Today we have a traditional hearing aid called BM7 3 BTE on our test agenda. The manufacturer Audio Service designed it for moderate, severe, and fluctuating hearing losses and for behind-the-ear wearing. In terms of price, it is a model from the entry-level class. So, let’s take a look:
Hearing comfort
A good speech understanding is a given in contemporary hearing aids. At least as important is the listening comfort. Only when the ratio of speech transmission to the level of background noise is right, is hearing perceived as pleasant. Therefore, let's take a look at the comfort features: In the BM7 3 BTE, we find only the bare essentials when it comes to hearing comfort. Normal background noises such as traffic noise, the sound of a vacuum cleaner, or that from a fan should be muted by classic noise suppression. In this Audio Service hearing aid, this only works to a limited extent. There is nothing more than a very basic noise suppression here.
Unfortunately, we did not find a noise filter that responds to short, loud sounds. Users of the BM7 3 BTE, however, have to cope with the wind sweeping over the microphones. There is no wind noise suppression here. Spatial hearing would be another important point, but not much can be said about that in this Audio Service hearing aid. There are no special features that can somehow support or simulate spatial hearing. This should be especially considered if one is often outdoors in public spaces. We find the low number of frequency channels not so optimal. The device has only 6, which leaves little room for adjustment during initial programming and for long-term tuning, and one must probably also accept sound compromises.
Other hearing aids already use artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but this strategy has not yet been implemented in the BM7 3 BTE.

Operation & connectivity
Although hearing aids are now very intelligent, they still cannot read the thoughts of the hearing aid wearer. Thus, the automation sometimes reaches its limits. Individual adjustment options can be really useful, so let's briefly look at the options on the BM7 3 HdO: For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume up or down, there is a button on the device. You can also select further programs for special listening situations through it. A remote control is available for the BM7 3 HdO. It is quite practical, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume up-down option as well as various hearing programs.
For some time now, there has been a trend to adjust hearing aids using voice commands. The idea is really good, but Audio Service is not quite there with this device yet. Don't worry, this feature would be nice, but it's not essential. Controlling the hearing aids with a simple tap is not available in this Audio Service model, as it would have required specific sensors in the housing.
A suitable app will also be made available to us. In everyday life, the app should suffice, but it does not offer much more than a volume function and access to various hearing programs. A wireless connection to a smartphone or laptop is not possible, as the necessary hardware components are lacking. One should think carefully about whether they can do without this feature, but why not give it a try.

In the next step, we want to address the topic of user-friendliness. Is the BM7 3 HdO easy to handle? Is it weatherproof? Do you need to do a lot to get by? Here are our answers: We receive relatively little support from the program automation in the BM7 3 HdO. Without a few individual hearing programs, you will probably struggle to get by in a lively everyday life. Very important to us in terms of simplicity is the support during the acclimatization process. Especially after having heard poorly for years, it can sometimes be difficult to perceive everything at a natural volume. In our test device, there is an acclimatization manager that helps us through the adjustment phase with very small volume adjustments. After a few weeks or months, we then reach the calculated amplification level.
Zinc-air batteries provide power to the BM7 3 HdO. Changing the battery may become quite cumbersome for people with limited dexterity or vision. If you have concerns about this, you might want to consider a rechargeable model.
We had a carefree everyday life in our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took out the hearing aids with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to bubbly bathwater or saltwater.

At the end of our test report, there is still a bit of space for the extra features: We would have liked to discover a tinnitus program at this point, but unfortunately, there isn't one. Audio Service keeps up with the times and offers a future-oriented feature with the remote adjustment service. Working people with little time can contact their audiologist online and have their hearing aids reprogrammed. Hearing aid users who have a longer journey to the specialty store also benefit from this special service. Some hearing aids can track specific health data. However, this requires special sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately do not have in the BM7 3 HdO. The hearing aid also lacks additional functions such as special assistance systems, a fall alarm, or language translators. This is not particularly problematic, as it has no impact on the important hearing functions.

In the overall view, this device ranks in the lower positions and provides us with hardly more than a solid basic equipment. Of course, one can understand speech with the device, just like with all hearing aids, but not much is done to alleviate hearing effort. Our overall rating: 4.66.
