine how pleasant the wearer of the hearing aid perceives the sound of their devices. However, noises can be of various natures and require different tools for suppression. We were thrilled with the excellent noise management of the Allure 440 RIC. First, we look at noise suppression. Its purpose is to tame everyday sounds like the noise from ventilation or refrigerators. In this Widex model, background noises can be adjusted in multiple levels, allowing the wearer to decide how much attenuation is truly comfortable.

Once you've experienced impulse sound suppression in a hearing aid, you don't want to give it up. The Allure 440 RIC has such a feature and can handle all short and intense sound events effortlessly. This includes things like dishes clattering in the kitchen or footfalls on a hard floor. Wind can significantly reduce hearing comfort outdoors when it brushes over the microphones. But the Allure 440 RIC has an efficient wind noise suppression feature integrated. It works really well and will delight people who enjoy spending time outside. It can be adjusted in several stages to meet personal needs. The Allure 440 RIC is one of the good hearing aids, at least regarding the number of frequency bands. With 15 bands, it is well-equipped for precise adjustment to personal sound preferences. Normally, one doesn't really think about spatial hearing. With this hearing aid, we don't have to either. A sophisticated system of directional microphones and binaural wireless networking creates a 3D effect that closely resembles natural hearing.

Despite modern comfort features, tricky listening situations can still occur. For this, the Allure 440 RIC has an assistance mode in its app. Behind it is artificial intelligence that analyzes the current environment and calculates a noticeably better setting.

Operation & connectivity

Sometimes it's not so bad to be able to adjust the volume of the hearing aid a little, for example, when the neighbor is loudly mowing the lawn or someone is speaking very softly to you. Many models therefore have special control functions. You can use them, but you don't have to. We looked at this in the Allure 440 RIC: First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very useful as it is the simplest and quickest way to make a change. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If you prefer not to adjust anything directly on the ear, you can of course deactivate the button. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you're talking to is once again speaking too softly, one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or for driving can also be activated with the remote control.

As expected, we find a suitable application for the smartphone. Here we have a powerful app that trusts its user and provides a comprehensive toolbox. The Allure 440 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna and allows us to enjoy binaural phone calls. This even gives us an advantage over normal hearing individuals. We think that's great and are happy to give points.

The integrated AI Sound Assistant in the app helps you easily tailor your hearing aid to your personal hearing preferences and everyday situations – thanks to artificial intelligence and direct hearing comparison. This way, a customized hearing program is created step by step that fits you perfectly.

Widex Allure 440 RIC: iPhone or Android - there's only a small difference. You can only use the hands-free function with the iOS operating system. With the Android device, while you can hear your conversation partner through the hearing aids, you still have to use the phone's microphone to be understood.

Simplicity & security

Let's continue with the test: How is the user-friendliness? Is it easy or complicated to handle the hearing aid? The automatic situation feature of the Allure 440 RIC includes nearly everything one might experience in everyday life. It provides me with the perfect setting at all times without me having to do anything actively. Particularly during variable phases, this is extremely convenient and makes me almost forget that I have the hearing aid in my ear. Some people have difficulty adjusting, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is a familiarization manager that gradually leads us to the required target amplification. The period can last from a few weeks to several months, and this is individually adjustable. The individual steps are so small that one barely notices that there has just been an increase in volume.

The Allure 440 RIC contains a battery. We find this very good because rechargeable hearing aids are absolutely contemporary. You don't have to have batteries lying around everywhere, nor do you have to change the battery in the middle of a concert. The hearing aid simply gets placed in the charging station overnight and then has enough energy for the following day.

The hearing aid has been classified in the IP protection class 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against the penetration of dust. Water also cannot easily harm the hearing aid. Therefore, it is well equipped for outdoor activities, where it can sometimes get wet and dirty. However, do not necessarily go bathing or swimming with the hearing aids. Bath additives or even the salt content in seawater can change the composition and may ultimately cause damage.

Widex has already integrated a telephone coil into its devices, making barrier-free hearing easier in many everyday situations – controllable directly with a push of a button, without a smartphone. Although the function is currently not activated, it will eventually provide easy access to induction loop systems in public facilities and on the phone.

Widex Allure 440 RIC: This 3-in-1 performance package is expected to be available only from June/July 2025. It charges, dries, and disinfects your hearing aids simultaneously. Until it is available, you can use a simple charging station.

Extras

At the end of our test report, there is still a little room for extra features: A special tinnitus program can be programmed into the Allure 440 RIC upon request. This allows for the generation of stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly severe. We find this very useful and gladly award extra points.

Widex keeps up with the times and provides a forward-looking feature with the remote fitting service. Working individuals with little time can contact their audiologist online and have their hearing aids reprogrammed. Hearing aid users who have a longer journey to the specialty store also benefit from this special service.

Many hearing aids still come with a few health functions today. However, since the Allure 440 RIC does not have any special sensors for this, we cannot present any particular features here. It would have been nice to have some lifestyle functions, but these are not available in the Allure 440 RIC. Other hearing aids can score points with speech translation or fall alarms, but here it remains within the usual scope of functions.
