We tested a very compact hearing aid from a solid mid-price range this time. It is the Widex Magnify 100 mRIC R D. It is worn behind the ear and is designed for almost every hearing need. The cleverly designed placement of the speaker in the ear canal allows the device to deliver a beautiful, clear sound.
Hearing comfort
First, we looked at the comfort features. The better these are, the easier and more pleasant the listening experience becomes. In this hearing aid, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. Traditional noise suppression ensures that uniform, unimportant sounds are slightly reduced. With the Magnify 100 mRIC R D, we're not exactly pampered, but we can live well with basic noise suppression. However, users of the Magnify 100 mRIC R D will have to contend with wind sweeping over the microphones. There is no wind noise reduction here.
A pulse sound suppressor is unfortunately not included in the Magnify 100 mRIC R D. We cannot produce true 3D surround sound with the current test device. Especially outdoors, one should frequently look around to see where individual sound sources are located. However, focusing on a specific speaker works quite well thanks to the integrated directional microphones. The adjustment options in the equalizer are rather coarse. The frequency response is divided into 6 segments. Within these individual areas, no further changes can be made. This could lead to some sound weaknesses in the Magnify 100 mRIC R D, and the separation of speech and background noise does not succeed as we would ideally wish.
Strategies based on artificial intelligence are not yet implemented in this hearing aid from Widex.

Operation & connectivity
The operation options for hearing aids today are as simple or as complex as one would like. The basic functions are, of course, fully automatic. We wanted to know how users can additionally access the Magnify 100 mRIC R D. The simplest operation option is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This one has that too. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for stepwise adjustment of the volume. Or do you need different special programs for your professional daily life or your hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. If you want to keep everything in automatic mode, you can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. A discreet way to adjust the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you're talking to is too quiet again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.
Voice commands are a fairly new way to operate hearing aids. However, we do not have this option in this model yet. That is not a big deal – as long as you can hear well. Tap Control would have also been an interesting feature. With that, you could change the function with a quick tap on the ear. But this is not available in the Magnify 100 mRIC R D yet.
As is common today, we also find a smartphone app for the Magnify 100 mRIC R D. This app contains solid basic functions and adds a few goodies on top. We really enjoyed the direct, wireless streaming. This means that calls from the smartphone are transmitted to the hearing aids without any additional accessories. This transforms the hearing aid into a perfect hands-free device or a wireless headphone. Listening to music or watching and hearing videos is also incredibly comfortable.

An important factor for the acceptance of a hearing aid is its practicality in everyday life. This includes, for example, automated functions as well as robustness and user-friendliness. Unfortunately, the Magnify 100 mRIC R D cannot offer automatic situation recognition; we need to make manual adjustments to hear well in different acoustic situations. The integrated acclimatization manager can be of great help when starting in the world of hearing aids. Its job is to gradually increase the hearing aid's volume in tiny steps until the target volume is reached. This way, you can relax and gradually get used to the new sounds. A great relief in daily life is the integrated battery. With this, my Magnify 100 mRIC R D always has enough energy for the entire day, and I no longer have to worry that the batteries will suddenly run out in the middle of an event. Even with limited dexterity, a battery system is very helpful as it eliminates the need for inserting small button cells.
Let’s also take a look at the robustness of the casing and discover the protection class IP 68 in the data sheet. This means that dust cannot penetrate at all, and water only becomes dangerous after prolonged submersion. Protection against contact is also included.

Lastly, we are interested in whether there are a few extra goodies: A special tinnitus program can be programmed into the Magnify 100 mRIC R D upon request. This allows stimulating, pleasant sounds to be generated that distract from tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and are happy to award extra points.
A clever tool is the integrated remote maintenance service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a precious commodity. Therefore, such a remote maintenance service is absolutely appropriate. If someone needs a new programming for their hearing aids, they can easily contact the audiologist through the app and describe their hearing preferences. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send a customized setting as a data package to the app. From there, it is loaded onto the hearing aid and can be tested immediately. This definitely deserves extra points in our test.
A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors that can track some personal health data, for example. However, the Magnify 100 mRIC R D does not offer this. This Widex hearing aid does not have any additional lifestyle options onboard. Elsewhere, there are voice assistants or reminder functions, but you don't need that for good hearing. It would just have made the product a bit cooler.
